Perfect round
By far the best course I have played in a while. Walked in to the pro who was very nice and welcoming after our 75 minute drive. We went off at 0800 hours and set our own pace with nobody to worry about. The course was not overly difficult but you had to think on a few shots, for the most part everything is laid our in front of you. The tee boxes were very flat and mowed close, fairways were amazing and the ball set up nicely, the greens were somewhat firm but very quick and receptive with quite a bit of undulation. The course's defenses are strategically placed bunkers and the tall links style rough. Will definitely be back to play this amazing course more often now.
Hidden Gem
Anyone from Nashville or Chattanooga or anyone driving on 24 between the 2 should plan to stop and play this wonderful 9 hole Championship layout you will be glad you did. Can be played as 18 also w different tees. Very challenging course with some incredible views from the top of the plateau.
Immaculate greens
Beautiful mountain course with fantastic fast challenging greens. David the assistant pro walked up to me on the putting green and introduced himself to me and my playing partner and asked us if we needed anything and any information about the course. We enjoyed it so much we invited a group from Texas to come and stay at this resort for a long weekend. Difficult but fair and great shape!
Great 9 hole course, beautiful bluff views
Grew up in Sewanee, played the old course and this was the 2nd time playing the new layout. Layout is great and the views are awesome. Staff could stand to be a little friendlier but wasn’t there to talk to them was there to play!
Thank you for the great review! We are thrilled that you enjoyed your experience and the great views. We hope to have you back again soon!
Don't Miss
Wonderful layout, dramatic views, and angles galore. Course was in perfect shape--greens rolled perfectly and were just firm enough but not too firm. Fairways were wonderful.
For someone who appreciates golf course architecture, this is a must play. The routing is superb and it is a fairly easy walk considering the mountain terrain. The course rolls through the hills forcing club choice decisions with longer par 5s as well as a devilish short par 4. The two par 3s provide absolutely stunning mountain views.
If you're in the area, don't miss this course.
Thank you so much for the excellent review and kind words! We're glad you enjoyed your experience with us and look forward to having you on the fairways again soon!
what a gem!
My wife & i loved playing this course, we played 2 days in a row. The views on 3 & 5 are awesome! It is a 9 hole course that you play on different tees the 2nd time thru. Staff is great. Look forward to coming back & hanging out on the mountain again & playing this course! Your ball goes further with the higher elevation. Enjoy!
Thank you so much for the excellent review & player feedback. We're glad you and your wife enjoyed the round and we look forward to having you back for more!
It was nice, but the round was described to be nine holes with cart. When we arrived at the course they would not let us use a cart to WET.
We appreciate the 5 stars and are sorry the conditions were not optimal for full cart - we hope to have you back soon for another 9! Thanks again for sharing your review.
Peaceful 9 holer at the top of the mountains
Teed off at 8 on a beautiful Saturday morning, and had the place to myself. They must not get too much play. It's a fun course, and was in good shape. Has some tough holes, and also some scoreable holes. Very quiet and peaceful. Nice view behind the 3rd green to the valley below. The pro was very nice. Only minor criticism was that the greens hadn't been mowed and were dew covered, making them slow and wet. But the pro said it had rained recently, so maybe that's why they hadn't mowed the greens.
We're so glad to hear you enjoyed your morning round a few months back. We appreciate you sharing your review - we've continued to improve on conditions through the season, so we hope to have you back for another 9 when you're in the area :)
Amazing
An amazing course for anyone
Thank you so much for the excellent review! Hope to have you back for the 2017 season!
Sewanee Golf
Great layout, friendly staff, great value in a fantastic layout. Better bring your "A" game as the course is very challenging. Greens were perfect, fairways a little dry due to very dry summer, but the course is still a must play. Lunch at the clubhouse restaurant was wonderful.
Thank you SO much for the awesome feedback! We work really hard to keep the course looking great and have the best service around, so we really appreciate you sharing your experience. Hope to see you out this spring & summer!
Hanse makes magic
Gil Hanse was hired in 2013 to give this course a facelift, and man he didn't disappoint. In the recent design trend of minimalism, Hanse carved a 9-hole course in Tennessee that harkens comparison to Pinehurst, Mid-Pines and Dormie Club. Natural, sandy waste areas abound and old-style bunkering and mounding allow for the fairways to roll in all different directions. What makes this course unique is that it is basically a links style course (complete with a Principle's Nose bunker) on top of the Cumberland Plateau. This provides beautiful vistas off a 1,000-foot drop behind the par-3 3rd hole. Another thing that makes this a must-play, is that despite being a nine-holer, there are two sets of tees that allow for a unique 18-hole experience. On the second loop around, par 5s turn into par 4s, so it is not just angles that change - the way you play holes change. Though I didn't stay there, the Inn on the property looked charming from the outside, as it surrounds the 8th green. The modest clubhouse and pro shop was very rustic, and the somewhat abbreviated driving range served its purpose very well. The Sewanee golf teams are very lucky to have such a nice facility to use. Combining this course with nearby Sweetens Cove, roughly 30 minutes away in South Pittsburg, would give any player the feel that they were in Southern Pines, NC, not southeast Tennessee.
