Greyston GC - 12th Cart Path looking back towards the clubhouse Photo submitted by blazerboyjon on 02/13/2013
Disappointing from the moment I arrived. I thought I was receiving a prepaid range balls with the GolfNow purchase but that wasn’t the case. Everyone receives range balsa on the extremely divoted range. The practice green had no flags in the holes & I noticed the green wasn’t in the best shape. After playing a few holes, the rough greens were noted as trend with a couple of them really needing areas to be deemed ground under repair. Additionally, the men’s restroom was pretty nasty. Very disappointed to pay a premium price for a less than municipal course & clubhouse conditions. I heard they lost the greens in July, but never made an attempt to lay sod or aggressively attempt to get on top of the conditions. Highly disappointed.
Cooked Greens
When I arrived at the course there was no mention on the condition of the greens. The greens were damaged to the point of being almost un-puttable. We played with a regular who stated that a “mistake” was made by the greenkeeping staff that ended up killing the greens. That was not communicated during booking or check in. I will say tee to green the course was in great shape. Two putt max is how we played. Give a discount until your greens are healthy…!
Used to be one of the best public courses within an hour of Nashville, but the pace of play has been horrendous. I have played here twice now, and I did not tee off until 25+ minutes after my scheduled tee time both times. The first time I played, the conditions were pretty good, but they have clearly fallen off as the summer has gone on. I get the summer has been hot and dry, but there's no excuse when any of the Nashville munis have better kept greens by a mile. Majority of the greens were un-puttable due to the dirt patches and overall condition of them. Save your money and play elsewhere. Wouldn't have paid $40 to play here given the 5+ hour pace of play and condition of the greens.
Misleading and disappointing!
I have played Greystone many times over the years, usually in the winter when the grass is dormant. Haven’t played it in a few years, so when I traveled to Nashville for Labor Day weekend, I booked my tee time. There was a notice explaining “3” greens distressed from excessive heat. Looking back, there were probably only 3 full greens playable. If I had known almost all the greens were unputtable, I would not have booked the round. Greystone may not have been able to combat what happened, but being transparent and truthful would have been best. They are called “Greens Fees” for a reason.
Greens
This course is typically one of my favorites in Tennessee. Staff is friendly and the layout is 10/10, but the greens were in horrible shape. Still rolled okay but they desperately needed more rain.
Worst greens I've ever played
For 90 dollars, the green shape was atrocoius.. The pro noted that they had severely declined in recent weeks with the heat index being brutal.. With that said, basic expectation of price reduction.. Paying 90 for a 2:24 tee time and those greens was not acceptable.
Greens
Greens are in rough shape especially for how expensive it is.
Solid but greens were not playable.
I really like this course and will travel for it when it’s on good condition. Fairways and tee boxes always are solid. But the greens yesterday were unplayable. Really unfortunate and they should’ve let me know when I signed up. This is a $85-90 quality course, no doubt, when the greens are in shape. Yesterday I putted over and through patches of soot and dirt on every single green. Not one putt was true. Really terrible greens.
Weather is not good to the course
When Greystone is in good condition, it is a top notch course. Great layout, challenging holes, some easier ones.
Ended up only playing the front 9. Unfortunately, they must have lost the greens not too long ago. And most of the fairways are burned out. It makes for long drives cause of the roll out, but it also makes it unpredictable.
The greens have a lot of bare spots around the edges and are not rolling smoothly at the moment.
It would be nice of management to post the current condition or lack thereof on their website and GolfNow so that golfers don’t drive out over and hire, if they come from Nashville or further out, and are faced with a course they didn’t anticipate. I was made aware of the greens not being in top shape, but only because I was planning to play in a tournament this coming weekend and the tournament director send out a note of caution.
Unplayable
I love this course but it is unplayable right now. The greens are completely ruined for the rest of this year and maybe next. I can’t believe they are charging $80+ in this condition
They have lost their Greens
Normally Greystone is a fantastic golf course….i live in the Nashville area and play this course usually once a month. That being said the greens at Greystone are lost. They of course did not tell us this when we booked our tee time…..paid full price 60.00 that was with range balls and was very disappointed once we made it to the green on the 1st hole. I’m assuming the heat and lack of rain took its toll. That I can understand if they would’ve told me and probably still would’ve played just because of the history of this great course. As of now I would not play here and save the money…the greens have little grass on them and are nearly unplayable
Great Course, Terrible greens
This course could be amazing if the greens were actually okay. They are terrible, no actual grass on greens. Patchy, couldn’t really read or play the green in any way. Apart from that, staff was really nice and easy to deal with. Course has great potential to be a very fun place to play, however, conditions in general kind of destroy the experience.
Horrible
Course was horrible. Greens were the worst I've ever seen unless you put the ball 6" from the pin no way you're one putting. Don't waste your money. I will not pay to play there again
Disappointed in a course that used to be one of my favorite
The course layout is great however the condition of the course was terrible. The greens were horrendous, every green was mostly bare spots with a scattering of grass. The grounds keeper should be ashamed of the condition of the course.
Greens are gone. Fairways baked
Spoke with the superintendent. This poor guy is short/staffed, experienced abundance of rain in June during a tournament and lost more than half the greens. They are in very bad shape- no turf at all in some locations on many of the greens. Fairways are brown despite the rain in Middle Tennessee. Meanwhile, there are no indications of the course conditions given verbally or anywhere on the Greystone website. If you value your golf, do not play here until you call and get course update. The course should be closed until the greens are re-established. Poorly managed by the office.
Greens Sucked.
Dead greens and no monetary kick back because of it sucked.
Greens were almost unplayable especially for the time of year.
Great Layout, Horrible Greens
Layout was extremely fun. Some easy holes and some difficult ones. The greens are dead. They’ve definitely mismanaged them and are over 50% gone on most greens. I was excited to play here because of the reputation but unfortunately it’s just not worth it. $90 weekend rate for a course that has lost most of their greens just won’t cut it.
Not critical just tough love…
Before I offer my critique I want to say that I do this as a huge fan of this course asI’ve been playing and bragging on Greystone for 20 years. I have left a half a dozen four or five star reviews over the years, but I have never seen it or any course in the area is as poor of shape as it is now. After playing the course two weeks ago, and a dozen times earlier this year, I was considering rejoining the course again as it was in excellent shape, even though the thin grassed greens are marked up from plenty play as usual. How is it that public courses in Nashville such as McCabe and Percy Warner consistently have better greens then expensive private Greystone? Before you think well they’re different types of greens/grass…OK then GS to consider redoing the greens once and for all, because in its current condition it is not worth making the drive from Nashville to play it for free. If I was a member, I would have to suspend or cancel my membership until they improve the greens year-round.. You can’t blame the weather or anything else, when other courses in the area are not in unplayable conditions like Greystone is now.
Turrible Greens and Overcrowded
I’m convinced that every 4-5 star review is from an employee or relative. Someone a month ago said the greens roll pure. Impossible! The greens are trash and the fairways are barely above average. Great layout but don’t expect to be rewarded for a green in regulation…Lol.
