Reviews
Nice outta the way Iowa parks golf
Overall, Briggs Woods was better than my expectations- I did get a great deal, yet even at regular pricing would have felt it was a good option. Tight wooded back 9 will give most golfers Both a good time and the occasional frustration. Front nine was nice, through rolling hills - making it seem like it almost plays longer than you’d think based on tee to green yardages - but that was a good thing. Greens are in great shape, maybe even considered faster for Iowa. Went as a couple, and the Mrs. enjoyed it as well.
Fun & Quirky
I played Briggs Woods on a very windy day. I also had the entire course pretty much to myself. Not a lot of traffic on a Thursday afternoon in September.
Overall, I thought the course was a lot of fun. There is a good variety of holes that require thinking, especially off the tee. I played from the tips, which is 6502 yards. I quickly realized that tee shot placement is more important than distance. There are quite a few blind shots, so use the scorecard and the online course tour to help you your first time.
The greens were true, but a little on the slow side. I could tell that they had aerated a couple of weeks ago, which perhaps lead to them being a little on the slow side.
Overall the condition is what you'd expect from moderately priced, small town course. It wasn't immaculate, but nothing really bothered me. A few tees were a bit thin, probably because they are in really sanded areas. I think a trimming and thinning of the trees on the back 9 would really help the overall condition.
The clubhouse staff was friendly and very welcoming.
Overall this was a nice experience. I'd classify Briggs Woods as a hidden gem and would definitely play again!
Potential but needs work......
I had the opportunity to play Briggs Woods on Monday in an event. Here is my analysis...greens-moderately slow for me but in great condition...Bunkers-few but well maintained and good texture....fairways-a little long, but ok....the areas of concern to me was the condition of the tees that were in the wooded areas on back 9-they need to clear out some of the trees to allow air flow and sunlight to help develop those tees. We were teeing off on more dirt than grass. Cosmetically they need to clean up those ponds and creek areas as it showed a lack of maintenance and a lack of desire to make this a quality facility. Spend the cash or get out of the golf business and sell it to someone who will develop it properly. If I played this course I would be frustrated about maintenance rather than anything....it is a cute course that could be so much more.
Nicely kept
Extremely friendly with a small town flavor. The course has a few blind shots that play long with its hilly terrain. We found it quite challenging.
Too difficult if not playing well
The back 9 is too difficult. Not very fun when hitting it in hazard repeatedly
Fun course to play
Front 9 fairly open with generous landing areas, lots of elevation change and great views. Back 9 somewhat shorter but many holes are very narrow, accuracy is a must. Really enjoyed the round.
Fun Challenge
Course has a hole for every taste and skill level. Open front nine and challenging back nine.
Back 9 Ruined my oveall experience.
This is decent little muni course. I gave this course a less than glowing review for one main reason. It seems the people that maintain the course and maybe even the original architect have a very evil sence of humor. There are about four holes on the back nine on this course that set any golfer up for failure. I am a single digit handicapper and I was playing with some friends that are avg golfers with handicapps between 15-24. After playing an enjoyable first 12 holes the nightmare began. With on one else on the course, it took us two hours to play the remaining 6 holes. The next five holes are very heavilly wooded with fairways barely 15 yards wide and that is after splitting a gap of trees that is maybe 10 yards wide. Anything other than a perfect drive resulted in a lost ball. Dont get me wrong, I like a challenging course as much as the next guy, but it is safe to say that this stretch of holes are beyond challenging, they are down right unfair. The tee shot on Holes #13,15 & 16 are a joke! The sad part is, they have such potential to be a great holes if only they would trim back some of the trees. If you decide to play this course, remeber my words, your score will take a beating in this stretch of holes. Like I said, it is a joke and unlike anything I have ever seen. The only reason I would ever come play this course again is because it is very cheap with the GolfNow Hot Deal.
I had not played Briggs Woods for many years, but am I glad I did yesterday. The staff was very courteous, friendly .
Outstanding!!!! I am from Fort Dodge, Ia and grew up there and have always enjoyed playing here. What a great course!!!
Nice course
First round of the spring. The course was in pretty good condition as most courses around haven't even opened yet for the season. Front nine is open, but the back nine is tight. Some interesting holes.
4 holes on the back nine are really "tight"!
For a dry year like we're having this course is in great shape! The greens are in great condition and quicker than my "home " course. Unfortunately I was having a tough day striking the ball which was very frustrating! Sure can't blame the course for that problem! For an average golfer this course has several holes that can be a challenge unless you shoot straight down the middle to avoid the hazards. I will return for another try.
