Good Nine Hole Course
Overall course was in very good condition. Challenging course with hills and water on play several holes. Great course to walk. Friendly staff and great value for the money.
This course has great features.
Great greens and tee box. only complaint is fairway needs to be mowed lower or more often. Grass was a little higher than most courses.
Truly A Goat Track/R Neck City
Myself and a couple of buddies were on a golf trip and on the way home we decided to take a detour to this little course. We arrived mid morning and we had to wait for about a half hour before someone returned to the shop . There was a sign on the door saying the guy was out on the course. When he finally returned 45 minute later . Shop was dirty and smelly,ROY was in shorts and a t shirt, We went in, checked in a and needed a few things. Poor selection . So we asked about a practice facility, only a little putting green surrounded by weedy grass for chipping and an overgrown green surface for putting. Should have known at that point. Out on the course conditions and care of the course worsened. Literally every teeing area was overgrown with very little grass or none at all. Fairways were no different. centipede cow pasture grass , thinned out and weedy. Tall weeds growing in a couple of the fairways. one was over 2 feet tall.Literally in the middle of the fairway! All but one of the greens had been mowed to short, scalped, with burn lines and mower lines.
By the third hole all we could do was laugh. Then it did get more interesting , a group of locals caught up wearing jean shorts and t shirts. They had been drinking heavily. They invited us to join them. We said should be good for a few laughs! As it turned out we were right. We have never met a more local colorful group of people ,One guy changed balls and or moved his ball at least a club length on every shot in the fairway. I inquired about this and he said it was a local rule , everyone does it here at dogwood hills, next came a new lesson in etiquette, At this course it is OK to walk on someones putting line, burp , break wind , walk around , talk, make gestures all the while someone is lining up and putting. Oh and it's OK to drive literally up to the green in your cart. Almost on the green.
Next came the gossip. Oh what fun, evidently the course is owned by the county. Well , because none of the locals had a say in who works here it is rumored that no one is happy because Joe bobs brother got the job. Or that all the employees get to play for free and all others have to pay. Or that the employees can bring a guest for free but if your not their relative you don't stand a chance.
Next came the information about a fight during the Thursday night blitz. They have a blind draw for teams and supposedly the blind draw is not so "blind" as the same teams always win and a lot of gossip and people are very upset. Well it came to pass a few weeks ago that two sets of three were put together and they were none too happy about playing next to each other. Supposedly a guy named "Rickey Bobby" yes we have confirmation that this is his legal name, He and others were drinking heavily and called the opposing team member ( a black fellow) the N word several times during the round because of supposedly cheating during the round. ( but wait, i thought is was OK to cheat at dogwood hills because of local rules ,, LOL! ) So a fight ensued in the parking lot after the winners were announced. Several people were involved including staff. Oh boy , what's next. Well because it's a local crowd and there were relatives of the sheriff there no police were called in and the locals boys "took care of the "situation" ..
Now what's most concerning to me as a member of the public is that this is a county owned public facility. Is it a safe place to enjoy a round of golf. We were a few times concerned for our personal safety , because the group with us, the locals, were clearly over served alcohol and driving the carts erratically, swearing and in general acting in a questionable way, and What kind of Government Organization allows this sort of thing to continue, because according to our new friends, this is very common place, They all had a good laugh about it with us.
If you want the whole country boy / goat track experience at least once in your golfing career You must go here. But beware, you are in for it. Have thick skin, try to laugh , expect the worst course conditions you will ever experience and make sure to have 911 on the speed dial because you will run into some unsavory characters who at the drop of the hat will want to take you behind the wood shed if you offend them in any way. ( but wait, make sure the 911 goes to YOUR local police , not the cousin county facility, because , remember about the Thursday night thing. )
Hope you enjoyed the review and best of luck to you and your game.
