Too many silly holes
So, the fairways are large and the greens in good shape and big, but the course has too many holes that are just plain gimmicky. Blind shots, uphills, downhills, false fronts...you had to land your ball in the perfect location in the fairway or on the green on every shot...even though the fairways are large, if you are on the wrong side in some cases you could not even play a shot to the green. One of the holes on the back side (I was too annoyed to care by this point) was a straight downhill second shot that required near perfect placement off the tee and perfect placement on the approach shot. Couple that with that you could not even see the green tucked behind the trees and mounds and it made for a ridiculous hole (I did par it after I hit a big slice around a tree and hoped for the ball to end on the green...which it did. Lucky for me, I ended near the pin....the green has quite the slope in it, as do most of them.) There was no way to recover from an errant tee shot or approach shot on many of these holes. Scrambling is impossible...you were either in the perfect spot or you were looking at an automatic bogey. The course was in good condition, although the bunkers could use some attention...although it is December, so you can understand if the course is not in perfect condition. If you are looking for a lot of blind shots and hitting up, down and around hills, valleys, trees, and bunkers this may be the course for you.
Test of all skills, shot selection key.
Course is better than most for the time of year. Very payable from tees matching skill level. Shot selection key and patience with results a must. birdies available for all.
Weeds?
Cart path only come on! Another Williamsburg golf course that reseeded so it's a long day with having to drive on the cart path. Golden Horseshoe was the same. (Although golden horseshoe was in great shape)
Tee boxes and greens had weeds and bare spots allover. Lots and lots of blind shots. Pretty scenery!
Definite do over
Average speed greens, not great for walking or cart path only unless you are in good shape; beautiful and interesting holes...definite do over
The back 9 greens were horrible
I have played this course in the past and really liked it. This time it was a calamity errors from the moment go. We booked our tee time for 1400 on a Saturday. When we arrived at the course an hour early we were told that they were running late because they had run out of carts. The pro shop was generous enough to not charge us for a bag of balls to use on the range. At 1430 we finally get our cart and make it to the 1st tee. Fortunately for us we were the first ones to tee off. By the time we stepped off of the tee box there were 8 carts waiting to tee off behind us. The front nine was great for me and the greens were in good order. When we hit the turn at 1650 we decided to stop and get something to eat. To our surprise they had already closed up the bar. On a Saturday, really, when they knew there were at least 4 foursomes behind us. The pro shop manager apologized and we proceeded to the back nine. The greens on the back nine were atrocious. Some of the greens actually had craters on them. With the number of depressions and holes putting was not fun at all.
good conditions, interesting layout
The course was in good condition and was not crowded. The layout was interesting with changes in elevation and doglegs. Good risk/reward.
