The Gauntlet Golf Club
About
The Gauntlet is situated along the banks of the lake that is the centerpiece of Curtis Memorial Park. When it first opened in 1995, Golf Digest recognized it as one of the "top ten new courses to play in the U.S." This challenging layout will definitely test your shot making abilities. The golf course begins with a tough front nine that has several sharp doglegs over water and tall grasses. There are also a slew of blind shots. The back nine is a bit gentler since there's less water and it is more open and forgiving, but the large, multi-tiered greens can be tricky. The fourth hole is the golf course's signature. Your tee shot will have to carry a marsh to a narrow landing area on this par 5. After that, you'll be faced with a triple-tiered green with the lake to the left and bunkers to the right.

Always Fun
Gauntlet is always fun to play. Lots of blind shots though. Course was in nice shape. Needs some more work but it’s getting there.
Driving range and practice facilities so that’s always a plus.
Much Improved Since My Last Visit
I last played The Gauntlet in October of 2017 and I'm glad to report this most recent experience was much improved. The staff could not have been more friendly and welcoming, the conditions were excellent (for mid-February) and they even gave me a discounted walking rate that made it easily worth the hour+ drive from Richmond.
They've added an additional tee box (green) to the course to help pace of play and play-ability as well.
There are also fewer trees on the course then last I played here and that made the golfing all the more enjoyable. They recently began doing some course maintenance that's designed to help the grass grow in sooner and stronger in the spring, so I'm excited to come back and play again soon!
It was all I could ask for
Greetings. This was a first time play for me at Gauntlet. Even though Feb 17, the experience was awesome. Course was in good condition for this time of year. A very challenging P B Dye course with some long and some shorter holes but with several twists and turns. This is not your flatland, easy type of course. The Bermuda fairways may have been dormant but were in good shape as were the greens. The staff was very helpful and fun to talk to. Even having a cold beer afterwards while sitting on the deck was a great way to wind down. I will definitely be back.
Great day of golf
Love the challenge of the gauntlet. Wonderful staff. Great beer selection on the 19th hole
Challenging (and scenic!) course
Played here in the dead of winter, late Dec 2020. Fairways were all dried and brown. Which is expected for this time of year. Greens were firm but about a third had pock marks that interfered with my putting. Again, understandable for this time of year. The course layout was a very pleasant surprise and just the right level of challenging, for me (+10). Gauntlet will challenge your distance control and line so bring your A game. (Found out later it was designed by P. B. Dye. That figures.) Greens have lots of undulations so watch out. I haven’t seen Gauntlet in peak season and I can’t wait to find out. I will be putting up with the atrocious on 95-South traffic to play here sometime in 2021 season.
Not worth making the drive
Not worth making the drive. Greens have patches all over the place. Overall not a great course to play.
Course is good. The greens are still recovering, but the fairways and rest of the course are great.
In very good shape.
I was initially hesitant to play the course due to local rumors of its bad condition. However the fungus that made it terrible is completely gone the course, except the tee boxes, is in great shape. Greens are speedy and deceptive. The layout is challenging but very manageable for a mid-handicapper. I will definitely accept an invitations to return and play throughout the season.
Nice winter golf
We went and walked 18. Greens were a little hairy but fun time.
Challenging Course
Great course with a variety of challenging holes. Course was in decent condition for winter January golf. I will definitely be back again!
Great Staff
My brother came up from Suffolk and I drove down from PA, met half way to play a round of golf.
The two ladies working the club house (I can’t remember their names) but let me tell you. Those two are among the best in the business. Their knowledge of the course and their hospitality is awesome. Those two ladies made the trip worth the 3 hour drive to play.
The course was in great shape concerning it was late December, pace of play was awesome, only had to wait on a few holes due to blind shots and not knowing if we should tee off yet.
This course is now our meeting spot to play in the future.
Don’t bother
This course is in the middle of nowhere. The good news it was out in the country surrounded by trees and autumn colors. That’s the best I can say. The layout is pretty challenging with quite a few blind shots. The course conditions ranged from ok to poor. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were patchy. The bunkers and traps were mostly hard pan or mud with weeds growing up. The pace of play was g l a c I a l ! I had to wait for the group in front of me who was waiting for the group in front of them as far as the eye could see in front and behind us. This track could use some change of management, quickly.
It’s not worth the drive- don’t bother
1st Time Here...awesome experience
This was our first time playing here. Staff was excellent! Gave me a yardage book and even told me areas to watch for and places to aim for a better round. Course was in very good condition and there were lots of golfers out. Pace of play was ok...considering the amount of golfers. Definitely will play here again!! Thanks again for a very good experience!
Great Round
Course was in great shape. Greens were firm and faster than normal. Made for a real challenge but was more than fair. Incredible value even at full price. Will play again and again. Club house staff couldn’t have been nicer and or more professional. Stayed for lunch and wasn’t disappointed.
I’ll be adding this into my monthly rotation.
Very challenging
This course kicked my butt.
Will be back after practice.
Up and Down and All Around
Played here while traveling. It was definitely different from the short, flat courses we're used to in Florida. Every hole was up and down and either left or right. It was fun to play but I wouldn't want to walk the course.
We are very sorry for your recent experience at the Gauntlet Golf Club. We are a new management company that is taking our role with the county very seriously. As you stated, there are several areas of concerns with the course and I can assure you that our list is even longer than yours. This process will take time, but we are committed to providing the highest quality product at the most reasonable price.
