First Time Playing

Great value, decent greens, challenging layout.

First time playing this course. Very inexpensive. Short course but almost very hole is a dog leg, some with blind shots, which made it challenging, and very tight. The greens were in decent shape, way better than you’d expect for the price. Fairways and tee boxes were fine. The rough was very thin, not much grass at all. Due to this chipping around the greens was tough. Right now, don’t go there expecting a country club experience, closer to a step above a muni, but all in all a fun little track. Be very good if the roughs were grown in and they put some type of distance markers at the bends of the dog legs so you could shoot them off the tee. I live in the area, definitely will return.

Hidden Gem - great value

This course will challenge you with lots of dog legs and elevated greens. The course is maintained well and a great value especially compared to courses in vicinity.
Pace of play is generally outstanding with play consistently under 4 hours.

Beat the locals

When scheduling the tee time, they mentioned that the local men group starts at 830, and they scheduled us for 8 and when we arrived, they even started us at 740, so a great big thank you to them for doing that.
The bad part of course, is that the dew on the grass doesn't give us that roll we need at times, but it was all gone about 1/2 way through.
There were some good holes and lots of dog legs as mentioned in other reviews. But, it was a good course to play before heading out from Williamsburg area.

Good Value

After reading a few of the other recent reviews I gave this track a try. As some others have stated almost every hole dog legs one way or the other. The course isn't overly long with a tee box to match your game. The fairways are definitely on the more narrow side compared to some of the more modern American designs in the area. The tee boxes were all in solid shape. No real bare spots and I didn't notice any that were not level. The fairways despite being narrow like I said were in great shape. They rolled out but nothing extreme. The grass was manicured and the rough was fair. The greens were in solid shape considering it is the end of the playing season for many people. I did notice a couple greens that were showing some wear and tear. Most noticeably the 17th was in rough shape to say the least. I really enjoyed the layout overall. The back nine has a different feel than the front. There are 3 Par 5's on the back nine. With all the dog legs I was forced to pick the appropriate club off the tee which I enjoy from a course. All in all you can tell that this course was designed in the 70's and that the clubhouse is the same today as it was back then. Due to the value(price indicated included cart), overall conditions of the course and pace of play I gave this 4 out of 5 stars. I will be back again to play here.

If you like doglegs

Older course that's in ok condition . Greens and fairways a little weak and burned but for the most part good. Dogleg left and dogleg right is the design . Long par 5s and some short par 4s but the challenge here is knowing distance to the turn and play accordingly . Not much elevation change or forced carries . We played mid morning Tuesday and got caught behind senior group I think playing captains choice , kept dropping and all hitting , but spent a lot of time doing so. Hot and muggy so slower pace was exaggerated . Good value thou and ladies in the grill are very friendly and serve up good hot dog or cheeseburger and the beer is very cold .

Front 9 Perfect, Back 9 Aerated

I consider Brookwoods my home course, as I play here 8-10 times a year. This was my second time playing here in 2017 and I have to say the course was in fantastic shape this early in the season. Most fairways are growing in and greening up quite nicely, while the primary rough is still mostly brown. The only areas that could use some TLC are the approach areas around a lot of the greens. They are still patchy and uneven. There is plenty of sand in the bunkers and, until a few days prior to our round, the greens were smooth and straight. The back nine has just been aerated and was completely sandy- almost too much so and nearly unplayable. I realize it's that time of year and most other courses are also gearing up for spring golf. I just wish they'd allow groups to replay the front instead of struggling through the back nine and ruining chances for great scores.

The staff here is usually pretty friendly and the clubhouse is a bit dated, but still has everything you require for a quick bite mid-round or a couple of beers on the 19th hole. It also looks like they purchased new golf carts for 2017.

Overall, this is my favorite course in central Virginia, and I look forward to playing a lot of rounds here throughout the year. I just wish they'd offer up some discount rates from time to time through an online agent or even on their own website.

Usually great course conditions, moderately challenging layout and always a good time. I highly recommend this course.

Cold but course was hot

Very nice layout and for this time of year course in great shape. Tees good , fairways green and greens very good. Being cold day had course to ourselves but dress right, bring hot coffee thermos and we had a blast and never felt the weather. Nice clubhouse and lunch bar. Friendly staff and great value. Layout goes left on front nine then right on back nine, so hook or slice you have your opportunity . Will be back soon .

Bring your B game... and that's not an insult. Great course for middle handicappers... tough tract for beginners though.

Love playing Brookwoods... Good conditions, great staff, true greens and a variety of hole layouts. Some teeboxes need returfing and yardage markers are rather rare. Front nine is mostly draw/right to left ball flights and back nine is the opposite... so you get to hit every shot. Some forced carries and some water but nothing unfair or scary for decent players... so you get to hit every club in the bag. Overall, a nice course you should def visit. Not overplayed and greens fees are low.
