Legion Memorial Golf Course

To whom it may concern:

It is with a heavy heart that I am forced to recount this most unfortunate experience that I and the rest of my group (and no doubt a number of the other players and groups behind us) had (or were affected by) during the round we played in the later afternoon of Friday, July 24th, at your course, Legion Memorial.

Prior to this writing, I have always considered Legion to be my home course, proudly wearing my Legion ballmarker cap from Maui to Cabo and dozens of courses in between for many years now. Being a lifelong resident of Everett, I have always preferred it to Walter Hall, the other cross town Muni I hold near and dear to my heart.

I had booked a 5:00 pm tee time online using the "Dynamic Pricing" tool on the Premier website (which is another grievance in and of itself . . . ) with the most sincere hopes being able to complete a reasonably paced round by sundown which, given the weather conditions, was completely doable - provided that there would be sufficient player/course management in front of us. I had just completed a grueling 12 hour shift at the local airplane factory turning wrenches and banging rivets and was looking forward to a well deserved respite playing the greatest game in the world at one of my favorite places, Legion.

This is where things went very wrong.

When we were met on the tee box in anticipation of our scheduled tee time, we were informed that there were two groups in front of us that still had yet to tee off. With no real explanation provided, we eventually teed off, almost 15 minutes late. By the time we got to the par 3 4th hole, we had been held up at every tee box and there were two full groups waiting to tee off as we approached. We realized, at that point, that the group directly in front of us from before had played through and that the group hanging out on the tee box holding us up now had 2 very young girls running in and out of the woods and playing "driving" on the golf carts apparently with their dad(s?). By now, we are nearly an hour into the original tee time of our round and have played only 3 holes. Eventually, as we and another group behind us coming off the green at the 3rd were watching and waiting, a woman (presumably the mother?) emerged from the woods and joined this group now in front of us to bring the total party to 7 people. One of the members of my group was finally compelled to call the clubhouse to find out what the heck was going on with this apparent family reunion. By now a 3rd group is coming off the green behind us and as we are about to tee off, the young man from the clubhouse drives up to meet us. He and I begin to have a dialogue about what is happening and course management and suddenly a little man with a big mouth storms out of the tree line between the 4th and the 5th hollering about his family's right to assemble on the golf course because as he put it - "he golfs there all the time and is friends with the pro, Rex." He approached us and incited a confrontation which was completely inappropriate and uncalled for. I attempted to defuse the situation while trying not to feel too verbally abused by this absurdly confrontational character and as he eventually turned back to rejoin his group, he continued to throw verbal jabs at us challenging our playing proficiency, etc - basically talking s#*t. I indicated to the young clubhouse fellow that I was very displeased with this whole unfortunate turn of events and that I would probably be leaving at the turn and seeking a refund for the portion of the round that we now realized was in no way going to be completed. A couple of my colleagues considered leaving at that point but were persuaded to continue by the time we got off the green. Of course, on the next tee box, we had the distinct pleasure of reconnecting with our new friend who introduced himself as Shawn, (minus the family now, the custodial handoff having been completed . . .) who then re-approached us to apparently make amends I guess(?) as "his buddy" Rex looked on. Rex had joined the assembly, I believe, in an effort to sort things out and I was hopeful that things would be better as a result. Once again, in an attempt to take the high road and move past this shitshow that had regrettably played out, I even agreed to shake the guy's hand which I felt was inappropriate at the time and wished I had not done afterward, social distancing and all. This was not what we came out for. Incredibly, as we were about to tee off on that hole, the 5th, somebody form the par 3 prior hooked one so hard that the ball dropped, silently, right in the middle of us on the fly. Luckily, none of us were struck.

The pace did eventually pick up and after a 2 AND A HALF HOUR front 9, we decided to attempt to play out the full round that we had paid for, but not before another misguided twosome tried to bypass us on the par 3 12th and we had to correct their intentions and send them back. What the heck is going on out there?!? It almost seemed like a fitting end when we eventually attempted to approach the green on the 18th in near darkness and got blasted by the sprinklers. What a day . . .

FINAL NOTE: I had to write this report of our experiences for my own piece of mind because this entire episode has really troubled me since then, it's been 2 days as of this writing. I feel like my beloved home course (where I have played for more than 3 decades) has been irrevocably altered for me. And that really sucks. I'm not sure if and when I or my friends (all locals) will be back - obviously there are many other options for us to spend our hard earned cash on.

I guess it's time to get a new hat . . .

Fun new layout! They basically swapped the front and back 9's and added a very cool par 3. Fairways were great, greens were excellent. Flow was very smooth. Covid-19 conscious.

The tee boxes were really furry which is livable, but the 2nd cut was unrelenting. We were losing balls just off the fairway all day. Ankle-high grass and clumps ate them up! Even a little right on one of the par 3's cost me a ball. The starter did warn us of this, but we didn't think it would be that bad. It's been a few weeks now so hopefully its better. Cool place, great location.

