Hit’em Straight Or Hit’em A Lot!
I played Sewell’s Point many times years ago when I lived in the area. I was back in town recently and was feeling nostalgic so I thought I’d give it another go.
Not much has changed in the past four years or so. The course is still pretty basic in its layout and kept in good condition. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is very flat with very little to make you think before you swing. There are few water hazards, no real forced carries, certainly no blind shots from the tee or fairway. There are bunkers but they are generally off to the side and aren’t difficult to get out of if you hit a wayward approach shot.
Speaking of wayward shots, the only real challenge to this course is teeing off. If you can’t hit it straight, you might be in for a long day. Nearly every fairway is lined with trees and some of them are pretty narrow. I lost count of how many times I was punching out from under them or looking for my ball that had gotten caught up in them. If you hit into them nearer the tee box, it can be very penalizing as getting to an approachable distance to the hole can take more than one extra swing.
That aside, this is a pretty easy course, the price is pretty fair. They had JUST sanded the greens when I arrived but other than getting sand everywhere it wasn’t a big issue.
The staff is pretty friendly and off-course amenities are standard, nothing fancy here. If you’re in town and just want to play some golf, this isn’t a bad course to do so. Just bring a straight tee shot or some extra patience!
Not great
The course is not ready to play, no grass in the fairways, greens not rolling true. Driving range looks tired. Disappointing experience
Early Spring conditions
After getting nearly 4 inches of rain two days prior, the course was in surprisingly good condition. It was cart path only (understandable), and the greens have the typical poa you expect at this time of year, but most rolled true. In a couple of months, they'll have it in top shape.
Out of season
Since I usually play in the Pennsylvania area, I found the dormant Bermuda tough to play but truly enjoyed the course layout and believe in season it is probably I beautiful course. One thing is sure the greens were very nice, fast just like I like them. I would and probably will return hopefully in season.
Good time, beautiful weather
Course recovering from a week of rain, but all in all in good condition. Always fun time with great staff.
Will play here again
Alwasy a good course to challenge ones self.
Excellent green fee from Golf Now too.
Fun course.
In great shape for this time of year. Greens very fast, watch out for the little weeds- they'll knock your ball off line.
An average course when you want to get a quick round in
First time playing this course. Didn't know that it's a military base course. Staff are extremely friendly! Course could be better. Some of the tee boxes devoid of grass. Sometimes I couldn't tell if I was on the fairway or the rough. On 18, I teed off and my drive hit the fairway and a cloud of dust cans up. I will consider this as "early in the season " conditions. But I would come back here again if in town.
Great course
This is the first time I have played this course. Loved the course it’s in great shape and welll worth the price I will definitely playing the course
Nice course, friendly staff. Some new staff that don't know when to let golfers play thru instead of getting their job done but was addressed.
Sewells Point
Played with 2 others. The course works well for the average player and can get a good score. Most holes are fairly straight. and easy to hit around the water hazards. Greens were in good condition. Will go back!
Very nice traditional layout
My favorite course to play in Virginia Beach area. Very friendly and courteous staff. Greens roll excellent😀😀😀
