Template Treasure

You know that feeling you get when you’ve been looking forward to something for a long time and it turns out to be a big letdown? Well, that wasn’t the case at Blue Mound Golf and Country Club. It exceeded my expectations in a big way. You’d think I might even be a little jaded with this being my 103rd round of the year, but the experience was rejuvenating.

The clubhouse is grand enough to fit in on Long Island, but it works just as well in the Midwest. While walking to the first hole, you pass a bust of the architect: an apt start to the day. The tried and true golf holes are always a blast to play. The templates at Blue Mound are no exception to that rule. In fact, some call it one of the purest iterations of the style. It’s definitely a little out of the ordinary in Wisconsin, but it works spectacularly.

The first hole offers a welcoming handshake and introduces you to a theme that repeats throughout the day: the fairways are easy to hit, the greens are bold, and the course allows creativity to run rampant. The fantastic putting surfaces are its defense against par (and they defend it well). In my opinion, it’s golf at its most fun. Any shot you can envision is fair game. I wish there were more places like this.

Blue Mound Country Club is amazing...but dont miss the entrance its hard to find!!

I was very lucky to play such a prestigious course. The amazing Seth Raynor design Blue Mound Country is exactly what you expect when you go to a high end old school country club. The club house was outstanding and the pro shop was awesome with a great selection of things to choose from. The range was great with lots of targets and even high end balls to hit. Putting green was lighting fast just like the greens on the course, the place is top notch everywhere and the people are super nice.

Now to the course, the sign in the locker was great “golf rounds should be played in 3.5 hours or less, if playing poorly play faster”. You know you're in for a good day after that. The first 4 holes play outside edge of the property, this is where you need to make your score or at least preserve it because it's about to get HARD. 1 and 2 are nice straight away par 4s to kind of ease you into the round besides the hard greens and blind bunkers. If you see a knob in the fair way it is a bunker with a little word of advice. The bunkering around the greens are so good and the greens are outstanding with so much undulation words can't even describe it. The guy who got us there said the best part is that no to greens are the same. The semi drivable par 4 6th is a great hole with a bunker guarding the front with a 2 tier green. The 7th is a short par 3 island green surrounded by sand. 8 and 9 are brutes of holes that play back into the wind.
Side note I loved how they ran the fairway on 9 all the way up and along the clubhouse and across to the 10th tee, its a really cool site.

Back nine I thought was a touch easier but that could be after getting my butt kicked by 8 and 9. 11 is a shorter par 4 that you must stay to the right on with a Hybrid or 3 wood. 13 is a long par 3 that you can not be deep on our you are hitting out of the biggest bunker on property. 14-16 are great medium length par 4s that if you find the fairway you have a chance at birdie or par miss the fairway and you're scrambling all over. 18 is a great finishing par 5 back at the clubhouse. Keep your tee shot up the right so you can have a great angle at the hole to reach in 2.

Every green at Blue mound is outstanding and they are so fast. I watched playing partners putt the first hole was shocked they got the ball to the hole with how softly they hit it. If you are coming to Blue mound make sure your chipping and putting is on point...Your gonna need it.

Course in beautiful shape and fairways were excellent.

Greens can be challenging depending on where the pins are set.
