Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

Favorite course in VA beach Area
This is my favorite course in the VA beach area, even though it does need some work on certain holes / putting greens. I shot my best at this course as a high handicap player (89) and I enjoyed the nature scenery it has. You'll occasionally see some deer and turkeys on the course which I thought was really cool. No houses/homes/cars in sight on this course which is a plus IMO.
They have a full driving range, chipping and putting area. The club house has all the food and drinks you need to keep you going.
Once the course is in better condition, I believe it has the potential to be PGA level and rival Red Wing Lake Golf Course.
Still going strong
When this course is not flooded, as this was the case today, I recommend playing. Greens were slow in the morning but by 11 am, they were a little faster. Fortunately the water containers were full and the water was cold. The heat & humidity was in full force by 10 am. The staff was very accommodating especially when I made a snafu in scheduling a tee time. Instead of scheduling for a foursome I did a single. My other partners were already at the clubhouse and their names were not listed. Lucky for us and me in particular we were squeezed in
Course is just okay
Course is in just OK condition at best. Large dirt and dead spots on the greens/fairways/tee boxes. Greens roll painfully slow. Course layout is good and fun to play though. Most of the grass in the tee boxes were so long it was equivalent to hitting out of the rough which is definitely not optimal.
Nice course
Very nice Course but very slow play probably due to holiday. Will definitely go back.
Great Course Slow Pace
Played this course with some buddies on a trip to VA Beach. The greens were well maintained and course was in good shape. The only bad thing I can say about the course was the 5-hour round. We were scheduled to tee off at 9:55, which when we arrived got notified that a group of older gentleman typically tee off between 9:55-10. This slowed down the pace of play and was stuck behind the gentleman the whole time. Waited on tee boxes for 10-15+ min.
Wide open fairways
This is a fun course with a good layout. The staff is always super friendly. Unfortunately the greens need some attention in places but it’s still a fun experience.
Drainage Please
Great Course to play a round with friends or to warmup for the season, however, the drainage system needs a lot of work there. Car path is extremely difficult when navigating through lakes in mid fairway.
Rode Hard and Put up Wet!
I usually don't hit this hard on a review, but they charged more than Honey Bee, and another nearby course, so I expected more and booked a couple friends, who feel this way as well.
Everything that was connected to the earth on this course, i.e. sand traps, greens, Tees, fairways ,as well as the rough! Was in worn out condition.
I do realize we had winter and rains, but I have played all other courses in the NC/Chesapeake area and this was the worst.
Now I played this before and don't remember it being like this. It will take months for these conditions to improve, and I will try again then.
It was a great layout and was challenging,
Disappointing - Very Disappointing
I am going to preface this review by saying that I wouldn't normally complain about the state of a course during the winter season. Wouldn't NORMALLY, but for the condition of the two sister courses being so much better.
Greens are sandy, like they just filmed a Baywatch reunion.
Fairways are bald in places and in clear need of repair, but left ignored.. I am not talking about patches as a result of divots, I am talking about large areas caused by neglect.
This course provides a great challenge to golfers, and it set in a beautiful wetlands/parkland but delivers very poorly on its potential.
I have never regretted a round of golf, but after this one I regretted not going to Honey Bee or Chesapeake instead.
I will say though that the fella who was the starter was absolutely first class!!!
