Oak Valley back 9 Photo submitted by VICRAZ7 on 12/09/2013
Good condition and nice greens
Just past overseeding so most of front nine was pretty wet with deep rough. Greens good on both sides, and back nine in nice shape.
We would go back.
Invest in some mowers
Courses should not even have tee times avail before sunrise. Why? Because of what happened to us at Oak Valley. 6:20 group was still putting on the green at 6:50! Which means there is 0 chance they teed off at 6:20. When we asked the starter he just said “they play quick you’ll never see them again”. Correct. But now we are starting 10-15 minutes late as the 3rd group off! Not only that but we had a 3some on our tail all morning.
Now to the conditions. This course was closed for a bit I’m assuming for aeration and maintenance. Funny because the first cut of rough was so thick balls were being lost all round. All four of us were searching for our golf ball on #9. These shots are not even OB, they are barely missing the fairway. I get making missing the fairway penal, but this isn’t the US open; cut your rough back!
The kid at the pro shop was half asleep upon checkin and I could barely understand him as he was mumbling. I got attacked by mosquitoes at the makeshift restroom by the driving range. Our group may take this course out of our rotation for a while until they get their act together.
Cut the rough and marsh
Been driving out from LA for years now to golf here and felt like today was the first time it wasnt worth it. I love the layout and spaced out holes but so disappointed in losing balls in the first cut of grass. Not only that you also lose balls that are embedded cause the grass is so soft. You waste so much time looking that it makes the round not fun. We met Greg the GM last rd and he was very courteous, but he needs to advise the maintenance crews to mow down the grass more in the fisrt cut and beyond. Penalizing golfers hitting off the fairway is one thing but making them spend a majority of time looking for balls is ridiculous.
Oak Valley
Course is great and layout is really nice. However, I had a 6:20am Tee Time. When I got to the 10th hole, I was told the back 9 was still not open and I couldn’t play the last 9 holes. When I left and told the staff, rather than reimbursing me, they said “well a 9 hole is $35, so we’ll refund you the difference. Since you paid $55, we’ll refund you $20”
Confused
Ok well let’s start with the check in. The guy was nice but he assigned me to cart 20. I went down only to find it had trash in it. So I walked back up to let him know that it might be someone’s cart. When I went back he had disappeared to the snack area so I addressed it with the other employee. He looked confused and gave me a different cart. So off we went to play golf. We had weird weather that day so I think most people didn’t play. We had the course to ourselves. Now if you want drinks one the turn the snack bar was closed so I suggest you bring your own beverages. We play the back nine and we get approached by someone in the group behind us thst we drove the cart too close to the green. This gentleman says he works there. I doubt it. We had a 150 pm tee time on a muggy day. Why would an employee play at that time. Overall the management must know that things could improve immensely. One last thought the restroom near the clubhouse was filthy. Take pride in your course or sell it to someone who will.
An Under-appreciated Gem
Simply a quality course design and challenge. Though not a "manicured" or resort-type of course, true golfers and students of the game will undoubtedly appreciate this fine track.
Tee boxes and some bunkers could be better. However, the fairways and greens are superb. If you are in the rough, it will cost you a shot, if not, a lost ball! So, hit it straight, long and bring a solid putter. You will be rewarded.
Not worth the money
We’ve lived in the area for a while and have played golf “sparingly”over the years. Recently my sons and I have taken up golf as a bonding hobby. The positives here are the carts have nice seats and have small ice chest to store waters or beers. They even provide ice for you. Snack bar prices were pretty reasonable. Got 2 waters and 2 beers for $12. Negatives are club house seemed like a ghost town. Half of it is blocked off and looks abandoned. We played here mid day on a weekend and didn’t see the cart girl once! The course has some challenging holes but the conditions weren’t great. And honestly for the price to play here, you can go across the freeway to play at Tukwet for a cheaper price and nicer overall facilities.
