Koshkonong Mounds Country Club
About
Tucked amongst the rolling hills along the eastern shores of its namesake lake, Koshkonong Mounds Country Club pays homage to the Winnebago tribes that are native to the area. Koshkonong is a word from their language that means "these waters we live on." The club was established in 1870 on land that was once known as the country's premier duck hunting destination. The golf course was constructed in 1922 and still stands as Fort Atkinson's only 18-hole layout. The historic Indian effigy mounds were carefully preserved and incorporated into the course as navigational hazards. The golf course is a formidable test in addition to being scenic with plenty of blinds shots in store thanks to the dramatic elevation changes. Golfers should also be prepared for uneven lies. Both distance and accuracy are required for scoring well at Koshkonong Mounds Country Club.

Nice challenge
Course was in good condition for this time of year.
Greens need to be sanded to fill in which they most likely have planned. First hole needs gravel on dirt road
off fairway. Fun to play.
Very Interesting
This was probably one of the hardest courses I've every played. I still had 3 birdies on the day, but I had to earn the pars on the low handicap holes. Course starts out with severe elevation changes till you get on the back nine. There are a lot of blind shots that have to be made. If you have time to drive down the fairway and take a quick look at your landing areas, I would highly recommend it. Especially on #7. I only lost 2 balls, which was pretty good. I'm a 7 HCP and shot a 78. Would definately play the course again. But I would take someone that sprays the ball. Cause you'll be out there a while.
Short but challenging
Nice view of the lake from the 18th green. Found the course the perfect bang for your buck course.
Nice place.
Hard to find. Was well worth it. Would be a tough course to walk.
Koshkonong Mounds
Course fairways were not cut short even. Many spots we couldn't tell fairway from the rough.
Greens in great shape.
The course marshall was loud and interrupted our teeing off with his antics.
Good time
1st time to this course. I had been looking at it for a bout a month and finally pulled the trigger. Great deal off Golf Now. Nice mix of hilly holes and flat terrains. Was expecting faster greens but we were told Tuesdays are a day of rest for the course plus it rained the night before so they were a little on the slower side. They still putted true though from one hole to the next. Great clubhouse and bar area, friendly staff. I will go again.. Nice scenery and nice views of the lake too..
Nice course, good views
Pace of play was slower than I like on the front nine but it picked up to be good on the back.
Course was in good shape, the greens are fast and have movement that is readable and true. Hitting straight is always good but here it can cost you if you don't. Many holes are tight, and there are some blind shots you have to just trust the yardage and hit!
Worth the trip from Madison and will play again.
Fun in Wisconsin
This course was in great shape from tee to green. A nice breeze coming in from the lake made it a pleasant day. It was good to have a cart because it has lots of hills,. The most challenging part was the changes in elevation, uphill and downhill lies, and it messes with my depth perception, not sure I hit the right club.
The staff we very friendly and helpful. Great restroom facilities. There was an outdoor snack building which had good food at reasonable price and fast, friendly service.
Pace of play was fantastic. Of course there were two of us.
Being on vacation and knowing zero about courses in WI, we turned to GolfNow and read reviews. We would play this course again!
tough test
very tough test of golf skills, lots of uphill, downhill, and side hill lies, most greens small and very few straight putts with the pin placements we played, first time playing course was tough not knowing where to try to place shots to avoid the rolling terrain, would like to try her again one day, 3 of the 4 par 3's were pretty tough, long and hilly, the burger and sweet potato fries after golf were OUTSTANDING,
Difficult course but beautiful scenery
The front nine was definitely very challenging. Alot of hills and sloped fairways. The back nine was much easier. The course itself is beautiful. Full of trees and water. Lovely scenery. Bar and kitchen staff could use some work. We tried to call in a lunch order at 11am using the menu on the cart and we were told the cook wasn't in yet but they would put our order in when she got here. When we got to the clubhouse we were told they got our order and she was working on it. We waited quite awhile until the bartender finally asked the cook where our food was and she said "I never got that order." Ended up having to wait another 10 minutes to get our food.Really held us up in getting to our 2nd 9 holes. Probably shouldn't put a menu on the cart saying "call at hole 8 and we'll have your food ready", if you're not going to live up to that promise.
Excellent condition
But the ranger needs to be more diligent in having players keep the pace. Will definitely be back.
A fun course with a couple big hills, especially the final uphill par 5 finishing hole. Aerated greens were still puttable.
This is a fun course to play with a mixture of several easier holes with about 4 or 5 tough holes for the average golfer. There are a couple big hills on the course which adds to the challenge and appeal of the course. The final hole is a memorable straight- uphill par 5. Playing that hole into the wind off of Lake Koshkonong made for a tough finishing hole on the day we played the course. Greens were aerated but still could be putted.
the course has challenging holes
nice course that is well maintained with a nice staff and a well organized staff also
Keep it on the short grass
This course has a number of holes that are on rolling hills. Be ready for the ball placement up hill, down hill and above and below your feet.
A gem on Lake Koshkonong!
Corse layout is tight so be aware when someone yells "Fore"!
Greens are small and fast, but putts run true. Some holes have huge elevation change (11, 18) and ball position is crucial on most holes to score well. A great course when visiting area with family!
Prepare to test your putting skills.
This is a beautiful course, even if you cannot pronounce the name of it. Most fairways are tree-lined with mature trees. The greens are among the fastest you will ever play. And given the slope of every green, it will be hard to avoid a three-putt or two or three. However, that just adds to the challenge of this course. If you are in the Madison or Fort Atkinson area of Wisconsin, don't miss this one.
Balanced course with very challenging holes followed with accessible holes
Yet to score very well on this course because this course requires course management by the golfer. I have a tendency of being aggressive which is not always ideal on this type of course. I like the challenge
This is a well kept secret in Wisconsin!
We've golfed many courses in the Madison area this past year and this course has had by far, some of the best conditions (fairways and greens) that we've seen. I'd highly recommend this course! It's great for all levels and has some challenging holes. Definitely a great deal.
good layout but underfunded
saw good reviews on golfnow and had good price so booked it. based on the previous reviews and course website i was expecting a bit more than i got. greens were supposed to roll ten but could not possibly have been more than 7(i am on a groundscrew at a private country club and i know green speeds), which is good because the greens were far too steep to ever roll 10. fairways were long and shaggy and fresh cups had not even been cut(it was a saturday!) Course layout is great as it has many tall mature trees(course was built in 1924), however they obviously just do not have the money to maintain it at a high level. This is fine i just had higher expectations after reading the reviews and looking at the course website.
lots of mature trees and sloping terrain
This course can be unforgiving and greens are difficult
