Great layout; not very busy on a Wednesday morning

The helpful starter/pro shop guy gave me several options when I arrived early, and I decided to tee off earlier to be ahead of a few groups. I never had to wait and finished in less than 4 hours. There are many interesting holes on this gently rolling course, with plenty of length if you want it. This course once held the Va State Open, but I am sure the greens were faster and the fairways narrower then. The carts looked brand new.

Great course in great condition!

Love this course since it is so challenging. Long par fours with fairness. Great conditions right now. Able to play at own pace due to few players on day that I played. Staff friendly and accommodating. Would recommend it to anyone based on price and course conditions! Choose forward tees if distance is an issue.

This is one of my favorite courses to play in central Virginia.

The Royal Virginian Golf Course conditions are improving by leaps and bounds with the new owner. The Greens are in great shape and roll true.

The overall lay out of this course suits the long ball hitter who wants to hit every club in the bag, making it both challenging and truly enjoyable to play. This is not a course for duffers or players lacking the experience of golf course management or golf etiquette.

I learned to play golf more than 50 years ago as a caddie and have had the privilege to play some of the finest and exclusive golf courses in Virginia and I can say with without reservation that once improvements are complete this will once again be a golfer's magnet in Virginia also.

Great Layout

This course is making a great comeback. The fairways and greens are improving steadily. New ownership is making great progress in the restoration of the course.

Horrible Value

So much potential...if someone only paid attention to it! The lumpy/unmown teeboxes, weed filled fairways, and inattentive staff makes this course a horrible value. The greens were in decent shape, but that's about the only positive part of the course. Recommend spending a few extra dollars and driving a few more miles to play at another course.

Beautiful setting, exceptional potential.

Beautiful location, quiet, this course will be great as the ownership continues to restore it.

Down on the Farm

If you like playing golf on old farms than this is your place. The course is something. The tee boxes were rolling at best. Was hard to find a flat spot to tee it up. Greens were ok.

Could be a great track! Poor Leadership holds it back!

6/6 first time there, not too busy, no one else signed up with me on Golf Now at the tee time. I asked the (Pro) guy who waited on me, is there anything I need to know about the course as I had never been there? "Oh yea we punched the greens yesterday!" 1. Supposed to inform Golf Now 2. Your kidding me, I drove an hour to find out the greens were punched! His response, "I didn't know we were going to do it" . Mine WHAT? How could you not know? Went out on my own, first tee box un-mown, at least that day. The track itself is a great layout, challenging, long from the blues. I played 13 holes in an hour and a half (no one else around?). Hole 14 I encounter a 5 some of hackers and they are deathly slow. Never acknowledge me or ask me to play through, hence I play 5 holes in an hour and wait and wait. Finally finished I ask the (Pro)? guy in the shop "Did you send out a 5 some?" His reply "Well yeah we allow 5 somes but! they have to promise to let you play through" What a response, no marshal, no leadership, just "sorry". Didn't even offer a return round of golf, I think I know why it was so wide open and I didn't see others!

The greens were very well maintained. Some of the most challenging par 4s that I have encountered.

Very good value for the money (would rate as best I've come across if some discount was offered- didn't have it shown if it was at $36) in comparison to some courses I've played in Richmond at that price it higher. The course conditions were very good and the greens impressive to me (I've really just started playing seriously so my sample size is about 10 different courses for comparison). For example, Belmont is about the same price but this course is more challenging and in considerable better conditions. I love 5 miles from Belmont but would make the trip there any time I have the opportunity. I wish they offered more discounts; however, the price is more than fair. They have a customer in me.
