The Gauntlet Golf Club
About
The Gauntlet is situated along the banks of the lake that is the centerpiece of Curtis Memorial Park. When it first opened in 1995, Golf Digest recognized it as one of the "top ten new courses to play in the U.S." This challenging layout will definitely test your shot making abilities. The golf course begins with a tough front nine that has several sharp doglegs over water and tall grasses. There are also a slew of blind shots. The back nine is a bit gentler since there's less water and it is more open and forgiving, but the large, multi-tiered greens can be tricky. The fourth hole is the golf course's signature. Your tee shot will have to carry a marsh to a narrow landing area on this par 5. After that, you'll be faced with a triple-tiered green with the lake to the left and bunkers to the right.

Nice course, needs some maintenance
The course needs some maintenance, but we've had a pretty hot and dry spell. Some of the fairways have large brown/dead areas. Some of the greens are suffering from the heat and lack of water, causing bald areas. All of the greens have invasive grasses in spots, probably crab grass. The bunkers are really bad...not sand, but hard crusty dirt. The course has a lot of blind tee shots, which I really don't like. However, the staff is awesome -- very friendly and accommodating. We played the first nine in under two hours, but then ran into some slow groups on the back. Overall, it's not a bad place for the price I paid, but I got a great deal through GolfNow.
Great Fall Golf
Course was in great condition, except for some of the tee boxes and bunkers, which were a little rough and barren of sand. Fairways were excellent and greens were outstanding. Last played in late 90s ... Would definitely play again.
Bring your rangefinder!
As I was well aware, there are many blind shots and layups off the tee box. If you don't have a rangefinder then purchase one or you will be wrong on yardage most of the day. That is downside.
The upside is the course is in great shape and well maintained by the staff. It is short, but that is due to many dogleg throughout the layout. I look forward to going back, but not without more technology in hand. Maybe you add GPS to your golf carts? Maybe you Mark sprinkler heads?
Not a Bad Day
I haven't played here in over a year. The course was really in good condition and as challenging as ever. Randy the starter was fantastic and kept the pace steady. I would certainly consider coming back during the week if the prices were more reasonable.
Best condition of any course in area.
I’ve played this course over the past few years and it is in by far the best condition of any course in the area. It’s a tough layout that is so enjoyable to play when the fairways and greens are so nice. If you played it in the past and the greens were not great you should definitely see it now.
Too crowded
Nice course, but is overwhelmed and crowded. Can't get on practice range. Between members, volunteers and other guests impossible to get a tee time early and the early times are locked down for select members! I'm done....
Excellent greens and fairways. However, the tee boxes are surprisingly poor
Gauntlet Golf
The Gauntlet course itself was in good condition. The layout was beautiful. The speed of play however was very very slow. There needed to be a course ranger out in course and urge the pace of play to speed up. It took over 5 hours to complete 14 holes.
Nice layout
Tees not in good shape. Greens bumpy. Tough course but I would come back.
Challenging course
What a nice course! Lots of blind shots,, some tricky dog legs, shots over water, uphill and downhill greens, Enjoyed that round!
Rough Conditions
The course layout and pace of play was excellent but the condition of the tee boxes and greens were horrible. On more than a handful of occasions putts would kick 90 degrees to the left or right after hitting a rough patch (I.e., weeds and dirt). Several of the tee boxes (tips) didn’t have any grass at all and comparable to hitting off a softball infield. Mid week, mid day price of $70 is overpriced given the conditions.
IT’s February
Really not fair to rate a golf course in Virginia in the month of February. Overall the course is good for winter play, but the greens are really in rough shape. Couldn’t really putt on them.
Only if you get a discount
If.you pay full price for this course, you are crazy. Not sure how they get away with their $60 greens fees. Greens are a nightmare. Playing plinko on the whole course. You can score low if you get on one, but there are some strange holes. 5 is a mess. They finally opened 13 green, but it was very sandy.
