Nice Course Grumpy Marshall
I like this course and it's in good shape. Tried to enjoy a Sunday Game with 5 others in a mini Skins Game. There was 6 of us and we were the only ones out there golfing in the rain with the exception of one other twosome that were at least 5 holes ahead. On hole 4 with no one behind us the Marshall comes pulling up in the rain yelling for us to "break it up!" We tried to reason with him but he wasn't having it. Put a bitter taste in our mouth the rest of the game. No reason to be a rude idiot like that. Will be a while before we ever think to play there again because of that.
New ownership, same course
Nice Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design as follow him a lot. Challenging tee shots with plenty of sand in fairway landing spots and surrounding greens. Greens rolled well and overall the course was in good shape. Hadn't played here in many years. Staff was fine. While not club's fault, our 2 some was paired with another 2 some that did not understand golf etiquette, like hitting 2 balls off tee before everyone else plays and walking to green on par 3 while 2 some still on tee box. Grille room had good food too.
Need to Play!!!!!!
amazing course to play and the staff there are so nice. must go
Course was in good shape but the greens were a little slower than usual. Got done with round at 4:30 and the bar was already closed which was a little disappointing, That seems like it's a little early. Usually when I play the Fox, everything is perfect.
Long, Difficult... Still Fun
The course is in great shape at the moment. Greens are fast and smooth. Fairways are nice and the rough isn't too penal.
That being said... it's a beast of a layout. Most of the front nine is easy to get around. But the back will frustrate even the best golfers. Keeping in mind it's a par 71, choose your tees carefully. In fact, my one recommendation to the course would be to tweak some of the forward tee options.
Bottom line, the course is great. Go play it if you want a challenge.
Course challenging but fun. Good greens. The only problem I had was the lousy attitude of the cart attendants, rude, rude, rude. They obviously hate there job.
Outstanding -- first time out
I live near downtown St. Pete -- thus, was around a 50 minute drive to get there. Well worth it. This has been on my list to play for awhile....the greens were immaculate condition as well as layout with many of them very large, expansive, and with multiple levels. I really appreciated the fairways in great shape and not like the typical Florida 'sandy soil' that makes it easy to chunk the ball every time.
It was very creative layout and fair while also being challenging. The drives were somewhat demanding but not too narrow or unfair. I had just played TPC Tampa at a more costly rate and would put this course better rated across the board --- on par with World Woods. Excellent.
will come back
First time on this challenging course. Outstanding conditions from tee box to green. Lots of long carries so choose your starting tee box with caution. Played a twilight round so pace of play was fast - there weren't many groups ahead. Well worth the green fee. This is a hidden gem because it's not on golfnow. Check out their website. Will be back for sure.
A Decent Test
Fox Holow is a good test of your abilities. There is a mix of short holes and longer holes. Accuracy off the tee is very helpful. If you hit it straight, you can score.
The conditions of the course was average. The greens were very good. The fairways were okay. The bunkers could use some work. It looked like the sand had been watered down and settled. The bunkers could use a good raking. The tees had been overseeded and had plenty of grass on them.
I would recommend buying a yardage book when playing here. Not all hazards are easy to see. The book could save you a few strokes.
While not a top tier course in the Tampa area, this course could be close to a top tier if the maintainence level came up a bit. It's a fun course!
Great course. First time playing and I really enjoyed the layout of each hole. 18th hole was a fun shot over water. The course was very soggy from recent rain but I'll be playing again when time allows.
Nice place.. with a minus or 2
I've been playing here on and off since it opened. Always in great shape overall. Just a tip: play tees for your ability, this isn't a pushover course. Greens are decently large, but firm and putt true. There are a couple of minuses lately however. The pace was a bit slow this time around which I haven't really experienced before. Maybe the snowbirds were trying to cram in an extra round before heading back (weather up north was miserable while down). The other downer was the condition of the bunkers. They seem to have compacted over the last few seasons as well as lost some sand. They LOOK all pristine and white but are nearly impossible to play a proper bunker shot if you wind up in the wrong place. Very inconsistent- they certainly can use a fluffing and some new sand. Other than those little things, it's always a nice place to play and the staff are friendly and helpful.
Played with two of my out of town guests and one other local friend. Had a great time as the course was in great condition. The Fox is The Fox. Beware.... Lots of sand and undulating greens. Always a treat to play there. Staff is friendly and professional and does a great job in managing the tee times once you are on station......
Every bit of the 6800 yards it says on the scorecard
The scorecard says there are black tees further back, but an employee told me they don't even set them up unless they are hosting a tournament for professionals. The 475 yard Par 4 14th is the best example of how the blues offer plenty of length on this golf course. While 14 is wide open for you to hit as much as you can, other lengthy holes feature a more restricted landing area off the tee. The rough is definitely penal, as it grabs your ball and makes the next shot difficult to make good contact. While I wouldn't call this course "scenic" like a Lake Jovita South, there is plenty of contour and hazards on virtually every hole. The greens are on the larger side, making GIRs somewhat meaningless despite the length it requires to accomplish them. Every bunker has plenty of sand and rakes (I know, I hit a rake with my approach on #2 and the ball deflected into the water) and the only thing lacking in the condition of the course were some brown tee boxes...which are somewhat expected in mid-August. I'd play here more often if Fox Hollow was on GolfNow.com and offered Hot Deals, but neither is TPC Tampa Bay and I don't ignore that property either.
This is a great course at a reasonable price
This course isn't on golfnow but the regular rate was more than reasonable. This is a great layout and was in great condition. The greens were set up extremely fast since it was the day of the qualifier for the PGA tournament at Innesbrook. There were many memorable holes and this was my favorite course I played in the area on my golf trip (and we also went to Pine Barren). Lots of water that comes into play with some long par 4s on the back.
I played the Florida mini-tours and was a pro at Saddlebrook Resort from 1996 to 1998. Of all the courses I played during those two wonderful years, Fox Hollow was my favorite.
