Oak Hills Golf Club
About
Oak Hills Golf Club sits near the state capital but it doesn't feel like it's located in a city. It has a peaceful and picturesque setting. The golf course rolls across gentle hills studded with oaks, pines, and beautiful dogwoods. Some of the greens are rather undulating and a few are elevated as well. Most holes are framed by trees or water. There are some challenging holes but the layout doesn't present anything too intimidating for beginners. The golf course finishes with one of its most memorable holes. From the elevated tee on this par 5, golfers will get a panoramic view of nine different holes.

Our favorite Columbia SC Course
Oak Hills is a wonderful place to play if you are in Columbia SC. it’s a good value for the money and the layout is very nice for all levels of golfers.
Good Shape
Have played this course many times. Greens were punched a couple of weeks ago it seemed and were slower than normal. Fairways in good shape. Good course . Was very crowded today and we had several slow foursomes in front of us . Had to wait on almost every hole. Not normally that slow. Great course for the price.
Back Nine Greens were terrible
The front nine was in great condition. The back nine greens were dirt in most places. Couldn't putt a straight line. Disappointing.
Course
I found the course to be in good shape except for the greens... Some of then were in good shape, some were OK in places, and some were just bad... This is not the only course in the area that has had issues with their greens this year... A tough winter, a spring that had temperatures well below average and an early heat wave this summer has created some harsh conditions for some of the courses in the area, but I'm confident the staff at Oak Hills will get the issue resolved.
Lost their greens
No warning that they lost almost all of their greens on the back. Putting on dirt on most of them. No chance of making a putt. 30.00 was robbery since they are so bad.
Greens hard as cement
Tee Boxes and Fairways were beautiful. Rough off fairway also in great shape. Greens were very frustrating. They were like putting on cement, unable to lag any putts as ball just kept rolling. Chipping onto green also frustrating since ball just kept rolling. Many dead spots causing ball to bounce when rolling. Pace of play somewhat slow as foursome took 5 hours and 15 minutes. Luckily this was a hot deal with 25% discount. I would be very disappointed paying full price with these green conditions.
Awesome yrdage
Course was great, greens were in what I think bad condition, either over feeding them or weather related. But they need work.I enjoyed playing there and would go back.
Needs improvement
I will start off with the good aspects of the course. Great greens. Challenging. Great fairways.
Now the bad. Friendliness level in club house was around a 1 (with 10 being the highest). No carts were available. ZERO organization. It almost seemed the goal was to see how many tee times could be filled and paid for with no thought of how we were actually gonna PLAY. 90 degree day and water coolers on course were empty. No cart girl. Never saw a single bathroom on the course...except club house. And apparemtly its acceptable to have 5 people riding on cart...4 crammed in seat and one hanging on the back
Very fair and good shape following a bad winter
I am just visiting the area and have found that almost all of the course in the Columbia area have suffered winter kill and black algae. The greenkeeper's I have talked to have all talked about this being the worst winetr conditions in the last ten years. However, when I played Oak Hills, I was delighted to find that their conditions were much better than others in the area. There was a small amount of winter kill on the greens, but for the most part they were completely recovered. Congratulations to the grounds crew. The pace of play was a little slow but I can understand as it is one of the few in the area in good condition and it was a Saturday. The rough a little spotty, clay and rocks many times. However, the bermuda fairways were generous and in very good condition, you should not have to spend much time in the rough. There were enough hazards to require shotmaking and some very pleasant scenery. Certainly a course you should play if you are in the area. The only concern you might have is age and walking ability.
The only negative, I am 65 and even though the course played very fair from the men's tees there is a considerable amount of walking to tee boxes from the cart paths, even for the senior tees. Additionally, there are several places where you have a good walk to slightly elevated greens. Don't be afraid to ask for a Handicap plate if you need it. The course is worth the effort and the staff was extremely friendly and professional.
Good Experience
Oak Hills is always a pleasure for me. Greens are improving after being punched and sanded. It’s a good course for the hot deal price we paid. Interesting holes and layout.
Challenging Course, Good Condition
Challenging course, elevated greens. Greens, tee boxes and fairways are in very good condition compared to other courses in the area. Winter kill (2017/2018) did a lot of damage, especially to greens, on many other courses in the SC midlands. Have also taken several lessons from Head Pro Young Lim who is an excellent instructor!!
The best of five
I'M visiting the area to escape the winter that won't end up north. This was the fifth course I played in the area and can say without a doubt if I played Oak Hills first I wouldn't have played the others. The course was by far in the best condition. There was actually grass on the greens, which we're in early season condition but By Far the best I played. The layout was interesting and challenging. If I lived in the area this would be my home course.
So so
The layout is nice and I’m going to give the course conditions a break because of the uneven winter that we’ve had here in the area.
However I will say that the golf carts need seatbelts in them. The cart paths are something to be desired.
nice course, friendly staff
fun and challenging course. played with the assistant pro and he help us a lot on ball placement. only knock is the cart paths can be a white knuckle ride
Everything was great, greens were bumping and not grown in, which is expected this time of year. Would go back and play again.
Good course with some challenging holes.
This was a good layout with some decent elevation changes offering shots up and down hills.
It is a decent layout and offer different tees for levels of the golfers.
The condition of the greens were fair and the fairways were dormant. The conditions around the edges of the course and teeing areas were a bit ragged.
All in all a good deal on the price and a good course to try out.
Best Course in the Columbia Area for the value!
The course is great and keeps things challenging with ungulated terrain. It’s always in good condition and plays true. I’m a zero handicap and have graviatated towards only playing courses with plush grass and smooth greens. This is one of them.