Brandon, we cannot thank you enough for sharing this beautiful review last December. Hanse coming in was definitely a turning point, and we're just so thankful to get to share his gift with our golfers! Thanks for the excellent feedback - hope to have you back for a round when you're in the area.
Top 5 Public Course in TN
Yes, it only has 9 hole with different tee boxes for the back nine. But it is in immaculate shape. Requires some shot making and course management skills. The rough really can be treacherous on this course since the redesign around 2012. (I played here in the late 80's and it's much tougher now). Breathtaking views of the valley on a couple of holes. A must play for anyone who loves golf.
We cannot thank you enough for the excellent review! We're glad you enjoy the course and we look forward to having you back for a round soon. Thanks again!
Beautiful historical 9 hole golf course
To start with that the course was in outstanding shape considering the dry hot summer that we have had.The course is very scenic and has two par 3s that overlook the Tennessee wooded valley that is high in elevation. Now for the bad.there are a lot of tee boxes with logs that are painted on the ends some are White,Purple, gold,Purple and White,Black and white which make for some confusion. Also there are hardly any yardage marker in the fairways and cart paths that end and turn into dirt with no signs to help navigate thru this monkey puzzle maze. I think by them moving a couple of tee markers makes the course change but it does not, its still only 9 holes and 9 greens and they should leave it that way. But my main complaints the price $31 green fees $18 cart=$49 that to high for this course with only 9 greens.
Terry, we appreciate you sharing your feedback last year. We're glad you enjoyed the layout and conditions. We have continued to work on these issues through the off-season and hope to have you back this spring or summer 2017 to see improvements. $31 greens / $18 cart is for the 18 hole path and we feel it's very reasonable for a Gil Hanse design and fantastic conditions. Thank you for the feedback, we hope you'll join us for another round this year.
Sewanee
Played 9 holes around 15 til 1 pm on Sunday. The course layout had changed since playing 7-8 years ago. Had a great round, course can be challenging for a fair to average golfer, but for the value through Golfnow, will definitely play again.
Thanks so much, Rcobra! You're absolutely right - we had a complete redesign in 2013 from Olympic course designer Gil Hanse. We're so proud of our track, and can't thank you enough for sharing your great review. We hope to have you back soon!
Breathtaking course
Outstanding views. Fairways and greens were perfect. Some long par 4s. Sand traps make it more challenging.
Had an ace lip out from 183 on hole 4. Will be back!
What a great day! Thanks so much for the awesome review, we hope to have you back on the course soon. Way to go on 4 :)
Great nine hole course
Great nine hole course. The only complaint I have is that my gps devise would not work at course.
Thanks for sharing your feedback, and we're glad you enjoyed the course.
GPS should bow work at the course
A hidden gem
Some may be put off by the fact that this is a 9-hole course. Well, they shouldn't be, because Sewanee is as good a golf course as you're going to set foot on, and is a blast to play. It has elements of a mountain course, great sand, and absolutely perfect greens. We got a discounted tee time through GolfNow, but I'd play for full price anytime. Matt at the clubhouse was great to work with, and can't recommend the Inn at Sewanee enough (overlooks the course). It's a world-class place to stay, and vey convenient to the golf course and University of the South.
Wow, thank you so much for the excellent review! As much work as we put in to having an immaculate track, we hold our customer service at the same level and are just so glad to hear of your experience. Thanks so much for sharing your feedback, we hope to see you again soon!
Under construction.
Clubhouse is nearly finished. Course construction looks to be 99% complete. Cart paths are too dusty, remedy needed..! Greens were excellent. Love playing a course that is over 100 years old..!
Thanks for sharing your feedback. In the months since your review: clubhouse is complete! Old trailer is out! We hope you'll stop in again this season to see the progress! We're definitely proud of the course's history, thanks for sharing.
Sewanee Mountain Top Golf
This is the second time I have played this course. They are building a permanent clubhouse now and the greens were aerated when we played. The fairways being in April I thought could be better, but maybe being on top of a mountain played a part in that. The views from a couple of the par three's is spectacular! The staff was very nice, but I'm hoping that with time this nine hole course grows into something very nice. With this being in Sewanee I would think money wouldn't be a problem, but maybe there more concerned about other things other than golf.
We appreciate you sharing your feedback and noting that the views and the staff were great. The clubhouse is complete and we've been getting excellent reviews on conditions this season. We hope you'll give us another round soon to see!
great views
This 9 holes is absolutely spectacular and not something that can be found in many places, especially in the south. The views are unreal and the course is typically in good shape but with slow green speeds. Gil Hanse did a fantastic job with the redesign and the course certainly deserves the awards it has won! They are currently building a permanent clubhouse that will include a restaurant and a bar with a great outdoor deck that is sure to only enhance the experience.
The clubhouse is complete and we hope you've been back or will be back soon to check it out! We could not be more proud of the Hanse redesign. Thanks for sharing your feedback, cheers!
We were delighted to read your review! We are glad that you enjoyed your experience and even decided to bring a group from Texas too! We look forward to having you back again soon!
