Worth the drive
Exploring golf outside the Twin Cities Metro area this summer I made the drive to Spooner for a round of golf. The course is in excellent condition from tee to green. There is a driving range complete with a bunker and chipping green to warm up before the round or get in some or get in some practice.
Definitely worth the drive.
First off as a single I was finished in 2 1/2 hours so I can’t attest to the place of play.
Great Shape
Never get tired playing this little gem. Course is great shape.
A must play course!
Recommend you play this course! Wide selection of tees and challenging for all skill levels! Beautiful pines and fun to play!
great layout, enjoyable round
The course is tough for the average golfer if you can't drive the ball 180- 200 yds. You also need to control the ball, drive it fairly straight to score. The Spooner course is fair and totally enjoyable no matter what level of golf you play. The round was slow but our foursome survived and we would recommend it to all who get a chance to play it.
Fantastic Conditions
The course is in great shape! Tee to green very nice. Greens a bit slow but true and consistant. We followed a 5some and 4some and play was about 3:45 for 18 holes. Nice folks in clubhouse and bar/restaraunt. Great golfing experience. Highly recommend!
great course fun day
We got a great deal on golf now. The course was in excellent shape. It was a Saturday so the course was busy but it was a beautiful day and we finished in under 4 hours. One of the best golf courses in northern Wisconsin!
spooner Golf course
The golf course was excellent. My wife enjoyed the course so much we are playing a second day. I have played all over the US and this course for a public course is excellent. I thanked the staff and manager after our round.
Perfect Day
We got a great price on Golfnow on this wonderful course. We never waited at any hole nor felt hurried.
A perfect day for golf on a wonderful layout.
Great Value
Course is in great shape already. Greens are fast, fairways and tee boxes look good. Lots of short holes to give you options about which club to use off the tee, but trouble to get in to if you don't pick your spots well. Course is worth the money even without a "hot deal" but grab one up if you can.
Enjoyable course to play
Played mid-day with a friend of mine mid-week. Course condition was excellent, great grass in fairways, greens were great as they rolled true with a lot of undulations and slopes. Rough was medium depth but was a small penalty. Course design was mixed, some holes were pretty bland, others more imaginative. Not a long course but ok. Clubhouse was old and a bit worn. Food in the upstairs bar for lunch was not memorable, but beer was cold. Staff was great. Overall, I'd play again.
The course is well laid out.
Fun course to play. Greens are fast but soft. Much better course than I am use to.
Lake country gem
Have had the good fortune to play outstanding courses in many locales. Spooner's home course has country club claiber greens -- well maintained and fast. Overall course condition and design is excellent. Historical connection to Vardon shows. Great set of finishing holes. Highly recommended.
This course is super
Great course in excellent condition and fast greens. The service staff was great.
Best course in the area
The pace of play is always very good. Slower players conscientiously let others play through. The driving range has an excellent area for practicing chipping. All in all, a great golfing experience.
The course in in excellent shape
I really like this golf course. It is well taken care of and well managed.
Well worth the money.
Our 4-some had a great time. Enjoyabe and challenging enough course. Very playable and in great condition. There is a good vareity of tee boxes to choose from so you have some say in how tough you want to make it. Even with the dry summer, course was soft and greens receptive, so they are taking care of the course. Seemed to have just the right pro-shop and bar/grill for the course and location.
Committed to be THE BEST in course conditions, customer service and FUN for people of all ages and abilities.
In response to larsba1942 - Thank you for your words regarding Spooner Golf Club being in your "Top 5" golf courses you've played throughout the country. We truly work hard everyday to earn recommendations such as this and value the strong relationships we have established with golfers in or travelling to Northwest Wisconsin. Respectfully I do feel I need to address a few of the comments in your post that misrepresent the type of facility SGC is and what we stand for.
Being that you are from a neighboring community with a number of golf courses, you are aware that a very high percentage of courses in Wisconsin, the Midwest and almost all in northern Wisconsin were affected by a crazy weather winter. BE ASSURED, Spooner Golf Club IS NOW and will continue to be a course prided on providing the very best course conditions and this year was the first in 8 years where we could not play Summer Rules from the very first day the doors opened for the season in late March or early April.
As for pace of play and course difficulty, our pace of play rating is 4 hours to 4 hours and 15 minutes and routinely we meet this mark on even the very busiest of weekend days. This is due to attention in managing play on the golf course with starters and/or rangers and through the "player friendly" golf course that can still be challenging with the many risk reward opportunities, but with 6 sets of tees and manicured treelines it is rare a ball is lost and play is slowed due to "searching". We are proud to be recognized by the PGA and US Kids Golf as a leader in facilitating Family and Junior Golf and have a golf course that enhances this reputation.
Finally I hope you have an opportunity to come back and enjoy the golf course over the late Summer or absolutely beautiful Fall here at SGC. Thank you for your comments and we will do all we can to make your experience one to earn your "Top 5" recommendation each and every time you join us.
Course needs special attention to the greens.
I have been playing this course off and on for the past 30 years and except for a couple of years under some questionable management several years ago the course has always been on my top 5 list which includes many courses around the country. I have only two minor(?) complaints: Please adhere to the 8 minute between tee-times policy, too many times we will have groups teeing off in less than 2 minute off the 1st tee. It backs up the course from the get-go and we feel pushed all the way through the 18 holes.
. I understand that the course has experienced a hard winter but the greens on some holes have not fully recovered. Spooner is a great course and many people who play it for the first time find it suprisingly fun but also a challenge for a course in NW Wisconsin.
