The Apache Stronghold Golf Course is situated upon pristine land that, according to legend, was created by the God Usen to provide the Apaches with everything they needed to survive. It was called the Apache Stronghold because it had the protection of the Chiricahuas, Aravaipas, Superstition and White Mountains, and it is said that here the Apaches could walk invisibly among their enemies. The scenic golf course is the centerpiece of the Apache Gold resort. The unique landscape provides elevated tees, desert arroyos, and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. This 7,519-yard golf course will reward long hitters but golfers should be mindful of the washes and arroyos that crisscross the fairways. The layout doesn't have any water but there are 50 strategically placed bunkers coming into play and the rolling terrain provides plenty of hazards. Many holes are carved right into the foothills.

Play it again, Sam
Love this course! Very few issues, mostly with water? (A bit over watered in a few places) Also has a fungal problem on a few greens, but still roll true. Driver isn't needed on a couple of holes, but good placement does help. A great layout, with a few uphill shots that can challenge you. Hit um hard and keep um straight!
An experience!
I should have known it would be rustic when I was told "the 1st tee is down through the wash and don't give up you'll come to them eventually". The course is rough and not well layed out or marked. It is scenic but not worth the long drive from the Phoenix area.
Out of the way....but fun
What a fun course.....
Painted fairways....who cares, they held the ball well.
Out of the way....who cares, it was a blast.
Fuzzy tee-boxes....who cares, they were workable.
Strong mixes drinks....who cares because I needed it.
If you ever want to get away, Apache Stronghold is the place to go. It was quite a drive from the west valley, but worth it. Every golfer in the valley should make the trip at least once. The layout was great. The layout was fun. It was like we were the only people on the course.
Have you ever just stopped in the middle of a hole and observed the course around you?
Have you ever just stopped in the middle of a hole and listened to nature?
Feel free my friends because we didn't have anyone within 3-4 holes of us. It was great, just us and golf course....as it should be.
Great course
I enjoy it because it was out in the desert with no houses very quiet easy to get around very relaxing
A great course and conditions improving
If it was in good condition, this course would very possibly be the best public course in Arizona. It's just a spectacular routing with a wonderful mix of challenging holes, holes where you can score, holes that just make you laugh with delight, and greens that can confound and reward in equal measure.
As to the conditions, you have to know what you're getting. It wasn't so long ago that it looked as if this wonderful track was going to disappear and be reclaimed by the desert. The bunkers have all been restored with good sand and are in good condition. Tee boxes are scruffy in places but level and play well. The greens roll well with the exception that there are places where the grass has not yet come back. They keep the holes away from those locations; accept it and play around as necessary, if one such area should get in your way.
I played in early March. At this elevation, the grow-in hadn't quite come back yet so we were still playing dormant and painted fairways, but these conditions were actually ideal (the paint helps define the holes, but the dormant grass is an excellent and firm surface, ideal for the course). I have played in the summer when the fairways are excellent.
Our Review
The layout of the course was good, with lots of great holes!! This was our first time at Apache Strongold. The course will require some clean up along its golf cart paths. The day we played it was extremely windy...it would be nice to play at another time of the year.
Thank you for your comments. One of the features of the high desert are the occasional windy days which can, even with our generous fairways, make for a very challenging round. Please do come back and try us again.
Improving every time we play.
This course is getting better every time we play. Greens have always been awesome and now the fairways, bunkering etc. are improving. This is a real gem that is always fun to play. Recommend playing from appropriate tees for more enjoyment. 7500 yards is only for a small percentage of players. Rudy simply is an amazing staff member who could be one of the best outside services staff I have ever met. He is beyond great and a true ambassador to Apache Stronghold.
We greatly appreciate your comments. We are working hard to make Apache Stronghold the best golf experience in the Southwest.
Apache Sronghold
Amazing views. Fun course to play. Would recommend it as great value for the money.
And we will continue to get better! Promise!
A little rough but a lot of fun
When checking in the staff gets 12 out of 10. More than friendly and helpful. Got there early to use driving range, which was included!! Course condition was a little rough. Looked like the fairways were painted green. No biggie for us, we were not to concerned. The course plays very long, Very Long. The greens were decent and played very fast. The views are amazing and we had a lot of fun. Only downside was not much to eat at the turn, and the staff inside there a little on the rude side. I am looking forward to going back, but only if I can find another deal like I did this time.
