Building for the future
Horn Rapids was sold last year and the new ownership took over during the season. The irrigation system was updated during the late summer. The next step will be the reconditioning of the grass over the whole course with a lot of work required on several greens. I expect that the course will be in really good shape by the end of the year and that next year it will be excellent. In addition the club house restaurant is being updated. Also new electric carts were purchased last year so it is possible to see the effort that is being put in. The new owner wants the course to be the best in the area and I believe it will be but it will take time.
Great value and challenging course
Friendly staff in clubhouse and kitchen.
Course is under new ownership and is improving every time I play it.
Course has a nice challenging layout with no 2 holes being similar.
The course was in excellent condition, BUT the design is poor. There are numerous blind shots that require you to drive forward to see where to go. Not sure if this was the reason for the SLOW pace, but it didn't help. TAKE WATER - they had NO water to drink on the course. And they didn't bother to tell you that before you went out.
I really like this course but not for the traditional reasons. I'm a 6 handicap. I've played Horn Rapids many times in the last two years. I usually play from the back tees. This course get's pretty narrow in places and as such becomes a real challenge to play. 3-4 holes require about a 240 yard carry to reach the fairway. 4-5 greens are very narrow in front requiring extremely accurate irons when the pin is up. I like to play this course as a measure of how well I'm playing. If you spray the ball off the tee, you'll end up in un-maintained sandy conditions that are difficult to recover from. Many tee boxes are at ground level making finding the right aiming point difficult. My biggest complaint is how close the un-maintained areas come to fairways. I have been three paces off the fairway and had unplayable lies. Stay in the fairway. All in all though it is not as well maintained as other courses, it has a great layout and I really like playing this course.
Played this course while on leave, with my Brother In-Law. He got us on for a morning tee time even though there was a tournament going on. Pace of play was perfect. The course is cut out of the desert which was pretty amazing to me and the sagebrush made for some challenging rough. The back 9 had some beautiful views of the Yakima River. Next time I'm in town, I might try and get another round in here.
