Fire Ridge Golf Club
About
Fire Ridge Golf Club in Grafton, Wisconsin is a public course but it boasts the amenities and service of a private country club. It is not as well known as some other courses in the area and might possibly one of the state's best-kept secrets. The golf course stretches to more than 7,000 yards from the tips and was ranked as one of Wisconsin's top 20 toughest courses. Mature trees shape the numerous doglegs and there are also water hazards that come into play throughout Fire Ridge. There is an interesting mix of holes including challenging par 4s, with the most difficult being the 16th. There are no surprises on this tricky hole because it's tough enough on its own. Golfers should aim to keep it in the fairway and place the second shot below the hole, making sure not to miss the green long or else they're be facing a fast downhill chip shot.

Highly enjoyable, excellent conditions.
Found Fire Ridge after doing a random search along a route on our way between Green Bay and Chicago. What a great find. We enjoyed perfect weather and near perfect conditions from tee to green. Every staff member encountered was beyond pleasant. Pace of play was phenomenal. As a twosome we had trouble keeping up with a threesome ahead of us and we finished our round at a very enjoyable 3:45 minutes.
The course layout is genius in use of the natural elevation changes with both down hill and uphill approaches, a few very challenging forced carries. Even if you navigate the fairway you'll have to consider some very thoughtful bunker placement. and pin placement is not something you can ignore. Here, it really matters.
Every hole has a unique look and feel and most were either completely apart or at least felt as if they were isolated from the others. Bunker sand was near perfect. Fringe was perfect. Rough was thick and appropriately challenging without being so thick that we couldn't find our ball as we approached the expected landing area.
Greens conditions were exceptional!
We were at a disadvantage as any first-timer would be without course knowledge but we didn't care a bit. Learning the layout was a joy. Every green has it's extreme and subtle challenges. Greens were fast and tight, and true. I was thrilled to see nearly zero signs of players not repairing their ball marks and they really repaired them well. The course provides the latest single pin ball mark repair tool and you can really see the difference in how the green recovers. My hat is off to the people who play here regularly and take care of their course as all golfer should. Hats off also to the greens keeping and grounds staff who obviously care deeply for the conditions they have achieved. They should be proud.
As an added bonus, the beverage cart attendant was amazing. Really exceptional in every way and appeared to be loving the day as much as we were. If that's not enough, she was incredibly fast around the course. This was very much appreciated on a sunny 85 degree day in May. I honestly don't think any course could ask for better!
Afterward, we enjoyed the pan-roasted walleye and vegetables which we would return for any day, even without a tee time. As with so many other things found at this course, it was just perfect and a great way to cap off a really "great day to be alive" kind of day.
Thank you Fire Ridge for an incredible, all around great, golf experience! We very much looking forward to returning!
Great conditions for a tough weather. In Wisconsin.
Great conditions for a tough weather. In Wisconsin fire Rich still was in excellent condition, greens rolled through, and fairways cut tight.
Fire Ridge course in Grafton Wisc.
My son and I played the course in temps of 40 F and 8 m/hr winds . The greens for this time of year were surprisingly good, as was the whole course. The variety in holes and the well kept course made this a wonderful day of golf. I would recommend this to all types of golfers, and for the price with a power cart, you can't beat. Finally the staff were extremely helpful in all regards.
Great start to Fall golf
Played on a windy day. Course was in really nice condition, improved from when I played in late June. The first tee was running a little behind, but the outstanding clubhouse staff and starter kept us in the loop and got us off smoothly. The course is a solid, fair challenge with native areas ready to punish you if you get too wild. Had a good burger in the restaurant afterward. Good experience!
Disappointed in course conditions
The bunkers were in poor shape and needed maintenance. We hadn't had rain in several days and the bunkers were washed out.
Top notch
This might be the best shape I've seen the golf course since I've been playing it which has been for a very long time. The greens were in professional caliber shape and were rolling about an 11 on the stimpmeter which is just the way we like them. Come see for your self you won't be disappointed trust me on this one.The whole course was in magnificent shape.