Thank you for your comments. We take them very seriously. We recognize our snack bar is limited and hope to change that in the future. And, yes, the fairways are painted. Rather than overseeding we chose this to keep our rates down and greatly reduce our water usage. But, dormant bermudagrass is a great surface to hit off of...better than overseeding!
Beautiful day of golf
The course is getting better each year and the design is fun and challenging. The greens are in great shape and for winter conditions the fairways played great. The carts have GPS and they are very helpful, because of all the blind shots.
Beautiful views
This golf course is challenging, great views, elevations. Great layout overall. Recommended several times to people.
Thank you for your comments and your recommendations. Golf Week Magazine ranked our course as the #16 Public access course in Arizona in their December 2015 issue as well as one of the 10 Best Kept Secrets. You now know why!
HIdden Gem
Incredible layout with stunning vistas and without any homes along the fairways. The course improvements that have continued to take place over the past five years or so make this an excellent golf experience at an affordable price.
Thank you for your comments. We have a long range plan for improvement. Please return again.
Thank you for your comments. We have a long range plan and will continue to improve. Please come back.
The Stronghold! Great layout, excellent value
Played the Stronghold twice in the last week and a half, first on 10/29 and we didn't make it all the way through our round because of a rain/hail storm that made it's way through Globe as we tried to make the turn. Since then they have trimmed up the greens and they are rolling pure (aside from a few spots where standing water has led to dead patches, effected maybe 5 holes, only really came into play once due to pin placement) The rough is still pretty monsterous on most of the holes, it's been trimmed up a little it seemed but still brutal enough to lose a slightly errant shot if you don't find the fairway. The bunkers have been tended to and are in a lot better shape than just a week ago. The fairways and tee boxes are good not great condition. The layout however gets A+ marks, keeps you on your toes and interested the entire round. GPS in carts is a big help, especially for someone new to the track. This course has the potential to be a 5 star track, it's close, hopefully they keep up the recent strides in the right direction and it's back to the former glory soon.
Thanks for your comments. We recognize the rough is a little higher than usual. That is due to the need to encourage growth prior to the Bermuda going dormant. Tee boxes will improve as the overseed takes hold. Now, if the rains would just slow down!
Still got a ways to go to reclaim status
This is still one of the best layouts around. There appeared to be some improvement, but the course still has a long ways to go to be considered one of the better courses in the state. We describe the course as a world class layout in third world condition. Its still very rough around the edges and numerous drainage problems. Fairways are generally good and the greens are good except for bad patches here and there. Would love to see Troon take over and provide that level of maintenance. Otherwise we'll continue to come play once every other years or so, hoping to see improved conditions. Would gladly pay much more for better conditions and would come play several times a year if so. By the way, the staff was very friendly and helpful.
Thanks for your comments. We recognize one of our major problems is our drainage. We have had an inordinate amount of rain this fall and the course had no subsurface drainage when it was designed. We are installing drainage as fast as we can and have seen major improvement on several holes. That being said, we recognize we still need a lot more. We will continue to make improvements and hope to get our course conditions to the level the layout deserves.
Overall this is a good course
I enjoyed the wildlife, the views of the country and the condition of the course. Problems was with the overwatering, so it was wet and mud, with ground keeper vehicles making large ruts around some of the greens. Having to play and walk in the mud was not good. That being said it was a good course overall.
Thanks for your comments. Actually, we haven't watered the course in several weeks. Just a tremendous, and unusual, amount of rain. Sorry about the equipment tracks. We try to repair them as we go, but we have to cut the grass and, with the amount of rain we have had, some are inevitable.
Tough track
The Stronghold's length is not for the faint of heart. The layout is top notch hence the top 100 rankings years ago. Current conditions are lush and green. A little trim would help but I understand they have had A LOT of rain. Only negative I saw were some water spots on the greens but that was only 3 or 4 holes. Give this place a couple weeks and it will be well worth the drive.
Thank you. Our goal is to once again be in the top 100.
