Shelby Golf Course
About
East Nashville's Shelby Golf Course is historic, opening way back in 1924, making it Nashville's first municipal golf course, and it's a beauty, offering 18 holes of golf over rolling hills on a good-looking landscape in the beautiful confines of Shelby Park. Bermuda Tif Dwarf greens became a part of the golf course in 2006, and golfers of all levels will be able to golf a round on this golf course, which has hosted the School Days Junior Golf Tournament, Tennessee's longest-running golf tournament.
The par-72 Shelby Golf Course measures 6,079 yards from the Blue tees, though ladies have the option of playing to 4,873 yards on the Red tees. A round of golf kicks off on a par-4 hole that comes in at 345 yards from the Blue tee. The long hole here is 16th, a par-5 that measures 528 yards from the Blue tee.
A round of golf on the Shelby Golf Course concludes on a par-4 hole that measures 364 yards from the Blue tee.

Average at Best
As municipal courses go, this one is average at best. It's very hilly with many blind shots. Not walkable. The greens were in fairly good shape but the fairways were hard as a rock. You literally couldn't get clean contact with the ball. Its not many times that I actually prefer to be in the rough! Only worth it when you go through Golf Now and book a "Hot Deal".
great 18 for the price
Had a great 18, the course was very well maintained. Looking forward to playing again. Staff was GREAT! m.carden
Ok, if nowhere else to go
Course is okay. Just about every hole is up/ down a big hill. A lot of uphill/ downhill/ side hill lies. Most of the greens are elevated so if you're short/ long the ball has no chance of staying next to the green as it will roll down the hill. This makes it hard because the greens are so small! Almost like the VA in Murfreesboro. We only paid $25 including tax so keep that in mind. Bring extra golf balls!!
Stay Home
This golf course should be closed down. Greens are bad, fairways very very very very bad. City is robbing golfers 28 dollars is to much. This course should be free. No one is keeping up with the maintenance of this golf course.
Nice course for value
I played both sat and sun. The small greens along with hilly landscape provided and interesting challenge.
nice
I enjoyed the course I like the elevation greens and the par 5's. You must go!!
Hills
This course has a lot more terrain than I thought it would. The front nine had a good amount of fallen leaves so straight shots are needed to keep you out of your ball pocket. GPS watches/apps not too helpful since they have winter and summer greens, you aren't sure which ones are being measured? I don't recall seeing any bunkers? Nice course, look forward to trying it again.
Good experience.
Small greens, very hilly, and a few blind holes. Not one sand trap on the course, which I'm ok with, since i seem to always find them. Great challenging course for the value, Will definitely play again.
Comeback
The course is in great shape, the greens are in great shape, the Manager Daryl and staff are first class.
Great improvement over all.
Fun course
This is a really fun course to play. It's not exceptionally long from the back tees. For a municipal course you can't beat it. The greens were receptive and the fairways and tee boxes were manicured. Worth playing again!
A nice course
A pleasant surprise while on vacation. Not a long course, but a good test with small elevated greens and plenty of trees. The greens were well kept and most tee boxes were good. I would love this as a regular course if I lived here. The carts were new and it was a good time and a fun place to play.
Fair shape hilly course
Needs some maintainence off the fairways. Greens in great shape. Tee boxes were shabby.
Stay away
Super, super hilly course. Looks like they took a piece of land good for nothing and decided to put a golf course on it. Add the horse flys buzzing around and the course not marked for distances or direction the holes go. A lot of blind shots also. Not a fun course to play
Better Options
The course itself is sub-par but maintains moderate value considering the cost.
However, the flaws in the course weren't the culprits of my unfavorable experience. Unfortunately, it was my interactions with what seemed to be a bit of an elitist staff of senior "gentlemen". Just trying to pay and get to the first hole, we were approached with what felt like a "you boy's ever been on a golf course?" mindset.
The vibe continued when we patiently waited for the twosome in front of us to find their shots in the rough and move onto the green. We took our shots and the guy I was playing with had to go find his ball (which he did in no more than 5min). Sure enough, here comes a ranger informing us we need to increase our pace of play. I'm not a great golfer, but I've played 20+ years, including for my high school years ago. I'm aware of how quickly a group should be moving along. Not to mention, there were only 2 of us.
The point is, people come to this course for the lax atmosphere of a public city course and these old guys thought they were running Pebble Beach. The only thing that resembled a beach out there were the greens made of 95% sand, causing for highly inconsistent speeds and the spitting of putts offline that was nothing short of laughable.
If you're looking for an affordable place to play, your money is better spent at Riverside, Two Rivers, or McCabe.
Friendly staff and good value
Great value for a round of golf. Conditions were good on some holes and not great on others. Biggest negative is there were no distance markers and no hole layouts. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. I will golf there again.
Interesting & Fun
Several tee boxes are rough, fairways aren't great, and greens aren't smooth, but it's a tight and thought-provoking tracks that works your game pretty well. :)
Great little course
Play here often to sharpen my short game. Short par 4's but challenging greens make this an ideal course for work on the short game. Overall great for the $$ but lose a lot of balls in the fairway!
Not for everyone!
Course was extremely slow play. Greens were practically impossible to get a ball to stay on if hit on the fly. Greens did putt fairly good but are small. Fairways were cut but had a lot of large dirt spots with no grass. Rough is just overgrown weeds. Ball in the rough is hard to find. Very hilly course and not long at all.
It's Ok.
Strange course compared to what is out there now....probably due to it's heritage being built in 1924, so not many long holes. You can leave the driver in the bag. Greens were of a different kind of grain, and bumpy overall. I would say play on a Hotdeal, if nothing else to support a course that is actually in town for locals.