Overpriced
Condition of the course was poor to say the least almost every sand trap had standing water in it was unplayable manyi greens had bare spots or debris and weren't groomed very well for what they charge there this should not be the case! it is not a high-end course compared to many in the area a fair price with a card should be in about 30 dollars.
Good But Could Have Been Even Better
I was flying back to Milwaukee from a business trip and thought I'd meet my son for a late afternoon round of golf. Found a solid price on line and booked a round at Fire Ridge. When I arrived the parking lot was full as a major group outing was just finishing. Everything with check in was terrific. My son was new to this course and I hadn't played it for years. That hurt us as there are blind hazards such as on # 10. Also the pin placements often require an approach from a small target area on the greens. For our round the greens were really beat up from the previous outing which made it difficult to get a smooth roll. Overall a good experience but better green conditions and less brutal pin placements would have made it even better.
Course bad shape
The course was in the worst shape I have ever seen it. Lots of standing water, in fact the sprinklers were even on on one hole. The greens were in terrible conditions.
First time and likely last
This was our first time playing this course. We had a late afternoon tee time so we figured it wouldn't be busy...and it wasn't but yet we were crunched off the first 9. I wish I would have asked if we could start on the back 9. Play was terribly slow. Not a fan of how the course was laid out and the red tees were sooo far up past the other tees. Restaurant was great.
Good Time
Greens were in rough shape but otherwise great course.
Very bad experience and even worse sand traps!!!
First, the sand traps are full of rocks and left my 8 iron with a big ding in it! Unreal they would leave these bunkers looking like mount rushmore! Second, the course was over booked and took 5.5 hours to play 18. Thrid, we played hole 7 while the people in front of us were on the green and from 338 out we hit the green from tee and no one said anything to us at that point. Clearly, a 338 drive is not normal and got lucky there so i assumed they understood. Then, on hole 18 where they NEED A BELL!!!! we drove up to see the 3rd guy hitting and drove 175 yards back and figured 5 minutes later the 4th should have shot by then. So, we tee off and hit another beautiful 320 yard drive and here someone yelling. They come charging back yelling because we've drove at them all day which is false! No way should they still have been there at that point. Maybe if they had a bell to ring it would have helped. Then, the old guy decides its ok to steal my ball and throw it in the woods!! no that's not ok at all! We said sorry numerous times and he was having none of it. so, we go in the clubhouse and get yelled at by the clubhouse for shooting at them all day?? if it was all day why did they not say anything until 18??? The guy wouldn't listen to me and blamed us for everything. when i said he stole my ball he laughed. not funny!!!! We have come here a lot even with the bad bunkers because the staff was nice. Today was anything but that. I wanted to talk to the people in front of us but somehow they moved faster than they had all day and were gone already. I was shocked at how we got treated and will never come back to this course again!
Nice course....but needs TLC.
First time playing Fireridge. Very interesting layout. Tough greens that you need to hit certain sections to give yourself a chance. Fair off the tee, pretty much everything right in front of you. Course conditions were average. Bunkers as other reviewer's have mentioned, need some work. Lots of rocks that could be removed fairly easily with some work. It's clear they don't drain properly as their was standing water in many of them. And I think because they don't drain properly, they harden after they eventually do dry, making it seem like there isn't sand in them. I believe the sand is there, its just been compacted so much from lack of drainage.
A few of the greens were a little spotty, but nothing outrageous.
I liked the layout and variation of holes. I wouldn't feel good about paying $70 to play this course. I paid $35 on a Golf Now deal and felt that was fair. It seems like this place is at a crossroads----either lower your green fees to reflect course conditions, or invest in the conditions so it's more like a $70 course.
I would play again for same deal, unless I knew conditions were better.
Great except for the sand traps.
Great golf course but the condition of their sand traps is deplorable... something you would encounter at a inexpensive muni or county course. Very little sand and lots and lots of rocks. Staff is nice, amenities are nice, course is challenging but fair. For what they charge as a daily fee course, I sure hope they attend to this. I'm not the first to make note of it on Golfnow either.
Thank you for your constructive response. It's a shame when players don't fill in ball marks, rake traps, etc.. We'll come back again to see how the course plays under normal conditions.
