Golf Advisor: Top 25 Most Improved U.S. Golf Courses (2015 #4)
Reviews
Decent course. Great amenities.
I played this course when it was very wet. It was difficult to get the greens right but overall the course was pleasant and cart paths were generally OK. Golf carts were top of the line.
condition of course
nice layout but needs work on path and fairways greens are being worked on
Nice, natural course
FINALLY a course that does "dye" their greens - green. I like the fact that golf courses go through seasons themselves. Nice greens very fair course if you play the shots that you ought to, IOW play smart and you can play this course well.
Surprisingly Wet Conditions
Having played here last winter, I was looking forward to the new owner/management's progress in improving the course and facilities. The clubhouse improvements which appear to be in the final stages of completion, are very well done, especially the large deck overlooking the lake, which I'm sure will be a popular spot for those 19th hole tales of missed birdies.
Hopefully they will put in the same amount of work to the course. The bunkers were well edged and raked with a proper amount of sand in them. The course itself was as wet as I have ever seen it. The fairways though it was hard to see, were saturated when walked or driven on. Hopefully when it dries out, they will be able to aerate the fairways so that any water may drain further into the subsoil, creating much a more desirable turf and playing conditions. Some tee boxes had some weed problems, but should be easily controlled once the growing season begins. I saw only one green with some undesirable bermuda growth in it, and it too can be easily controlled. A spring aerification and overseeding on the greens should have them in good shape for the 2015 season. The layout is one that I like, not overly long. The ability to move the ball in both directions will definitely help you to score on this course. Again hopefully they will put in the money and work on the course, that they have put into the clubhouse. A good course superintendent with a willing crew and proper funding can have this course in above average playability in one growing season.
Will Not Recommed
This was the first and last time I have played here. I was not really sure what to expect based on the reviews that I read. I figured based on the price to play, it would have been a decent course even for this time of year. However I was wrong, it was difficult on most fairways to tell them from the rough. Most of them had weeds growing throughout the course and several of the tee boxes had little grass on them. The only good thing that I can say about this course is that the greens were in decent shape and difficult to read. The only other thing was the sand bunkers, they were in good shape, believe me, I played in a lot of them. The course is supposed to be making improvments, but the only place I could see where they were doing anything was in the club house. They should have at least used that money and bought chemicals to use on fairways and tee boxes. They should also reduce their fee's during their so called improvment project. Just glad it was a very nice day to be out on any course.
Horrible Course
Conditions are very bad, pace of play was 6 hours for 18 holes, staff/owner not customer oriented.
Lots of potential
A note inside the golf cart mentioned that the course was "under new management" and apologized for the overall course conditions with the promise that many improvements were on the way. For my money, overall I felt the course was in pretty decent shape except for the greens which were bumpy and in relatively poor shape. I liked the layout and would probably come back to play it again at a later date.
New management: improvements underway
I read the reviews and knew the course wasn't perfect, but remembered it as a nice little challenge. It didn't disappoint. It's obvious that new management is working hard to improve course as well as club house conditions. She should be in nice shape for spring/summer '15. We'll be back.
Disappointing
Rarely and I disappointed with a golf I have booked on GolfNow. This was an exception. The fairways and tee boxes wee in aweful condition and looked like they hadn't been mowed in days, if not weeks. It was hard to find a good lie in most fairways. The greens were in fair shape but had not been mowed and were extremely slow.
I would not play this course again.
A leisurely day of golf.
Two of us played this course for the first time on a Monday. It was an overcast day with light rain for 3 holes. Clubhouse was being renovated which was good. New owners were very nice and dedicated to restoring the club house and restaurant.
They explained the course is in process of being brought back to better condition. Greens were generally smaller and in good shape. It looked like they had been punched 2-3 weeks earlier. Fairways were somewhat hard to distinguish from the rough as many had some deep grass and many weeds. It rained that prior weekend a great deal, so there were also many wet areas
Bathrooms on the course were great; freshly painted and clean. Carts were fine with the rain covers on the back.
Would return in a future to see improvements.
Renewal on the Way
My son and I returned to Brierwood after about 6 years and were glad to see that it was under new management. We would have known that when we reached the first green, for it was better than any we remembered from our previous visit. Spoke to a young man in the clubhouse who seemed genuinely excited about both the planned improvements to the course and the changes being made to the clubhouse and restaurant. Can't wait to return next year while here on vacation and see the revitalized Brierwood . . . it will no longer be the best kept secret, but a great little course to play. I just hope they keep the greens fees reasonable! If you're looking for a super challenge, there are plenty of courses available for you, but if you'd like a pleasant round of golf for the average golfer, this is the course for you.
Bad condition
Terrible condition. Under new management. May be better in 2015
New Ownership
Played off and on in the rain. Course was soaked after three days of rain. Knew fairways would be soft and wet, and they were. Needed to have some time with grandsons playing - Great day for that as no others on course, just us. Remodeling of clubhouse ein progress and course being worked on. Give it 9-12 months and next year this time will be a really good facility. Price was unbelievably low and I doubt could be matched anywhere else! Thankxxxxx
Nice people, bad conditions.
The staff members were very friendly, but the course was in very rough shape. The tee boxes and fairways were full of weeds. The little remaining sand in most bunkers were glazed over. And the greens are just bad. Could be a nice facility if things were overhauled.
If you are desperate play here
Poor course conditions, pace of play was super slow, left the course after 14 holes.
Course was very nice
Course personnel were very friendly and knowledgable
budget friendly
I don't get to play much right now so I wasn't looking to spend alot for a round. I've played nicer courses but there was no waiting and the staff was very friendly...
