Sewanee course
Even though it’s only a 9-hole course, they have it laid out well. The scenery is fantastic (the whole area is gorgeous). The mountain air was far cooler than where I have been playing - very refreshing. I can’t say that the lighter air added any distance to my drives.
NOT WORTH $100
Played here with 6 buddies for a bachelor party. We paid for our round and the club pro didn’t tell us our price, didn’t think much of it. Checked my email on first tee box and saw I got charged $100. This course is not even close to being worth $100 for 18 holes. The greens and views were nice; however, the fairways and tee boxes were TERRIBLE. You also play the same 9 holes twice from different tee boxes. The way it works is they schedule you for two tee times (2 hrs per 9) so when we wanted to get food on the turn the pro was furious that we were going to be holding everyone up because we were going to be late for our next tee time and slow everyone down. Kind of ridiculous that they don’t give time for a bathroom and food break on the turn. Would not play here ever again unless they drop the price $50.
Windy Day
Positives: Course is in excellent condition. Greens were fantastic and sand traps were well maintained. The course obviously takes pride in maintenance on the course.
Negatives: It is only a nine hole golf course and it is terribly overpriced based on the rates that I have read about. My rate on Golf Now was fairly reasonable, However, the rates advertised on Golf Now are NOT supposed to include the cart fee. The App says cart included, but the print out sheet says green fee only. The management was very kind to waive the cart fee for me because of this conflict.
One of the best 9 hole courses in country
This is one of the best 9 hole courses in the country. Combine this with Sweetens Cove for 18 great holes.
Loved Hanse’s work, sublime, from the classic architecture, named holes and to top it off amazing views.
Academic Excellence
One of the best college courses in the country - only 9 holes, but with double;e tees and enough variety and beauty to keep you engaged for 18. Absolutely love it - heathland feel, with the occasional infinity edge mountain look. Great job by Gil hanse making this simple routing completely compelling. A great asset for the University of the South in this small town of Sewanee, TN>
Easily my favorite course on the Golf Advisor Getaway. If I lived in the area, I would play this course over and over. Great layout and the course was in great shape! The views were spectacular. Highly recommend playing this course if in the area.
Tennessee 9-hole two-steppin
Don't go to Sweetens without also playing Sewanee 30 mins away. Who knew Tennessee was the public 9-hole mecca of the country?
Gil Hanse extensively renovated this 100-year-old course, and at just $31-41 walking for 18 holes it's one of the best opportunities to see his work.
I'm not sure which course I like more. I played 45 holes at Sweetens but unfortunately only had time for 9 at Sewanee. They complement each other beautifully. Sewanee's greens are more traditional and subtle compared to Sweetens' wild ones. Sewanee's facilities are obviously superior to the BYOB nature of Sweetens. Sewanee's greens and surrounds were the finest of the trip and that included private Black Creek.
The layout has beautiful roll to it and is accentuated by the two infinity greens that overlook the mountains. If I was going to knock the layout, which is tough to do, I'd have preferred one of these greens be the culmination of a par 5 or long 4, and then make the nine's other par 3 a little different. I am nitpicking here.
There are a lot of 18-hole college courses that would surely trade with the University of the South's nine-holer in a heartbeat. It should be on any public must-play collegiate list.
Pleasantly surprised
I booked a tee time here as I was looking for another course to play as well as Sweetens Cove. I was extremely happy that I chose Sewanee.
Great practice area with enough room to hit off the turf, so I was a little disappointed that we had to hit off mats. Practice green was in identical condition as the course. I booked as a single and came across several other singles and twosomes, so it would have been nice if the shop paired people up to help the pace.
The course was in great condition, the greens were still healing a bit but still rolled well and fast. The amount of undulation in the greens made judging uphill and downhill putts challenging.
The course layout was fun. Sidehill lies, blind shots, deep bunkers, and big greens. Big enough that it would be neat if they used a 2nd flag for the back 9.
The views are amazing as you come up 1 and 8 to the INN and the par 3’s overlooking the valley below.
The pro shop/restaurant is tiny but great staff simple and delicious menu.
I joined up with a pro caliber player who said he likes Sewanee better than Sweetens so if you come to this area definitely try Sewanee.
Sewanee at its best
As a Sewanee alum, I am so pleased that Sewanee offers a public course that is as nice as the pictures. This course is something else, and anyone in the Nashville or Chattanooga area should make the drive up to the Domain and have themselves an enjoyable afternoon.
Forgot to add pictures....
Great round
Course is tight and challenging. Still fun though and the views are excellent. Pace of play was a bit slow and this is the most I have ever spent to play 9 holes. When I do it again I will do a morning round of 9 here, eat lunch and drive the 45 minutes over to Sweetens cove for an afternoon round.
Nice and relaxing
Had a great time with a couple of friends and my 10yr. son!!! Was a little wet so didn’t get to drive the cart.☹️ But first time walking and golfing still had fun. Will continue to go!!!!
Niiiiice 9 Holer
Great use of the land with some cool holes but keep your wits about ya ... golf balls flying all over due to the holes so close to each other. Drains really well, good track to play if its rained lately. Awesome place for all the kids at the University and local High School.
Beautiful Day for Golf
Golf course is in superb condition. Great design. However, the rack rate is MUCH TOO HIGH, but the course is walkable if you want to do so.
brilliant
Yes it's only 9 holes, but well worth your time to play again and again. The places is beautiful and the conditions are superb. There's challenge, two tough par 3s, a driveable par 4, and two great par 5s. I played 27 holes off different tees each time and loved it.
Best greens in middle Tn
The day we played the greens were awesome. Fast and would hold shots. The scenic views are no worth the fees not to mention this is one of the best 9 hole courses around. Plush fairways and deep pot bunkers.
Love the course
Played it 25 years ago and didn’t know they had redone the course. Loved the layout and the views are awesome. This is a hidden jewel. Can’t wait to play again.
Probably most scenic course I have ever played
This is a nine hole course with a multitude of tee boxes, fairly long with undulations in all the greens. The two par 3s are beautiful with mountain crest views behind greens. Good practice area, course is walkable. Greens are bent grass and in pretty fair condition, fairways are bermuda and very lush. Course is nicely bunkered and fairways are rolling with mostly elevated tees. Just a great course on top of Monteagle Mountain, an hour from Chattanooga or Murfreesboro.
Thank you for taking the time to review us. Your feedback is valuable, and we appreciate your business. The Course at Sewanee thanks you!
