Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

Gorgeous view of Stumpy Lake Photo submitted by Realestateangels on 11/06/2014
There is a reason tee times are always available
The tee boxes are uneven and the greens are as rough as a gravel road. You can literally watch your ball bounce going to the hole. I realize it’s only the end of February, but there is no excuse for the course condition. The price should reflex if they are going to continue at their current rate.
Love this course
Great layout couldn't ask for better staff service recommend this course to everyone
Tee boxes are not level
Tee boxes are not level and mostly dirt. Also very hard to get a tee in the ground.
Ehhhh
Let’s put it this way, I wouldn’t put “Greens Keeper at Stumpy Lake Golf Course” on my resume and expect any callbacks.
Course was a wreck. Greens with weird patch attempts.
Staff was nice and got paired with a good group. The course was just lacking. Spend $60 and just play Honey Bee.
Stumpy
I appreciated the nice staff and great environment greens were a little tore up in some areas but it’s hard to maintain courses in Virginia Beach weather so it could’ve been just the timing I went was wrong and they were having a bad month
Great place to play for the money
Pace of play was amazing, staff were great, and the course was in decent shape
Great Value
Cool public course. Not good after rainy periods. This course sits low so better when it hasn't rained for a few days. The back nine is tougher than the front. Fairways are wide.
SLOW PLAY
Tee times only 7 minutes apart is ridiculous. If you don't tee off very early, then you will be getting started late. Then 5 hours to play ruins the day. Will not be back.
Slow play
At least 5 hours to play. Tee times only 7 minutes apart, contributes to slow play. Also, should not say that 4.5 hrs. is the expected time to play. Golf should be played in 4 hrs or less. DON'T GIVE THEM AN EXCUSE TO BE SLOW !!!
Not the best course
I played the front 9 of this course a couple of years ago and it was in decent shape then, but today was a rough play. I had several of my drives in the fairway and when I went to hit my 2nd shot I hit it clean with my irons but the ground was so hard it either caused me to be shorter than usual or even mishit. The place of play was also terrible, actually one of the worse ones I have come across. I only had 3.5 hours to play and wasn’t expecting to get the full 18 in but it took just over 2.5 hours to complete the front 9. I would not recommend to anyone for future play even if this cost $45 to play.
It could be good if you’re lucky
I’m not sure where to start. The course was very peaceful and quite enjoyable to be on. But there was a line to tee off. By the time I got to start there were two groups behind me. By the second hole there were three on the first and a group of three and another of four ahead of me on the second. It ended up being a line of waiting to take each individual shot with 2-3 groups on each hole at a time. The back nine also looked busy. I ended up quitting after 9 hole’s because it had been three hours and I had already skipped hole 4 to try and gain some time. If you’re lucky enough to go here when no one else is you’ll probably enjoy it but it’s overall a really dissatisfying game to have to wait constantly for the people ahead of you and worry about the people behind you. If you’re good enough to play quickly enjoy it I guess but the staff allows multiple groups per tee time.
Don't play here
For the premium price, the course should have been in better shape. The front nine played slow. On the ninth hole, the owner told us us we had to speed up because we were holding up the whole couse and there were 2 empty holes in front of us. We skipped the ninth and went on to the tenth. When we got there we were the fourth foursome on the hole. This made my playing partners very angry at the owner and ruined their round. The course was overbooked to say the least. When we got finished there were about 15 players waiting for carts. I don't need this BS on a course. I won't go back!
