Canyon 9 signature hole Photo submitted by RockinDoc on 10/05/2012
It's Alright, Brah
I got to play the Canyon / Ranch 9's at Steele Canyon while in the area for work. The greens were great and certainly the best part of the course in my opinion. They rolled true without bumps and at a nice pace. The fairways were OK. Much of the grass seemed dormant, especially the rough surrounding some of the greens. I'm from the North East so I'm not completely sure how much of that is from the SoCal drought or time of year.
The layout is nice. There are some neat holes with fun elevation changes, but there are one or two head scratchers as well. Some holes felt like bumper bowling with big sloping sides that kick the ball back towards the fairway. I suppose that's good or bad depending on your game. While there was some trouble on the course, it's easy to take it out of play if you are accurate enough to stay on one side of a hole. Overall I thought it was pretty forgiving.
We paid a $69 twilight rate for non-residents. I was happy to get out somewhere on short notice while we are snowed in at home, but it was a little steep. Residents play for about $20 cheaper, and I feel that's the fair price point for this course. I would not pay the $100 plus for a morning tee time.
Amazing course with gorgeous nature canyon setting
Loved my day at this course! Staff was very friendly, played early in the morning and was able to get on solo with my booking and not paired up with another group. Was able to play all 27 holes, Canyon 9 was my favorite, but each 9 has its own unique setting, the Vineyard 9 crosses through a real vineyard that was neat as well. 10/10 would recommend.
Great course
Course was in great shape. Paired up with two guys that were awesome. Great round. The pair is friendly but challenging. I would love to play it again
tough track
Greens were excellent as were the boxes and fairways. I knew going into it that it was a tough track, and that proved to be true. Will still go back for the challenge.
Great early March outing
My wife had an enjoyable 4 hour round on the Canyon/Vineyard nines. Greens and tee boxes in the best shape. Fairways and rough had some thin areas.
Great Track
One of my favorite courses in San Diego. Some spectacular holes with large elevation changes, especially on the Canyon course. Challenging but fair, and tight in spots, so keeping the ball in play is paramount. Pricey unless you can get a Golf Now Hot Deal.
Nice Course, Good Choice
My second time at Steele Canyon, playing the Canyon/Ranch combo both times. Some spectacular holes, especially on the Canyon course. Pretty tight with forced carries, so expect to lose some balls. Fairways are closely cut, so the ball runs out, which can be good or bad, depending on whether you're in the fairway or rough. Overall, one of my favorites in the San Diego area, especially if you can get a Hot Deal.
Course conditions not Great!
I have played several courses in the San Diego area but this time the courses were in very rough shape. I had friends that said to play this course as it was very good. I would play several other courses for less money in the San Diego area before paying the price to play this course again.
I think it is overrated and overpriced to play. The canyon 9 was ok but I didn’t care for the vineyard 9 had several hokey holes.
Great course to play and enjoy the outdoor countryside. Very peaceful to have business conversations.
