Great course but needs some TLC
This course is in terrible shape. Tee boxes and greens are unkept and in need of basic maintenance. This course is not recommended though the price was cheap. I recommend playing somewhere else in this area.
Welcomed an opportunity to play several games at Mariner's Landing G.C, the week of July 16th through July 20th.
The course, like most others in the area, is having to deal with a few weeks of little rain.
The grounds crew's hard work is evident in working to keep the course playable, and in the best shape possible.
The course layout provides a nice combination of hole locations, all of which create a good balance of shot placements and strategies.
The clubhouse grill makes a nice sandwich to enjoy at either the "Turn" or after a finished round.
Enjoyable rounds of golf ... Definitely will be back.
MUST PLAY THIS COURSE
Best layout in the area with amazing views of the lake. Course is in great shape and the staff is super friendly. Also the 19th grill has the best cheeseburgers in town!!! If you havent played this track you are missing out.
Enjoyed this course and staff great shape and layout when in the area a must play
Great atmosphere friendly staff and the course is in great shape. I would recommend this course to anyone.
This course has a decent enough layout, but lacks proper maintenance. Greens have been in terrible condition the past several years. I would play Westlake, Roanoke CC, or London Downs before I would play here.
Find Elsewhere to play!!! Waste of money and time!
Drove 2 hours to meet a friend camping at SML so we could golf on Sunday morning. All i can say about this place is it is TERRIBLE!!! Teebox area full of crabgrass and not cut, Greens are awful!!! Patches of sand and grass completely gone from most greens. Fairways did not differentiate between rough and fairway. Landscaping was lacking to say the least, bunkers about the nicest feature on this track. Honestly, I would not go back and play this course if it were FREE! Find another course, or suffer through 4 hours you cant get back.
Nice Place .. Future Looks Bright
We had an opportunity to play two 9 hole rounds at Mariner's Landing in Mid-September. The course had a few rough patches, but considering the long hot summer the grounds crew has done a remarkable job of keeping the course playable.
Having been to both high end and new start-up courses, I've always found the big difference isn't always the setting or palatial style clubhouses but rather in how you are treated whether a first time golfer or seasoned veteran of the game.
The staff at Mariner's Landing takes the time to make each guest feel welcome, and the relaxed aura of the course creates a winning combination.
The clubhouse has a small grill, perfect for a tasty sandwich after a few hours of enjoying relaxing golf without the distraction of vehicle traffic and condos at every turn.
The beauty of fall weather will only enhance the experience, and the 5th hole at the lake is "Picture Perfect"!
We'll definitely, return to Mariner's Landing.
Thank you so much for the great feedback. We hold customer service as just as high a responsibility as maintaining course conditions - we're glad to hear that you had a good experience with both. Thanks so much for sharing your feedback and we look forward to having you back for a round this year!
Nice area and Nice Course
A very enjoyable round of golf. The views of the mountains and Lake were exceptional. Par 3 #5 offers fantastic scenary. The staff was friendly and course was in good shape. Bentgrass Greens were very true. Not alot of landscping and extra dollars spent here but couse was solid.
We realize this review was from last season but we're happy to hear it and are looking forward to having you back this year! Thanks for sharing your experience!
A Good Variety of Holes
The course offers very good par 3s with one located with a great Lake view and one over a marsh. A good mix of par 4s and 2 strong par 5s on the back. Several risk reward holes. A very enjoyable course to play and scenic views throughout the course.
Thank you so much for the amazing feedback, it is greatly appreciate it! We hope to see you out here again soon!
I was invited by some friends to play Mariners Landing in an outing at Smith Mountain Lake. I live about 2 and half hours away and it was well worth the drive. The staff was very professional and the golf course proved to be a tremendous layout in very good condition. The greens rolled very true and expect nice lies around the greens. We had a great time. If you are in the area you may want to stop in and play this one.
Nice staff/Poor conditions
Small facility with small clubhouse but staff was friendly. Got a good deal on Golfnow.com so it wasn't too bad of an experience. The course layout and some holes were fun with one par three on the lake that was pretty cool, some many par 5's on the back. Conditions of the tees and fairways were some of the worst I have seen in the area. Greens were super slow but fairly plush and soft. Pace was ok since it wasn't busy at all.
Fun course to play with a variety of holes- not boring
i had a great time and the price was fantastic. The course was in great shape helped by the Spring rains. Some of the holes are difficult, but fair. You need to be able to hit your drive straight or the woods await you. The water holes are very pretty, but again a good shot and you are fine- miss it and go to the bag. Putting green is adequate and if I had enough time I would have taken advantage of the driving range. The staff is very nice and would be great if they had a larger selection of food for lunch. All in all it is a very fun course which I have played several times on vacation.
I am not a member. This is the course that I play more than any other because the staff treats us as members.
I enjoy every round here. The view of Smith Mountain from the signature 5th hole is great. The layout is second to none in this area. You will need to make good shots to keep the ball in play. If you do not have to ad any penalty strokes for balls in the water a low score can be had here. They have a well stocked pro shop in season. The conditions of the greens have been great thru the Fall and winter if you do not mind rolling the ball in the fairway or rough to find a good lie overall playability of the course is good. The conditions of the course get better every year. I would love to see it get more play so they could invest back into the course.
Best shape it has been in years.
The tee boxes and greens were in great shape. Greens were firm and putted true. In some places the fairways were spotted with different kinds of grass but not patchy with dirt. Very enjoyable round, not slowed down or rushed. When I pulled in the parking lot there was maybe ten cars and when I left there were only four.
Great course, fairways need watering
I've played this course a number of times and it has a lot of challenge. There is water, elevation changes, trees, marsh, etc. It requires some smart play to score well. The greens are typically in great shape and roll true. They are fast, but not super fast. Some are multi-tiered. The clubhouse and staff are OK, but nothing special. The driving range is acceptable. The only real drawback are the fairways. They always seem like they could use watering or more care. There are some bare patches on several of them. Still, if you like a challenging course, and you can deal with less than pristine fairways, this course is an excellent value.
