Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club
About
Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club is a Johnny Miller co-design that's a short drive from its sister Lakes Course. The two courses will never be mistaken for each other though. Ranch Course is a pumped up course that's big in almost every way. There are over 300 feet of elevation changes and in excess of 100 bunkers around the course.
Miller and his design partner John Harbottle III put together a course that plays as bold and showy as Las Vegas. Only it's located in Carson Valley, halfway in-between the more nature resort towns of Reno and Lake Tahoe.
The bunkering can be severe on Genoa Lakes' Ranch Course and the mountain scenery can be even more striking. Even though it's not far from the Lakes Course, the Ranch Course is definitely set up in its own world.
Miller gives golfers a fighting chance though and often the latitude to decide their own fate. Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes is full of risk-reward holes. Most notable might be No. 18. This 561-yard par 5 gives you not one, but two shots (minimum) where you must decide how much lake you want to try and cut.

Being refreshed
They had a water issue which created problems on fairways and traps. The managers are correcting these issues as quickly as possible. The greens are all in great shape and you can still enjoy a challenging round of golf in an absolutely picturesque setting. Worth every penny.
DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME!
This was the absolute worst golf course I have ever been to in my life, it was a complete waste of money. An employee in the pro shop informed me that they are experiencing issues with the filtration system and that’s why the golf course is dry and the grass is dead. The fairways are in really bad shape, full of weeds and dirt, and each tee box is pretty much dirt with spots of grass here and there. I would rather spend my money elsewhere.
Course has gone down hill, needs a lot of attention. Half the course was dead grass.
Tale of Two Nines
Due to lack of water the front nine is almost unplayable. It has lots of bare spots and hole number four has been taken virtually out of play. The back nine up the mountain is in very nice condition. It is well-maintained and has evidently received plenty of water. Enjoyed playing back nine.
average golfer
The course is a true links course. Enjoyed the layout. I was golfing with my wife and the pace was such that we really enjoyed the time... A few unusual amenities... the white tees are the women's tees - so she gets to brag she played from the white tees.
Also, rounding the 16th hole was a box of slightly used golf balls that you could pick from to replace any balls you lost while golfing... honor system.
The staff was super friendly- the grees were in good shape and the fairways were... well, it was a links course so I didn't expect much.
Very dry but tolerable
Have always enjoyed this course. Unfortunately the course could not sprinkle for two and a half weeks, which caused damage. I am certain the course will recover very shortly. Still had a nice time with my best girl.
Course not in good Shape
Course was in terrible shape - Tee boxes yellow and dead - most of greens had dead patches
Greens Keeper needs to be fired immediately!
Very Disappointed
This used to be one of my favorite courses in the area, and I have been playing golf around here for over 30 years. The course is in horrible shape. Half of the fairways and tee-boxes are dead, and the rest is filled with clover and weeds. The greens are bumpy and uneven and many of the sand traps are unplayable. It looks worse than a bad Muni course. The views are breathtaking. It is such a shame to see that the ownership has forsaken what once was a beautiful facility and great course. They seem to be way more interested in building new homes than in taking care of their course.
Course Needs Help
Due to water issues, many fairways are extremely dry and crusty, a few green are crusty. Course in sad shape st this time. Maybe in 30 days it will be better.
Course has not been well irrigated due to problems with the irrigation system. It is very dry with dead grass in much of the fairways.
Not in good condition
This course was in terrible condition. Some tee boxes were all dead and the fairways were in terrible condition
Course was totally dried out!
Apparently there was a watering problem because the course had very little grass. Quite disappointing and it explained why there were so few people there. We finished play at 3pm and wanted to get a snack and use the restroom, but the clubhouse was CLOSED!
Issue with water pipelines made dry course
Course was in bad shape, very dry but sign on the clubhouse explained issues with watering and irrigation pipes, so it was understandable. Good layout, potential for nice course when the course conditions are better. Staff friendly, newer facilities.
Nice views
Overall I had fun.
The main issues are hard and dry fairways and sandy Tees.
The greens were pretty good.
Awesome views and a nice new safe neighborhood.
The staff were friendly.
You definitely need a golf cart for this course.
The Par 5 4th Tee was converted to a par 3 due to what appeared to be long term fairway repair issues.
Grass is dead
The entire course is dead with the exception of the greens, don’t waste your time or money at the ranch course. I’m not sure if the lake’s course is like this .
They should literally shut the ranch course down ! No joke
Still needs water
Played about a month ago and the greens and fairways were pretty dried out and brown. Not much improvement since then. Rates should. R dropped to reflect course conditions
Ranch course "21
They have had serious irrigation issues and the fairways were brown and crisp. Was told this issue should be getting fixed in near future. Hole #4 was played as a Par 3 instead of a Par 5 because no fairway at all. Wouldn't recommend playing at this time but when this issue is fixed this course has a great layout and great staff. Hoping to go back when it is in better condition!
