Championship at Moon Valley Country Club
About
Moon Valley Country Club's Championship course features excellent conditions and a spot in Arizona's long golf tradition on a par-72 18-hole course first designed by Dick Wilson and redesigned by Bob Cupp and Associates. This golf course challenges all levels, playing 5,285-7,216 yards.
Moon Valley Country Club's Championship course begins on a par-4 371-yarder, requiring a drive left to see the green: bunkers guard front and left. The fourth is a par-5 511-yarder. Shoot a birdie. Keep the tee shot away from the right fairway bunker. Close on the 411-yard, par-4 18th, which requires an accurate drive to miss bunkers right and trees and water left. You'll face the course's most intimidating shot: a two-tiered green, featuring a left side four feet higher than the right, 15 yards deep. It's guarded front back by bunkers. The hole location on the right is difficult.
Bunkers block a green sloping front to back, making it tough to stop the ball on the surface.

Flat land next to mountains
Course is very flat but next to great views. Enjoyable course to play.
Lots of sand
The yardage markers are difficult to find. The course had lots of sand traps, but otherwise is uninteresting. Some very green, pretty fairways. Minimal services.
Good value
Nice choice, not to difficult, no real obstacles. Was great for my wife. Played in 3:30, great pace
Great course, beautiful day.
I've lived in the valley for over 20 years now , but had never had the chance to play Moon Valley. It used to be the course that the LPGA used to play when in town, but has not been on their list for many years. I believe the course used to be strictly private, but seems to have recently started taking public tee times. If it has been open to the public longer, then I've been missing out.
The court was in great shape. Fairways were fantastic and the greens were quick and ran true. We played the tips, and it was pretty challenging. There were several long par 3s and 3 par 5s that are 550+. We really liked the course layout, and the staff was very nice. I'd definitely play there again.
Great course for a great price.
Nothing but a great experience. I thought it was a perfect start to my snowbird season.
Slow play by arogant members
4: 45 round behind a member group that had no regard for the groups following. Not a good value when you consider what you have to put up with.
Traditional course
This is a very nice traditional course in very good shape. Enjoyed the round.
Rude members, and pro-shop management.
My tee-time was 1:12PM 1/30/2014. I arrived and checked in the pro-shop at approximately 12:15PM. I made my way to the range where there where virtually no range balls to hit. I then made my way to the putting area adjacent to the 1st tee, for a few putts. At 1:10PM I was standing on the tee box warming up as usual. At 1:12PM I teed up my ball and was about to hit when a twosome loudly approached the tee-box, proceeded to ask me to not tee off, and instructed me that there next up. I kindly told them we had a 1:12PM tee-time and I'm ready to tee off, he then went on to say that he and his golf partner were late and insisted he tee off not only in front of me, but tee off on "my" tee-time. I recommended that since he was "late" why don't we play as a foursome and he stated, "no" I'm a member and don't play with non-members. Because I didn't want to create a scene I politely allowed him to tee off before us, and watch him hit a gigantic hook off the first tee, which he then reached into his pocket and tee up another ball and hit another pull tee shot with a second pull. His playing partner's golf game was 10x worse than the first guy. These were both 30-year old guys. When the young kid from the pro-shop who checked me in came out to the tee box before we teed off I asked him what that was all about, and I don't appreciate guys showing up late, and teeing off on "my" tee time. He stated they were "members" and the younger smaller guys does not like playing with "non-members". I stated if you don't want non-members playing the course than close it to the public, but don't take my money and treat me as a second class golfer, I also let him know that his actions as the starter and pro-shop manager where unacceptable and he should have told the "members" either join us as not to delay our round or slide them back into another tee time opening. I've played this course on and off for the past 35 years, and have never seen it more poorly managed and overall course conditions as bad. We than went on to wait 7-15 minutes waiting on each tee box while I watched the member(s) hit multiple tee balls on each hole, and then multiple tee shot "in the fairway". I'd be embarrassed to be a member at this club with guys who don't respect the game, but have even less common sense about being a gentleman. I've played EVER major high-end true "member-only" golf club as a "guest member" and was treated in every way as a "member" maybe even better because there was a chance I might be joining the club some day. Moon Valley needs to re-evaluate their policy on membership's and either post a message to their members on how to behave, retrain their pro-shop employees, or just close the course and make it a true "member-only" course. As far as I'm concerned as a 50 year old mature man, last time I looked my money spends as well as the next guy, I'm polite and kind on the golf course and I don't assume anything less of the man standing next to me regardless of his wealth, income, age, race, religion... I'm not sure my values are the same of ownership, management or its members. Respectfully Yours, Mr. E.
Winter golf
For a winter weekend golf getaway, this course was awesome. The course was in excellent condition and the greens were relatively quick and true. The only negative was that yardage was hard to gauge for a 1st timer.
REally nice course and we will be back
Classic old style treat
Wonderful classic golf course. A real treat and change of pace from other desert courses in Phoenix. The surrounding area is somewhat tired but the golf course is a gem. Great practice area too. Played my round on a hot deal which was excellent value for the money.
Cool old style course in great central location.
Never heard of this place and was suggested by a local we played with earlier. 60 yr old course approx that winds through houses, no chance of hitting them. Tees are perfect, fairways and greens ok. Overall multi use facility is showing its age but is still nice. Will play again. Tucked in a mature area, Thunderbird and 7th St. Easy to get to from Scottsdale or downtown. I would not hesitate to suggest you play 1 round here, especially if you get a discount.
A good day, but lots of walking!
We liked this course a lot - played well within 4 hours. Our only comment is that when we made our tee time through Golf Now, they said it was NOT cart path only, but it was. While we could drive in the rough, it still involved a lot of walking, this after we'd already had a 4-mile hike that morning. You may wish to clarify with Golf Now. Great staff, nice facility. We'd like to play again when we can drive the course.
Nice design
This is a nice course with a nice layout, but it's not in the kind of condition I remember it when I followed Annika Sorenstam around and watched her shoot 59. I have always wanted to play this course since then. The rough was really high and made it hard to find balls when you missed the rough. Not the kind of rough that is meant to be challenging, but just not cut. There were some patchy bare spots in places, also. But the greens and most of the fairways and tees were in good shape. Nice facilities and clubhouse, too. Staff was very nice.
Enjoyed
Course in very good shape though green little on slow side.
Love the country club atmosphere
The only thing that I didn't like is that the rough was like playing at the U.S. Open. Lost about 5 balls because it was so high and grass clippings were not picked up. Probably from all the rain we had but expected the course to be a bit tidier.
a bit shaggy, but overall solid
All the recent rain has led to US Open type rough. Clearly this course is being neglected, but its still a quality track. Greens were very good.
Mature course worth playing
There had been a storm a few days before and the course was in rough shape but I copuld see how it would be a nice course under normal circumstances.
Private course allowing public to play in off season.
Private course formerly run by Troon. There were very few players so I had time to practice driving and putting. I played by myself and finished in 2.5 hours. Because of flooding yesterday, there were some spots on the course that were muddy. The grass was pretty tall and they were mowing during my game. What I liked about the course is that there are a lot of dogleg right holes which plays well for my tendency to slice. Mature trees provide a nice feel for an Arizona course. Very different from most of the desert courses I have played here.
