Reviews
Like hometown golf
Putting a lot into this facility course in good shape, clubhouse is great ,new carts and a friendly staff a great day of golf!
Xmas vacation play
Weather was good for time of year and hardly anyone on course so no issues with pace of play. Course is deceptive with all the water hazards but few actually come into play. Nice staff but they could use some amenities even though it's winter
Getting Better Every Time
Nice layout, with improving conditions, makes this one of our favorite courses to play in the Carolinas every winter. Greens were in the best shape ever, with only a couple having a few clumps of unwanted fairway bermuda.
Quiet and peaceful
Very peaceful and quiet neighbourhood we really enjoyed. Pace of play was very relaxed. People let us play through as the course was not crowded at all. There are a few challenging holes with fairly long shots over water, but fairways are generally wide and the rough is trimmed pretty short. A few spots on some fairways were squishy, not well drained. The greens had just been top dressed, but, hey, it's got to be done sometime. We'd play there again.
Brierwood
This course was not bad, nor was it great. The greens were painted and slick from the paint, not because of the care of the grass. The bunkers had little to no sand, the fairways were so-so and the tee boxes are not level. They could take better care of the course appearance, but I am not sure if they were in a transition phase or not. A good tract to practice shots on, but not one to call your home course.
Nice course unfortunately has fallen on hard times
Great staff, friendly, attentive and genuinely appreciative of your patronage. Pace of play is great due to low volume. Course conditions are rough. The economic downturn took its toll on this layout. Some holes in better condition than others. I was surprised that most bunkers were in decent shape, raked and manicured with enough sand. Layout is perfect for high handicappers, beginners, and short hitters. Wide fairways and hazards are fair and manageable. Only 4 or 5 forced carries on entire course. My wife is a beginner and said it was perfect for her game (shot ability plus the pace of play didn't make her feel rushed). She wants to go back to work on her game.
Good Course
First off... I booked this on Golfnow for $10.00.... so, I had mediocre expectations... I was pleasantly surprised by the layout and shape of the course. Most fairways and greens were in good shape.
There was one fairway that was terrible, but playable. The cart paths were not in the best shape...but who cares, they got me from hole to hole. It was a good challenge for shot placement, not super long. The scenery was nice! I would play it again.
Briarwood
Greens were not good and some fairways rough. However I expected that for the cheap price.
Spectacular View
Although I am a member at a nearby club, I try to play here a few times each year. My recent round was part of an interclub match.
Great layout! Very fair! Playable...there is a suitable tee for everyone.
I love the golf course! The only change I would make is to lower the railings on the front porch of the clubhouse so I could sit in one of the rockers and enjoy the view a little easier. The view is spectacular!
I have met some great guys playing there over the years! Next to our course, Carolina National, it is my favorite in the area.
Open course wide fairways good bunkera
Nice course first time played nice bunkers greens spotty but rolled true
Will be playing somewhere else
Played here very often January to March. Didn't get crowded because the course was in poor condition. This course does not have good drainage. It was almost always cart path only. Since I got a good deal through golf now I played here often despite the mud etc. When they told me I would now have to pay as much for my non golfer wife to ride along--they just lost all my business-(not just my greens fee but also their pricey snacks I would purchase). I can play better courses for less since they don't charge for a non golfer.
Fun course now dead.
Played here last year and it was just OK. Nothing has been done to it. Not very good at all.
Started off with the bag guy screwing up the start. Then the first green was mostly all sand and bumpy. Most of the greens were the same . Never saw a worker on the whole course. Cart paths were pretty rough. Fast play because of few people on the course. I guess everyone knows how it has gone down hill.
Used to like the course. Unfortunately, we will never go back. Not worth the money or the time. Drove 30 miles for nothing.
Marshy course
The course was extremely wet. Cart path only. Not only wet but the ball would sink in the mud as well as our feet did. Difficult to walk it was so wet. The greens were sandy.
Perhaps close the course when it is so wet. It is a somewhat beautiful course, but not playable at this time.
First and last
This is the worst course I ever played l would not play it for free there was no grass growing any where
Good value and no crowds
Although some of the fairways are still pretty wet, it was a pleasure to play the course. The greens were recently top dressed, but very playable. A few of the teeing areas need work. Overall the course is in much better condition than it was a year ago. Pace of play was outstanding (2 1/2 hrs walking).
Laura's Review of Briarwood
Greens are in great shape. What an improvement since new management took over. Course well groomed and not overcrowded. Bunkers are in terrific shape also. Nice clubhouse and lounge. Highly recommend!
Good layout; very wet conditions
I would like to play this course sometime when it was fairly dry. There had been quite a bit of rain lately and many of the holes were rather mushy. It was carts path only which I don't mind but there was so much casual water in the fairways, it was tough to find a suitable place to place your ball. I should have used "lift, clean and place" but I played it down. That was my mistake. I enjoyed the layout and would enjoy trying it again when it is drier.
Wow
Amazing how vast improvement to a course that was not bad before Kevin has done a great job with club house and course And more improvements in the works food was great and price for everything was fantastic m
Return to Brierwood after a long hiatuis
Arrived to play at 3 PM at a GREAT rate but needed help regarding overall booking. Beth quickly provided a rain check for pre-paid player that had come down ill. (BIG KUDOS...was really happy to see customer service not just "Sorry...too bad" that has happened before to me) I'll definitely return to use and will bring friends!
Jumped into cart and started my round and was immediately pleased by the overall condition of the course. While some tee boxes need a bit of work, this is where you TEE the ball up so didn't faze me much. Had played the day before at a different local course that had substantially WORSE conditions (tee boxes, fairways & greens).
While the course is not the most difficult to play, it does provide the average golfer the ability to PLAY, not worry about "what's over the next knoll that I didn't realize would kill my score" you get sometimes at a course you've never played.
Endured a couple of heavy showers the front nine but still played side in just under 1.25 hrs. Course layout made nice loop back through development with homes set back away from the fairways, not crowding right up into line of play like other courses I've played in the area.
Back nine is a bit more scenic, with some nice water views on a number of holes. Finished round in just under 2:45 hrs.
After round, went to renovated clubhouse area where I had a couple brews with some patrons who have been coming to Brierwood for a number of years. Since it was mid-week, grill had closed by time I got in but no big deal. They explained how the course had recently been bought by investors who had done a lot to bring the facility back to "life". Enjoyed getting a bigger picture view from a locals perspective.
Will gladly come back to play this course again. Would be a perfect place to bring a newer player or significant other who'd just like to play some golf without a lot of drama.
Hope to see Beth and her staff again soon!
Best Shape
We play this course every year because it's close to where we stay on Holden Beach. The course was in the best shape I've seen it in years. New owners have really put some work in. Greens were fast and true. Fairways were lush and very playable. Bunkers were a little thin, but still playable. Some tee boxes need work, which staff said was next on the renovation list.
