Fair course, but overpriced.
Belmont is a Henrico county owned course, so its budget is probably the least of the counties worries and it reflects on the course, clubhouse, staff and amenities.
However, the fairways and tee boxes are usually well kept...Greens need some improvement. Watch out for certain bunkers as they will be full of rocks.
Overall, I gave an average rating, because the course is a manageable, decent easy course...but the staff and lack of amenities does not justify cost.
Waste of money
Staff is incompetent and unfriendly. Course conditions terrible, fairways were unkept, greens were long and slow. Greens were very spotty and burned out/scalped. No driving range and no off course amenities. All around terrible course for the money. Unacceptable that this course can charge 40 for a round, when Hunting Hawk is right up the road and 3X as nice for the same price. Will never return to Belmont. What an absolute waste of money.
I don't see how this course has a 4-star rating on Golf Advisor. First off, Belmont does not have any practice facilities. No driving range, no chipping green, just a bland putting green next to the first hole. The course is in mediocre shape at best. The bunkers are a big problem for this course. Do not be surprised to find club-head sized rocks in the bunkers. I have seen them many times. The greens are bumpy and do not run true. The overall layout of the course is nothing to write home about. It's relatively flat and straight forward. Finally, the service at this course. I finished the 9th hole and walked up to their "halfway house". There was no one working it. So, I had to wait another couple of hours to get food and when I walked into the "clubhouse" their only employee was smoking a cigarette right outside of her establishment. I don't know about you, but I don;t want someone who just smoked a Cigarette making my food. I exited the door, probably for the last time.
Nothing to write home about here , but looking at the absence of reviews on this course , that goes without saying. Course old, and worn. Fairways weak and greens spotty at best. Clientele not your passionate golfing crowd. One player in jeans and by the absence of reviews on golf advisor , not frequented by your weekly golfers. Layout very uninivting. Most courses have a signature hole , one that makes you remember the challenge and uniqueness . Can't think of one hole that stood out, all pretty much the same, straight up and back. No real 19 th hole , no driving range or real practice facility so amenities nonexistent . Weather was great and we enjoyed the day , but don't plan on returning anytime soon.
Fairways & Tees Good, Greens sucked
The course is fairly tight. The tee boxes and the fairways & roughs were in good shape however, golf carts did not have sand bottles to fix divots. The greens, sand traps and fringes were awful. Fringes were mostly weeds. Sand traps were rocks and dirt. The small Greens were a combination of mud and ball mark craters. Apparently players on this course don't believe in fixing their ball marks. A shame because with better Greens this course could have gotten a higher rating.
Well Past It's Glory Days
Belmont is coming up on 100 years old. Thousands and thousands and thousands of people have been chopping the daylight out of it since 1916. Not saying it's threadbare. Just kind of worn out. That said, I can't imagine it being maintained any better. They do pretty good with what is left. And it was re-built by Donald Ross, for crying out loud! It's cheap to play. It's a muni course. It is not a destination course. I was visiting and chose it because Richmond had just got some rain and I wasn't going to pay $50 to play in the mud. Must drain well, because standing water was never a factor. Belmont is relatively flat and an easy walk. TONS of well-maintained bunkers, both in the fairways and around the greens. The consistently wide fairways are okay, as far as grass coverage goes, until you get closer to the greens where in high traffic areas it has been worn away. Oddly, several of the greens have lush fringes. The greens' "trueness" are probably not as bad as I would describe them. (I've been spoiled after recently playing two courses with the best greens ever.) But, there's no denying the the usual bumpy roll, odd turn thing Muni players are used to. No bare or sandy spots though. There is no wow factor at Belmont. There is one sorta cool hole: the first par-3 on the back is elevated from way way up (again on an otherwise flat course) to a bunker protected green. Be advised, the pictures of the hole layouts on the scorecard are inaccurate. One hole claims a creek in front of the green that isn't there. Another fails to report a creek.
Perfect day to play
Ok, first off the weather may have overshadowed the course . 70 degrees , all sun and very little breeze, could not have been more perfect. Played afternoon and to our surprise , by ourselves. The tees were a little soggy at times and the greens were fast , as in very fast. Back nine the greens started to get weak and patchy. To those that have never played this course the front nine and back nine have a totally different personality . Front narrow and short , back wide open and easier. Back little boring with straight up and back , but plenty of sand to help add to the challenge . Almost wish could start on back nine to warm up before tackling the tightness of the front. Overall nice course and great to walk or ride .
Loved it. Can hardly wait to play again. Short but challenging with small greens. Greens were fast and true. Highly recommend.
Crowded, Forced 4-some
I have played this course many, many times and I am always disappointed when a inflexible starter forces a 2-some to play with two single walkers who don't know each other. Golf is my time to relax and spend time with my friends and I pay good money to do it. When a starter makes you start 15 minutes prior to your tee time with 2 strangers who don't even know each other either, and who are walking, not riding, it really dampens your experience. We had ample time to start later, but the staff was inflexible. So much for having a good time...
This course has a tradition of greatness.
Belmont is a great course and well maintained. It is challenging despite it's relatively short length.
This course is a GREAT value!
Although some of the greens had some rough patches, we have seen this at numerous courses this summer because of the abnormal amounts of rain we have had. Overall, the course was in very good condition, and we played in 3 1/2 hours. Some of the green-side bunkers needed sand, i.e. #11.
Fun course for being county owned!
Tee time was flexible. Pace of play was good! Other people out there learning to golf midweek! Would recommend to beginners midweek.
Single golfers will notice a decidedly unfavorable policies towards them. Most singles expect to be paired; however, try to register a tee time now.
Single golfers will notice that new management policies will deter those who would like to play the course. I must add the course is in the best shape ever. I personally experienced this myself. I expect to, and should be paired when the course is busy (and even when it's not). But, I e come to realize that it's new mg t's desire to discourage single Greta. Try to register a tee time as a single golfer. Remember, this is a municipal course, not private so there should be some accommodations for tax paying reside t's who like golf but doesn't have a foursome to play.
Would love to play Belmont again!
The Belmont is a nicely maintained course, with a few tricky tee shots. The water that ran along several fairways was fun.... The fairways and tees boxes were great, the greens a bit bumpy.
well laid out course
good course for the money good play for any golfer
Great Course for $$
Great course. challenging enough to not get bored, but still fun to play.
Fun course, great greens
Grabbed the "hot deal" for a Saturday and played with my son we paired up with another golfer and had a great time. The course was in great shape, especially the greens. We were playing steady through the front 9 and then were waiting every hole on the back 9 due to a foursome 4 groups ahead of us. They were playing extremely slow. There is a nice snack bar on the course. I liked that set up and the food. The girl at the snack bar was super friendly. Overall a good experience. Look forward to playing here again.
Love the greens
Had a great time. Challenging course. Love the greens!
Greens had been aerated, and were bumpy, making putting much too difficult.
good bang for the buck, especially w/golf now
great fairway conditions, tough greens, pleasure to play
