Awesome layout
I played this course twice in one week. The second time I showed up as a single on Sunday morning (Father's Day) and they worked me in. The layout here is awesome. There is a great variety here. Have to think about your tee shots, but still a few grip it and rip it holes. Greens are rocking and rolling. Super fun and challenging course without beating me up too bad. Plus, it's a First Tee facility so it's all for a good cause. If I was a local I would definitely buy a membership here.
Great play even with freshly airriated greens
The course plays very well and can be downright difficult if you play an errant shot into the wastes or the high grass. Tee boxes were in great shape, however the greens were just airriated last week (I played March 12, 2017) but are still playable, and definitely a birdie is capable if you get your approach shot to with 10. Greens should be at their best within a month or so.
Fine course on a great February day
This is a Pete Dye course, pretty flat, lots of waste areas and water. To me, it's a lot of fun to play, even when I'm not playing well. I was playing pretty poorly this time; the winter rust had worked itself deep, but I had a wonderful time. The weather was perfect -- low 80's, sunny. The course was in fine shape, well tended, except for a few thin bunkers and a couple soggy fairways, but that's really good for February. This course has a nice clubhouse and good practice facilities as well. Electric carts.
A Challenge
This course provides a challenge to anyone regardless of tee box. Layout is not easy on the eye and par 5s are quite long. Several blind shots to the green over hills if not in the fairway. Several waste bunkers. This course will get windy. I should play better during the regular season once landmarks can be better appreciated. Course does not drain well so be prepared for cartpath only in inclement weather.
VB National
A very well conditioned course with an interesting layout. Greens were very fast, almost to fast for the windy weather. One of the best courses around.
Great course
Very good condition and challenging.
Wet, but great shape
I played as a single in the afternoon and completed my round in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
The course was still recovering from flooding the week before when they recorded 16 inches of rain. It was cart path only and two holes were closed due to the rain, but was in decent shap otherwise. A few traps were still under water.
1st time playing course
I'm a 12 handicap 68 y/o playing this course for 1st time. All staff extremely helpful, courteous and welcoming! Course conditions excellent. Greens rolled true and somewhat fast. Can score well if stay in fairway. Rough is deceivingly punishing, at least an extra club, sometimes 2. Overall a fun course not as tricked up as a Pete Dye track can be (thanks to Curtis Strange I suspect). Will play again given opportunity!
Fun course, friendly staff
2nd time playing VBN and another fun day. My one issue with the course is the huge ballmarks all over the greens....fairways excellent, rough brutal, layout is very fun (except maybe the 11th hole)....a special treat is you are almost certain to see one of three bald eagles on the back nine
Great staff!
I was impressed with the young man getting my cart for me and the starter giving us some great info about the course play. The beer cart girl was friendly too and on time. Sometimes the staff really makes the difference.
Will definitely play again if the rates are available on Golf Now. I try to keep my greens fees in the 30 to 40 range.
Thanks VB National!
Overall Play
Great course, speed of play slowed due to wet conditions 90 degree could have been implemented.
Va beach bargain
Wow. If you are. A golfer go for va beach national hot buy. Great deal. Previous TPC stadium course design. Great bang for the buck
Great value
Came earlier than tee time. No problem getting out early. Started as single hooked up with 2 other singles. Pace was excellent, 3.5 hours. Course in good shape. Fairways good. Greens hard and fast. Tricky layout. I Don't think they understand the concept of straight. Everything around a bend. Lots of moguls and tough Bermuda grass. Fun day, super hot weather, but would love to play again. .driving range was a welcome site. Great staff.
Waste Bunkering gone
The only negative thing I would say about course is all the great waste Bunkering that Pete Dye put in is gone. They grew thin fescue grass in all those areas and it takes away The visual Tightness that Dye is famous for off the tee. Otherwise it's still a very nice Course
This is a great place to play !!!
After reading some reviews I thought that this course was struggling, but that is so far from the truth. The course was in terrific shape from tee to green. If you've ever played a Pete Dye layout then you know what you're getting. Risk reward shots, visually intimidating at times and always giving you a good fair chance for a par. I loved the layout and will play this course when in the Virginia Beach area. Large practice putting green. A well designed chipping green and grass teeing area on the driving range. If you're looking for a beautiful place to play you will enjoy VB National !!!!
Virginia Beach National
overall a very good course. It was very nice, just not as "pristine" as I expected it to be.
Play somewhere else
The fairways were not in the best shape. By the fifth hole I was stuck behind a seven some and had to call clubhouse to try to get a marshal to resolve the pace of play issue. Noting was resolved by the staff, I was lucky they stopped at the turn. For the money play Calhoun plantation by far the best course in area and it is same price.
Poor/no maintenance
Great design but the course was in very poor condition.