Native Desert Beauty
This is a great and challenging course with lots of sand traps, forced carries and some nice elevation and ravine shots. It caters more towards men given the length of some carries and limited distance advantages from the women s tees. They just came off overseeding and lost many balls in the first cut of rough as it was 3 to 4 inches high and the ball sank to the bottom of the grass, Suggest waiting until they cut down the rough a little as well as some areas in the fairways, Great challenging course for men but you have to be accurate off the tee. Loved it and would return
Sorry about the rough. We actually don't overseed but we had more than one inch of rain over two days this past week and haven't been able to cut. We are working on it now and will have the problem corrected soon. Glad you enjoyed the course.
Lots of fun and requires solid play
Apache Stronghold is a course that you go to have fun at. We like to drive out there a couple times a year for a different look AND a Wendy's frosty on the way back hehe. Its an hour and half from East valley so be open minded when you get there. The staff is awesome, prices are awesome and, while there are blemishes around, the course is good. Never had to bump once and only took relief on a Green to a foot away once. Stay out of the rough, the ball sits down and leave very tough shot. While most others are in over seed maintenance, the Stronghold is not. Bent greens and they don't over seed fairways. Our group were all low Hdcps and we had to play well to score so don't think it is a push over when you get there. Greens are very tough and it can stretch to 7200.. All in all, we will go back.
Thank you for your comments. We feel we are largely undiscovered. We are the only Tom Doak designed course in the southwest with fantastic scenery and NO HOUSES! Our reputation suffered from the neglect 2005-2013, but we have put a lot of effort into recovery and, while not 100% (yet) our conditioning compares very favorably with most courses in the valley. Come back soon.
The 2 hour drive out was worth it
Played a We Ko Pa style course for $10 ... well maybe the Tee blocks need some work & there are few other imperfections but a diamond in the rough. Picking the right Tees will make the round more enjoyable as there is some good carries & blind doglegs which the GPS really helps. Hole 7 is the toughest hole on the course. I will be back. There is a casino & RV park there so you can stay a couple days & have some fun.
Thank you for the nice comments. We are in the third year of our four year plan and hope to be better each time you play. And we also have a 146 room hotel!
The Wild Wild West
Man this course is rough. The cart paths are in really bad shape. The wooden bridges crossing revines are treturace with some of them half rotted with missing boards. There is a 6-10 ft drop off to a dry wash area. This is in a mountainous area with a lot of revines the cart paths are rutted and in need of repair.
On several holes long par 5 630 yards being the longest you have 2 different fairways to hit to. Very confusing to 1 st time players. Most all the holes you are 200- 250 to clear revines and brush area to hit the fairways. I liked the challenge but for a moderate players will have problems hitting to the fairways. My wife simply went to the fairway to hit her drives because of the difficulty hitting the fairway from the lady's tees.
The fairways were wide and in places very wet 2 of the fairways were closed off because they were so wet you could not drive the cart on them. Several were extremely soaked you had to walk a ways to get to your ball because of all the mud. As I said I enjoyed the challenge but remember it is a long long course with very wet and muddy conditions. So if you play it remember it is the Wild Wild West.
Thank you for your comments. By way of explanation for some of the issues you raised; Tom Doak designed this course to be "natural" and to have dirt cart paths. Although water does not come into play, he also designed seven holes where play crosses washes: two par 3's and five others where you must cross with your second shot. The GPS on the carts helps you negotiate the washes by giving distances and directions for all hazards. We also had two major rain events this week which, unfortunately, required closing two holes to cart traffic. With regard to the one bridge with broken boards caused by a fork lift, that is being repaired this week; however, the bridges are still wide enough to avoid the damage and are structurally sound. We also have five sets of tees so the course can be played from 5535 yards to 7519 yards depending upon your choice. I'm sorry you found the course not to your expectations. We understand our course can be challenging to golfers playing it for the first time but hope you will return now you have a better idea what to expect. Please stop and see me when you do.
- Steve Ravenkamp, Dir of Golf
I'm sorry we didn't meet your expectations. Mr Doak designed the course to be "rustic" and not another "cookie cutter" design. We do, however, recognize there is room for improvement and are working to make the course better. We have also installed GPS in our carts to provide exact yardages and have, accordingly, reduced or eliminated much of the artificial markings that take away from the natural beauty of the course.
