South Riding Golf Club
About
South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

A chilly day at South Riding
Winter golf is always a challenge. But we endured and had a good time. I can only imagine how nice this course is in the summer. Only complaint was the driving range wasn't opened. Our group showed up early to warm up on the range only to find out it was closed. The staff allowed us tee off early so we weren't waiting around for an hour. A big plus! We used military tee times to book and saved 15%.
Mark tee boxes
I thought the staff was very friendly, and the course was in good shape. Unfortunately, none of the tee boxes were marked with any type of marking, indicating which tees were which tees so we had to get up and drive to each tee box to see if we were playing from the right tees boxes that we were on the club level tees so we were driving backward and forward on a lot of holes because we were guessing. Please put out some markers to assist with this.
Course is not worth the money
Decent course, but conditions were not great. Freshly punched greens
Nice Course
Granted we got 2 inches of water 2 days ago and the course was very wet and soppy. Still wasn’t too bad. Would play again
Not as bad as some of the recent reviews.
I think South Riding is getting a bad rep lately for one main reason - value. The course has held up about as well as most of the NoVa courses over the last couple of years. Yes the tee boxes are chewed up and there are some holes that have some fairway mess but those are common problems that really don't interfere with a normal round. If your ball happens to settle in a bare spot down the middle of the fairway MOVE IT! We aren't playing on pro tournament conditions anyway. The layout of the course is very enjoyable and I rank it among the top five or six layouts in the area for average golfers. The problem is price. Even with the generous GolfNow deals this course is up there with the pricier courses in the area and unfortunately there are courses around that offer the same experience for $10 to $20 less. So I only play South Riding when I can use rewards.
Still a Northern VA gem
Enjoyed a great round on a pretty Nov morning
- conditions superb
was a little wet - so driving range was closed and it was Cart Path Only as expected
Staff was friendly and got our group started a little early.
Will be back when I visit VA again
Terrible course for the money
No way you should olay this course for the money. Tee boxes and fairways/approaches all are under maintenance but they still charge full freight for the terrible experience.
Not Very Good
Sad to say, but this course was in terrible condition! Tee Boxes we’re either sand or crabgrass (with. A bit of decent grass). Tons of bare patches in the Fairways. Really chewed up areas at The approaches to greens- couldn’t tell if it was animal damage or arifiiatcon efforts?? At least the Greens were in pretty good shape!
Used to be good, very disappointing now
I’ve played SR numerous times over the years, but probably not for the last 2-3. I was very disappointed to see the condition of the course. The tee boxes were a nightmare. Mostly sand, little sparse crabgrass-like patches here and there. The fairways were often in the same condition, but with dried mud in place of the sand. Had to roll the ball to give yourself a grassy lie. Pace of play wasn’t an issue but it was mid-day on a Monday in October, so I wouldn’t expect an issue. Only saw the check-in guy in the clubhouse and a starter, so not much staff interaction, but that’s not a negative given the light crowd at the course.
For $65-70 per player it was really very disappointing.
This course has let itself go
So, for $94 you'd think you're getting at least a fair to middlin' course, in good to decent shape for early September. No. The tee boxes were basically dirt and crab grass. The fairways were totally chewed up - not just by divots, but they also had huge gaps of grass. The greens were scabbed in places, and no one has replaced any ball marks on the green. I must've fixed at least 20. I was frankly shocked, as I'd played it 2 years ago, and it was nice. It's a pretty easy course, no elevation to speak of. Will not play it again due to the conditions and the uninteresting layout.
Terrible, terrible, terrible
Oh my, this place is a mess, a terrible mess. Tees and fairways dead or filled with crab grass. Greens were long and hairy. What a disaster and what a waste.
Tee box condition was terrible. Would not recommended at this price.
