Grand Canyon University Golf Course
About
Grand Canyon University Golf Course (formerly known as Maryvale Municipal Golf Course) offers an 18-hole track designed by Ted Robinson, Sr. and built in 1961. The par-71 golf course measures 7,269 yards from the championship tees and is open year-round.
The Bermuda grass Grand Canyon University Golf Course gets plenty of shade during the summer, thanks to several onsite trees, and features flat and wide fairways.
The fourth hole, for one example, is a 160-yard par-3 where you'll have to shoot over the water - and past the brick wall that separates the green from the water.

Dangerous course
Everything is poor on that course, the layout, the conditions, the amenities, the pace, but most of all, the course is very dangerous, the fairways are too close too each other and we have seen somebody in our fairway almost every hole. The rating of that course is way too high. We hated that course.
Too slow
7 min btw tee times just isn't fair for those trying to get an afternoon round in... Golf should not be a 5+ hour game... Never saw a player Asst/Marshall...too bad because layout and course conditions were decent
Value
I Palau a lot of winter golf in Phoenix area in the winter and ft is not cheap compared to other coarses in the area GSU is near the top for value.
We had to wait on every hole. We had three groups waiting to tee off on three separate holes. No ranger or Marshall to speed up the group slowing everything down.
Late start, slow pace
Worse than most muni courses. Fore heard every hole. Pace slow (3 hours to play 9 holes).
Classic Layout with Abundant Bunkering
I really feel like this is a great value in the Phoenix area. Less than $100 during the week is pretty good when you are staring at $200+ greens fees all over the city. We played 2 rounds here during our trip in February.
This is a traditional layout, far from a desert feel. Fairways are mostly generous, and there are plenty of places you can find yourself in trouble. Most holes are lined by mature trees and there are a few lakes out there that will grab a ball or two.
The most notable feature of the course are the bunkers. They are huge and plentiful. Avoiding the sand here is a nearly impossible task. Many of the fairway bunkers are well placed right where you'll want to hit your tee ball, and the greensiders go deep well below the surfaces of the elevated greens. Conditions in the sandy areas were very good in most spots with a few areas having less sand than others. I feel like I played out of most of them.
GCU offers a lot of varieties of holes with a few tough par 3s and gettable par 5s. On the back nine there are some fun and relatively short par 4s. You may want to go for the green a couple times. I found myself hitting every club in the bag and loved every minute of it.
Conditions were very good. The overseed on tees, fairways and around the greens is in great condition. On days we played, the greens were in excellent shape. In a 5 day trip, GCU had the smoothest and most consistent greens we played amongst all courses.
There were really no negatives to report here. All around a solid and very fun golf course. I really enjoyed my rounds at GCU!
Just too bad
We had a fee time at 2 h18 but finally started at 3 h. Supposed they had a frost in the morning….so we could not play all of it, but 14 holes. After that it was impossible to continue…the darkness appeared and it was the end of the game by 6 and a half. Just too bad, it was such a nice course !
Fun course, good layout
This is a fun course that the average player will find a playable course, if you can avoid the plentiful bunkers.
Challenging lots of sand
Great challenging course. Lors of sand traps, greens fast.,
Well Maintained but Boring!
I played this course because it had an 83% recommendation on GolfPass as worth playing. I would not agree with this high recommendation. Yes - the course is quite well maintained - greens, fairways, tee boxes, and bunkers but the course is on a flat / square piece of property in the middle of Phoenix. The fairways just go back and forth with bunkers and a few water ponds being the only challenges. One of the most negative aspects of this course is the constant street noise. Sorry - even though the the course is well maintained - I would not recommend playing this course very often.
Great!
This course was great, not just for the money (which, it is far less than Scottsdale area courses), but the layout was really good and a solid course. The front sort of goes around the perimeter (so OB left for the first half), but the holes vary from short/strategic to long. Greens were great, fairway was in great shape. Very fun. I’d definitely play again.
First round
We played GCU for our first round while in town for a couple of weeks. I liked the course layout and degree of difficulty. It helps to keep the pace of play moving along. I will play it again.
Phoenix is too expensive.
Came from Tucson to play.
Greens are dormant painted and very grainy.
Rest of course is nice and course is a good layout.
To golf in Phoenix is double that of Tucson.
Would pay $75 for same course in Tucson.
Enjoyed the day overall.
