The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie - The Woodlands
About
Located just a few minutes north of Olympia, the Golf Club at Hawk's Prairie is one of the South Sound's most popular golf destinations. The club has two 18-hole courses, each with a completely different layout. You can choose between the classic Scottish design of the Links Course or the Woodlands Course with its idyllic landscape of dense, old growth forest. The Woodlands is what you would expect from a Pacific Northwest golf course, with sprawling fairways that snake through towering trees and large, multi-tiered greens. Ponds and wetlands come into play throughout and there are strategically placed bunkers protecting most of the greens. In addition to offering both a challenging and scenic round, the course was also ranked as one of the Top 75 Most Affordable Golf Courses by Golf Digest.

where'd the golf course go
After arriving early they let me go out early. Played 6 holes is about 50 minutes before catching up to anyone. Ended up being 3 and a half after catching the end of a shotgun tourney. Tree lined fairways and a few narrow greens that were in good condition. The last time I played the course there were no homes or streets. That is major complaint. And having driven 60 miles to get to the course was hoping to get away from city streets. Also makes it tougher to walk. Long way from green to next tee on at least 4 holes
Perfect round of golf
Staff is super friendly... Marshals are great and super nice ... Pace of play is awesome fairways and greens are perfect ... What more can you ask for
Nice course
Had a great day of golf. Only down fall was no food court.
Great Track
Course will be great in May and the coming summer.........greens still bumpy from aeration but we're still very good...........pace of play was 3 hours and 25 minutes for 18 with a cart on a nice Saturday so that was awesome..............staff was great and friendly..........for 35 dollars the woodlands was a steal I love this course............it's a must play challenging championship course
Great walking course
This course is very beautiful and a great course to walk. There is a lot of distance between holes but for the most part flat, so great exercise for those looking for that. This course apparently doesn't drain well because it had rained hard the night before we played and there were a lot of very wet areas in the fairways. The greens were in excellent condition though. One hole had a double waterfall that wasn't in operation. Too bad because it looked pretty cool. I would recommend this course and would play it again.
Very Nice Course!
I really like this course. The greens and fairway were in perfect shape and there were only a few groups playing on a Wednesday afternoon - 3:00. Pro-shop employees are very friendly and helpful.
Enjoyable
We played on a Monday and played both courses. We paid $65 to play both courses with a cart through golfnow. Pace of play wasn't an issue, we cruised right along. With the 90 degree rule in effect it saved us a lot of time, although there a number of soft spots where if you were to hit your ball there, I'd be in the ground. The rough obviously hadn't been cut in awhile cause it was long. The greens on Woodlands have recovered nicely from punched about a month ago and putted quite nicely. The course itself is very picturesque and poses a number of challenges, a couple forced carries and large sloped greens. The course needs to dry out some more, and needs to be mowed, but still very fun and playable. I'll definitely return.
Woodlands at Hawks Praire
Excellent scenic course providing quite a bit of challenge. Love playing there. the facilities are great.
Good course, nice facility
The course played ok however they just opened it about 3 weeks ago. The links is the course to play this time of year however.
Everyone at the course is wonderful other than the guy in the club house with super short hair. Didn't get his name but I play the links 3-4 times a week and bought a Okie card so I will catch his name. He is by far the worse personality, grumpy and down right rude every time we go in there. Enough is enough with this guy. GRUMPY he is.
Great Course, a bit wet and hard walk
Really enjoyed the course. A bit of a walk from Green to Tee though - not for the faint of heart. I played in March and the course is still a bit wet, should be excellent once the weather dries it out a bit.
Not what I expected.
Fairways were open for the most part. Greens were in excellent shape. Rough around the greens and tee boxes needed attention.
Course wa in bad condition and extremely slow weekend play
Either their sprinklers don't work or they didn't care. The fairways were mess. This made The course much more challenging than necessary as your strong tee shots were not always rewarded with good lies. Pace of play was awful as there was a tournament ahead of us. Wouldn't come here again, especially not on a weekend.
Could have been better
We were set to tee off a little after 2 but the marshall informed us at the first tee that we needed to tee off from 10 then play the front nine second due to a league that was going on. We then were told after we were under way that at 4 there was another large group teeing off at and were going to have to play the back 9 twice but we would get a rain-check for our round. After we played the back nine twice, we went to the clubhouse to speak with the staff and she told us to write down our e-mails for the rain-check rounds but have yet to see anything from them. Not super friendly staff and apparently not very organized around their tee times. The course is nice but the grass around the greens seemed pretty chewed up with lot's of barren spots and just tufts of grass.
Oki Course?
This was the first time I played Hawks Prairie and while the course was in OK shape, it was not up to the standards I have come to expect from Oki Golf facilities. It was obvious that they have cut back on their watering substantially as the fairways were very dry and fast. Not necessarily a bad thing. The real disappointment was around the greens. The fairways and collars leading up to the greens were very patchy with many places with no grass at all. Additionally, the bunkers were nearly devoid of sand making it very difficult to execute a proper greenside bunker "splash" shot.
Overall, we had a good time and enjoyed our day at Hawks Prairie, but the greenside conditions were certainly not up to my expectations.
Kudos to greens keeper
Outstanding conditions for all 18 greens. Plush, grren, receptive but firm, rolled nicely. Not a ball mark to be seen. Very impressed - country club quality.
Greens fast and true
Played on a cold day, so the course was uncrowded and the pace of play was brisk. Narrow fairways, plenty of hazards. Grass a little thin in places. Tons of ripe berries to pick while you wait to hit!
A Challenging Walk in the Wood(lands)!
I have not played 'The Woodlands' in a couple of years. As such, I did n ot recall select fairway bunkers as well as large (and fast) multi-level greens often surrounded by large bunkers. Further, it was a warm day (Upper 80s) with unabated sun. Bottom line, though, is my playing partner and I enjoyed the 'challenging' walk in the Woodlands. The overall condition was superb. And although we may have been the only walkers on a warm day, it was very enjoyable. Finally, if you do not hit it straight, ensure you have an extra sleeve or 2 of balls.
nice
it's been years since I last played here and there's a lot of new homes being constructed around the course.... Tees=B+ Fairways=B Sand=B rough=B greens=B+ the only complaint was a fivesome that was allowed to play in front of us.
Good course, but not informed of sanding.
Greens were just sanded yesterday morning before we played. Would have been nice to know that before we paid and drove 75 miles to get there.
Would like to do it again when greens are better
Good course, some challenge, good value
Second time out on this course. Good conditions mostly, and some challenge with shot selection on many holes. Seems never to be overcrowded or slow.