Challenging 9 Hole Course
I’ve read the reviews about this course, but really doubted that a nine hole golf course could be challenging and eventful. Man was I ever wrong! One must play the course twice just to attempt to gain back the beating received on the first time around! This was mine first time playing the course and it will not be my last. Plays narrow, blind at times, and unforgiving in the rough. The fairways needed work and at the time cutting. I played a day after the 4th of July where each flag stick had a flag attached. To ensure the flags never touched the ground, there were flag stick holders on each hole allowing the Flag to maintain it’s honor. Impressive! Play the course and you will enjoy it. Hints: number 2 plain tough, play it simple; and number 7 and 9 looks easy but looks are very deceiving...enjoy.
Customers are walking away
We Pay taxes on this golf course in Colleton County. They are talking about increasing their prices. I guess to pay for all the new equipment they are getting. Three of the nine holes are usually a muddy mess. I’m disappointed in the way I have been treated and talked to by the guy running the place. He made it clear that he does not like the Golfnow app and that he wants out of the contract. I’ve done a lot of promoting this golf course to a lot of people who stopped playing in there and I personally got them to go back and start playing at Walterboro. Because I want to see the golf course succeed. But when the people in charge are becoming greedy, well over time it is going to fizzle out. Because people are not gonna be treated mean and keep putting money here in Walterboro.
Greens looking good
A Great course nine holes . Some of it is narrow so you can really work on your game some of the holes are wide open. The greens are looking really good. Roy and all the crew is doing an awesome job.
Challenging and fun Course
Great day with beatiful layout - hills and water hazard make for challenging play . Will play again and again!
Don't waste your time or money!
This course was, by far, the worst golf course we have ever played. My first clue should have been how cheap it was for 18 holes and a cart. My second clue might have been how filthy the white door was going into the Pro Shop (and I use that term lightly). But when the first hole was a severe dog-leg right (one of 3) and the ground was either weeds or mushy weeds (extremely hard to even tell where the fairway was), it didn't take us long to figure out that we wouldn't be playing our second round on the 9-hole course. Between the 2 of us, we lost 9 balls without even being in the woods. Most of the tee boxes were slanted and some were even void of grass (as in, hitting off of dirt). Don't waste your time or money. There are lots of other courses out there!
Looking the best this season
Looking the best, I played one of my best games today
Getting better and better by Pastor Steven
Getting better and better, Roy and the crew are working hard. It looks the best I have seen in a year
Nice course and great value
My wife and I drove over from Charleston for a 9:30 tee time and we were able to get right out. This is a 9 hole course x2 for the round. Not a particularly long course but a number of strategically placed dog legs requiring a fade or draw for short iron approaches. Shots from a fairly deep 2nd cut will challenge. Pretty hilly for the low country so it will require adjusting club selection from the fairways. The fairways were pretty good considering the amount of rain we have had over the last 6 weeks. Greens were able to hold balls, rolled true and in average+ condition for a semiprivate course but I felt they were a little on the slow side. My only complaint, this being a 9 hole course when we made the turn things started to back up and we observe several groups jumping ahead which managed to slow pace of play even more. That said I believe this probably doesn’t happen on weekdays. I certainly intend to play here again during the week. I could not get my garmin to lock in although it recognized the course so a rangefinder will really help you dial in on the pin.
Fun course
Course getting better by the day! Greens best I’ve seen them!
Looking better every week
Roy and crew there are really working hard to make Dogwood Hills a great course. It is worth the drive to Walterboro.
Looking better every week
Roy and the crew there are working hard to make this course better. The greens are really coming around, there are still a couple of greens that need to be patched. But most of them are looking better. Great Job Roy.
Looking Great!
Roy is doing a great job on the course. Walterboro is looking great.
Drying out and looking very good.
Greens looks better than I have seen them in a year.
Raising the Bar
They are putting a lot of work into the course. I hope more people will come and play golf here in our town.
Handy-cap coming on down!
They are working very hard to make this course great. They more golfers to keep the $$ here in Walterboro. If a golfer can master this course they can play any course.
Great deal good course
Nice 9 hole course. Some challenging holes. Well maintained.
BS! This course is a goat track. You must be one of the local rednecks we encountered when we played a few weeks ago. You were wearing shorts and a t shirt and were obviously intoxicated by the way you behaved while coming up on us from behind. Being rude, loudmouthed and in general poor etiquette., We also heard there was a fight in the parking lot a few Thursdays ago. Nice place right?
