Windcrest Golf Club
About
Formerly a private club, Windcrest Golf Club is now open for public play. This nine-hole course is tight in some spots with a traditional layout that calls for a variety of different shots. Tree-lined fairways and elevated greens protected by bunkers require sharp short game skills and accurate placement off the tees. Water hazards also come into play on two holes. With four sets of tees, the golf course is perfect for juniors and beginners who want some practice or avid golfers wanting a quick round. One of the most appealing things about Windcrest Golf Club is that it doesn't get especially crowded on weekends, meaning tee times are rarely required.

Greens are equal mix of sand and grass
Only 9 holes which you play from different tees to make it 18. Staff was friendly. Course was not well maintained. Putting was infuriating due to unpredictable greens because of all the sand on them, plenty of bare patches too.
Great bang for your buck
I am by no means an avid golfer but I have been trying to play more as of lately. This course has somewhat forgiving fairways but not too much where you can't lose some balls. Has a nice mix of par 3s, short and long 4's, and a par 5 at hole 9. The course conditions were really good except for the greens which had just been aerated which is understandable. Beer prices are pretty decent as well; $13 for a 6 pack domestics. Fun golf course where you won't feel intimidated from serious golfers.
payment problems
Tried to book round for myself and two friends. I was shut out at (1) special rate for myself after ordering (3). I then paid for the other (2) a regular rate at next available time. The total between the two bookings was over $80. Got to the course (very small 9 hole)and they made my friends pay another $60 plus dollars. Called the next Monday after looking at my checking account. Manager wasn't going to be in until Friday. Man on the phone said to call then and that Saturday was huge snafu. NOT HAPPY
Great value.
Excellent value. Exceeded my expectations. I will definetly be back. Since it was a 9 hole course and we played 18 holes we just played from different tee locations and had a great time. The food at the grill was good and the drinks were reasonably priced.
Not a course id go back too
narrow fairways very short holes Greens not very good condition fairways are terrible
Rather Not
9-holes, play it twice.... fairways pretty bare, not necessarily for me. Good place for a walking experience probably
One of the best 9 hole courses I've played
A true hidden gem. Soo many people in the area have no clue this beauty is located just minutes away. Fareways and greens are always in great condition. The food and prices are exceptional!!!
Inexpensive 9-hole course in an older Windcrest neighborhood.
In a nutshell, a fairly flat, fairly easy, inexpensive, short, 9-hole facility located in a modest, older, Northeast San Antonio neighborhood. The facility seems frozen in time - 1950, or so - and a good portion of the place is in serious need of updating, or at least some serious TLC. I must say, however, that the course itself is not all that bad - a notch or two better than Alamo Golf Club, a comparable, inexpensive course in the Northwest part of town.
Bordered by four city streets, there are ample opportunities to scuff up a ball or two on the asphalt and perhaps ding up a car parked in a nearby driveway.
Four holes may require a driver - 1, 2, 5 and definitely 9; three holes are relatively short par threes - 3, 6 (with a well-designed water hazard complete with spewing fountain in the middle) and 7; 4 is a dogleg right and 7 is a dogleg left, both relatively short holes requiring well placed tee shots.
I have played this course several times and almost every time I end up behind a foursome of elderly golfers, which this course seems to cater to. Today it was a four elderly ladies with another foursome of elderly gents playing immediately ahead of them. I politely asked to play through and the ladies agreed, while the elderly gentlemen made no effort to be accommodating. So my 9 holes took a while. Oh well, it was a beautiful day and I took advantage of the slow play to hit two or three balls on every hole.
If you play 18 holes here, the back tees are just far enough back from the white tees to make the course feel different, so I play the blue tees on the "front" and white tees on the "back."
Amenities are spartan although there is one water station midway and another on the 1st tee. They have a batter's cage that serves as a warm-up, although it is falling apart and the backstops torn and tattered in many spots. I didn't bother since the mat was waterlogged and missing the tee.
There is a small chipping green that is really rather well maintained although the grass surrounding it was very uneven - some way too tall and some spots bare and some spots just right.
I have to admit that I do use this course a couple of times a month for a practice round because it's so cheap. Just like me.
Horrible Greens
The greens were in really poor condition.
The course is pleasant to play.
There is plenty of shade trees and the course is well maintained for its age. You do not usually have to wait as play moves along well.
good course when it gets rain
Nice course to practice and use all your clubs.
a 9 hole course sometimes makes it hard to play when a group comes around for its second 9 and your group is wanting to start. Other than that it is a quick
par 34 (9) and the course is nice when they get rain.
Great little short course
The fairways were in excellent...not so much the greens. Unfortunately at this time of year, putting on most greens was like putting on a waffle....mostly dry brown grass accented with little tufts of green grass!
The course is challenging, but only at a moderate level. There is only one par 5, so it fits closer to an executive par 3 rating.
I loved playing there, and I encourage others to try this hidden gem!
Quiet Course
The course was in good shape with only a few other golfers on the course when I played on Sunday afternoon. I couldn't believe how quiet it was. Overall it was fun to play but there were two down sides. One my cart broke down but the staff brought me a new one. Second this is only a 9 hole course. I paid for 18 through golfnow and you can go around a second time but its the same holes.
Not valid for GHIN
When i booked the tee time it should have told me the course is not valid for posting a score on ghin.com
Had a blast!
It is a short but fun course to play! The greens were in great shape and had challenging pin placements! Would recommend to play!
Nice little get away!!
Course is built on a city block nice little 9 hole course. Can't beat the value and conditions are always nice. Greens are nice and fairways are nice. Some real easy holes and some that take a little shot shaping. Great course to play when you want to get a quick round in. The longest par 3 is about 160 from the tips.
Short course with tight fairways
This was my first time playing at this course. I was disappointed that it is only a nine hole course as that was not made clear to me until I got there. I paid for 18 holes before realizing that you simply played the same nine holes twice, from varying tees. TIght fairways were the biggest challenge, but the greens were well kept. Fairways were in rough shape honestly.
Friendly Course
Really enjoyed my round and Windcrest. Starter was very friendly and considerate. The club was in good shape the greens Rolled true. Not an overpowering course but challenging for all skill levels. Water jugs were always field which is nice since some of the high in courses forget to refill theirs. Value for the money was excellent carts were very nice. And when it was beginning to rain this staryer notified when it was time to come in.
Excellent course excellent service highly recommended
I'm a member of this golf course and play here regularly.
The greens are in excellent condition and rolling smooth and fast. (Played this morning)
