So underrated

This is one of those courses that causes me to really question lists of course rankings. When I walked off the 18th green I had to laugh at what I had discovered in the days leading up to this round. Top 100 public lists are hard to crack, and in my opinion once you get past the top 60, the bottom 40 are pretty interchangeable. Yet, for GreyStone not to show up in GD, GM or GW's "Best in State" rankings or "top places you can play in each state," lists, is a head-scratcher.

GreyStone is a formidable golf course and a lot of fun to play. The shot and scenic value for me at points on this course were off the charts. There is a balance between holes that ascend and descend steep elevation changes, and flatter holes that rest in a valley near a rock quarry.

There is no easing into the round here. In fact, it may be my favorite opening hole I've ever played. The tee shot is framed by hardwoods and your target is blind, resting over a large sloping edge of the fairway, which reminded me of a dragon's tail. The yawning fairway resembles a ski slope and drops dramatically to the green. The saddle-like effect also keeps balls funneling toward the middle of the fairway, but miss it off either edge and good luck saving par.

Zoysia fairways provide for excellent lies and were among the best fairways I've played in recent memory. Two-thirds of the course is pretty open, but there is some thick stuff if you get too off line that will swallow up balls.

The bentgrass greens were very good and deceptively quick past the hole.

I loved the closely-mown areas around the green that made chipping exact. The large scallop-shaped bunkers were very consistent.

The par 3s on the front were rather pedestrian, but the two on the back are stellar - as good as you'll find.

True to the namesake of the course, rock outcroppings are prevalent throughout. The stone walls on several holes, particularly No. 10, were beautiful. The intermittent outcropping on the par-5 12th added an awesome element to the hole. It was like playing through a mine field.

There are several short, straightforward par 4s scattered throughout, so take advantage of these to score well, then soak in the uniqueness of holes like Nos. 1, 5, 9, 10, 12 17 and 18. In fact, 16, 17, 18 provide a tremendous closing stretch.

This is a highly underrated track that you can get awesome hot deals thru Golfnow on. If in the Nashville area, it is a must-play.

Tip: in lieu of a traditional yardage guide, be sure and grab a yardage card from the pro shop. It is very helpful in seeing the layout of holes and does provide yardages to hazards, etc.

The magazines might not be able to get the raters out there. It's not really close to anything and Nashville isn't really a hotbed of courses for raters to see. Sweeten's Cove had to make a tremendous effort to get enough raters (and that with big backing from the GolfClubAtlas crowd). All lists have flaws...witness the Top 50 list on this very site not having any of the 4 Bandon Dunes courses listed (for the exact reason that not enough people who write reviews for this site have played there).

Not what it use to be.

For the price the greens and fringe are in horrible condition. First tee was backed up as usual so we started 20 min after our slot and it took us 6 hours to finish.

Not what it used to be...

I think we all need to stop referring to Greystone as "the best public course in Nashville" or "hidden gem!" - it USED to be. Greystone really was one of the best courses in all of Tennessee. Thats why it almost annually hosts some of the best tournaments in the state. But its old reputation is the only thing keeping it afloat these days. For about a year, maybe two, Greystone has ferociously fallen off. An invasive species of grass has taken over all of the greens. The greens are splotched with countless patches of different colored grasses, some of which grow faster than others, leaving the greens extremely bumpy. This same problem has bled onto the fringes which are all but dead now, leaving 2-3 inch sprouts of grass in tennis ball sized patches. You literally cant putt from the fringes, it's pinball now. Its just really sad to see because the design of the course and its elevations are so much fun, and it deserves to be back to where it was just a couple years ago, rightfully referred to as the best around. Theres only so long that players can keep living in the past saying it's a great course while they look at miserable green conditions. After a while of waiting for them to "come back" you start to realize they arent.

Terrible value

$80 was way too much for this course in winter conditions and with the greens recently aerated - which they didn’t tell us when booking or when checking in. The clubhouse is dated and seemed (and smelled dirty). Bathrooms were junky. Both need upgrades.

Way overpriced

We paid $80 for winter conditions and recently punched/aerated greens. No one told us about the punched greens prior to us playing. These were $50-60 course conditions at best. Was really disappointed in the condition of the greens. Clubhouse is run down and felt dirty. Nothing about the day made me want to go back.

Greystone - Nashville

For the money and the drive to get there from Nashville it wasn't worth it. I know early in the season but the driving range had old matts, balls were all dirty, nobody at bag drop when you got there, every green was in rough shape with putts bouncing around, around greens were brutal with patches of dirt, etc.

I played Gaylord and Hermitage for the same money and the courses were awesome in comparison.

This course needs a makeover.

Great course!

Greens are a little sandy and bumpy right now, but you can tell they were probably aerated in the last few weeks. The course will fill out late spring and I'm sure it'll be in great shape then.

Fairways are brown this time of year and have a great stand of turf. Although the course is located in Dickson, TN it's definitely worth the drive.

Time to refurbish the fairway bunkers

The gravel aggregate is surfacing in the fairway bunkers. It happens over time. Just one of those evil necessities of maintaining a great golf venue. The green side bunkers are great.

Poor greens - again.

The greens are the weakness of this course. They're probably the worst in the Nashville area. Until course management corrects this, Greystone will only be a fair tract at best. The root system is very shallow, which makes the greens very susceptible to lots of bad spots. Those who play Greystone don't repair their ball marks on the greens, which makes the greens even worse than they already are. I usually repair 5-10 per green when I play there.

Unacceptable

I know it’s February but man the course is in really bad condition. I can forgive that because of the weather we’ve had.. but for $70?!?! You really should have a discounted rate lower than that for the winter. The greens were absolutely terrible. Bumpy and slow.

There is no water on the course and no bev cart. Well, at least you finally have gps on the carts..

Avoid this place till spring! Not worth the money right now!

Good Track but Bathrooms?

Have played several time and love the course. However this time I took my wife and the course was pretty full with several other women playing that I noticed BUT not one bathroom available for ladies as all bathrooms were locked. Doesn’t make sense on a busy day. Ended up not being able to finish round as we lost our slot on the course because we had to drive all the way back to the clubhouse to use the facility. Unacceptable. Hopefully management corrects the concern.
Other than that a good course for good value.
