An absolute highlight of my vacation
Oglebay is quite a facility. It has all the charm of an exclusive private club, but affordable. The Jones course is "links-style" with rolling fairways, bunkers, large semi-fast greens in distinctly Appalachian surroundings. It does have its challenges, but you can get away with less than your "A" game as long as you keep your ball away from the gorse. A low score can be had if you are on. It is in a protected area, so there are lots of critters to enjoy, especially families of deer. Marvelous round of golf. I will be back with more family in tow.
Winter Golf
This was winter golf. Greens, fairways, and rough in great shape. Bunkers had wash outs. Understandable for winter. Tee markers missing on a few holes. Imagine this course is great when season actually opens.
Winter golf...
Great shape for the first week of Feb. One of my favorite coarses to play.
Professional!
Always a great time @ Oglebay… great facility, professional staff and knowledgeable Pro…. “Shane” Would recommend all three courses to anyone who plays golf…
Rude staff
Clubhouse staff were beyond rude. I witnessed the lady at the front counter speak condescending to 3 groups in a row.
Sloooooooooooow play
Felt like 10 minutes between each shot. It’s a demanding course and some people should not be playing it. Like you should be this tall to ride this ride. Some aren’t tall enough!! Then they have to play from the back tees which I couldn’t understand at all. Every hole one of them would lose a ball and had to look for their ball that went out of bounds like it was the last ball on earth! Sand traps need some work and tees are used a lot and tough to find a good spot on some of the tees. Staff are great and it’s worth golfing there if you can get an early time to get ahead of the slow play.
Unacceptably long wait between holes
Course conditions and the deal I got are the positives from this trip. That said having to wait 20 minutes at each tee box is unacceptable. Either the stagger needs to be longer in between with less tee times or a Marshall is needed. The two groups in front of us had 4 people each and never let my twosome play through. On top of that they played together as 8 on the last four holes. We quit after #16 because we were five hours in at that point. Unacceptable
Great course
The course is in excellent shape. The pro, Dan, was very nice and checked on us at the end of round to make sure we enjoyed it. Great value for the money. The course is difficult but very enjoyable with beautiful scenery.
Summer Condition
In peak summer condition. Greens are fast, the rough is lush and full and the layout is great.
Anniversary round
Went to Oglebay to celebrate our 16th anniversary.
The staff was very friendly. The single, Marsh, we invited up to play along was a pleasure.
The lies on the Jones course were a real challenge. the only hole I didn't care for was #5. Hit my drive to the very top of the fairway only to have role the whole way down to the other side and into the rough. the slope from left to right is extreme. Makes the fairway obsolete.
will play the course again, though.
Looking forward to playing the Palmer next.