Loved the fact that they changed the original back nine to the front. As a senior golfer walking the course having the hilly part of the course on the front is easier on the old legs. Also, the larger water hazards add more challenges. The course drains well in the winter months, but doesn’t really dry out during the summer. For the amateur golfer Legion Memorial is a great place to play!

This is just a great Municipal golf course. Good price, staff is always friendly, restaurant is nothing special but does have pretty good food. For a muni course it is always in good shape and considering the rainy Pacific Northwest the course drains well and is always playable. New design that makes the course playable for guys like me(17 handicap) and enjoyable for guys like my sone(low single digit).

This is the first time we ply after the remodel and I was expecting to see a course in much better condition.
On some holes there are multiple different types of grass on the greens.
The new greens putt slower so no consistency across the course.

Then add the course is over over played.
Management needs to remind people to fix their divots, absolutely horrible.

Legion has always been one of the best municipal golf courses in the north Puget Sound region. Winter time play can be wet, as with most courses in the area, but the course really shines in the summer when the turf is harder and the greens run out. Many of the greens have great movement and the greens staff keeps the green speeds at the appropriate level for how much movement some of the greens offer. Also, the redesign of the 3 holes has been for the better as the new hole 13 is an interesting short par-4. If you're in the Seattle-Everett area looking for good-affordable golf, Legion Memorial is your best bet.

Holes to note include 2, 3, 6, 8, 13 (new), 15, 17, 18

A friend of mine wanted to play golf and I expected to be playing winter rules. But this wasn't the case, only lost 3 golf balls. One ball was plugged.

This course was fairly dry even though it had been raining the last few days, there were no lakes in the middle of the course and the fairways were firm enough to wear golf shoes (I was expecting to wear rain boots). Wasn't muddy either

Think I will play here more often.

It's about time I review Legion Golf Course...

First, I have played Legion Memorial so many times I truly couldn't accurately even guess how many times I've played it.

The Course:
Legion Memorial Golf Course is in Everett Washington and it's simply the driest course in Snohomish County. The greens are always amazing and the Fairways even allow the ball to bounce even after a heavy rain. In the winter, the ruff is wet and slightly muddy although very playable. I mean really, it's a golf course in Washington State and between December and February - you won't be disappointed. However, you would/will be surprised and amazed with the consistent playability. Legion Memorial Golf Course isn't really a Secret to the locals and won't be to you either once you've experience it. At this point I'm mostly targeting the golfers in the surrounding greater Seattle area with this post. This course is wide open with and surprisingly challenging especially depending upon which tee boxes you choose to test you're talents from. On a 1 to 10... It's a solid year round 9. Especially in the Summer when everything is bouncing and rolling perfectly when it peaks to be an honest 10. The more I play there, the more I want to play there...

The Service & Staff:
I'm a picky guy. I expect good old fashioned service from every business I visit and usually am seriously disappointed. The consistency of outstanding service at Legion Memorial that I and everyone I know who plays this course presently are eager to return to simply because the service is so much better than any other course around. A close second to Legion Memorial is The Golf Club at Newcastle while that course is $150 to play a single round so the service should be top shelf. I truly believe the Staff at Legion Memorial sets the standards for all other golf courses to follow. If I had a golf course in the area, I'd try to snap up every employee at Legion Memorial that I could and pay them double. When you arrive at the Pro Shop, they are eager to help, care and are happy that you are there to play their course. The employees treat you as a friend and want you to be happy. The marshals actually take care of anything and everything. If you are part of a slow play group... You are on notice in the friendliest way possible. The marshals joke and keep close track of you as an individual within your group. You are taken care of.

The Restaurant:
Okay, it's a municipal golf course... The restaurant is way above average. The breakfasts are solid and the Hamburgers are really good with lots of French fries. What do you want...? It's way above average. The people in the kitchen are on top of it. It doesn't surprise me that they are always busy. The food is a very good value. The jam is really good and seems to be homemade and is a must for the toast.

Overview:
This course is managed by a company named Premier. Premier offers free memberships that provides discounts then they provide even larger discounts the more you play any of their courses that they manage - a good value. I've been to several other courses and understand that the Golf business is tuff. Of all of the Premier properties, Legion Memorial is the one outshines them all. The Staff should easily get a salary increase because of the consistent quality of service, quality of playability and Value. Walter Hall is the other golf course in Everett Washington that is managed by Premier. They do a great job as well although, as i said - Legion sets the standards...

Do yourself a favor... Drive past Jackson, Jefferson, Bellevue, Snohomish, Kayak and Willows Run... You'll be glad you did. Welcome to you're new go to Golf Course destination...

I play to a +3 handicap and am 55 year old male. Even I find this course challenging even though it is an open course to play. SO, Go... Spend Part of the Day. You'll be Happy you Did.
