Lakes Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club
About
The Genoa Lakes Golf Club's Lakes Course brings water into Lake Tahoe-Reno golf. It's found on 14 of the 18 hole on the Lakes Course and it's not always nice tame water of staid old country clubs either. Sometimes you'll be shooting over near swamps with tall gnarly grasses poking out of them. That's the Lakes Course.
It's one of the more natural settings in an area known for its nature settings. You'll see cows along the border of the course - and birds will come flying up that you probably can't identify.
Lakes Course is a Peter Jacobsen and John Harbottle III design with rolling fairways, some tight shot openings and good views. It's 7,359 yards of golf with the Carson River and wetlands riding shotgun. It's located in Carson Valley, an often forgotten town, that's right inbetween the big gaming spots of Reno and Lake Tahoe. That makes Genoa Lakes Golf Club a pretty easy course to get to from most of the popular areas in the High Sierras.

Course was not in great shape
There are major issues, mostly on the front nine, but throughout the course really. Large sections of fairway are bare/hardpan, many of the greens, particularly on the front nine, have bare patches.
It has been a tough year for growing grass up here, and all courses are suffering a bit, but it appears that the maintenance budget was gutted at this course.
My playing partner had played here before and remembered it being very nice, and other people that I've talked to told me that as recently as last year the course was in pretty good shape. Not the case currently unfortunately.
I'm glad that I didn't pay full price. I would not play this course again in it's current state. It is a nice layout and seems like with some TLC could be a good course again.
Beautiful local…….needs some TLC
It is in a beautiful location with the Carson River running through it with the Mountains seeming like they are so close! Each hole had a tee marker showing you the hole and distances. They were in some cases had deferent yardage than the sire card. Many of the markers needed to be repainted so I assumed the scorecard was more accurate. Worth the extra cost to play Lakes over Ranch.
Great Round despite the mostquitos
Played Genoa Lakes course yesterday after 1pm, and used the Hot Deal from GolfNow. Staff was super nice and friendly, and the amenities, including the bar and restaurant, and clubhouse are gorgeous. Arrived and checked in seconds. Since it was Monday afternoon, the driving range was closed for maintenance, but there are plenty of great practice greens and chipping areas. Hardly anyone there when we were there, so we had the green light to tee off whenever we wanted. We started as a twosome, and after a couple of holes, a single caught up with us who was super friendly, so we asked him join us, which he did. The fairways were in great condition, except for a few problem areas where water collects, but plenty of good grass to hit from. Greens also in very nice shape and rolled nicely. At the turn we added another single, and all enjoyed a fun round. At the price we paid for green fees, it was the best golf value around. Will definitely be playing there again. As far as environmental conditions, there has been a large vegetation fire burning several miles away, but the golf course was blanketed in a cloud of dense smoke, and it was very windy at times(which added to the challenge). The only negative thing I can think of is that there is a lot of mosquitos, so bring bug repellent...and use a lot. I felt like I was getting eaten alive, so I had to reapply the bug repellent. The pro shop was kind enough to supply us with bug spray. But I wouldn't let man-eating mosquitos interrupt a round of golf.
Bunkers Need to be Redone
Every bunker I saw was very wet and firnly packed coarse sand or maybe granite. Super difficult to play out of greenside. They had been raked, but not smoothly. Reminded me of mid-Covid when all golf courses basically gave up on their sandtraps. Issue generally with this course is irrigation. Lots of dry/dead grass next to overwatered areas and soggy bunkers even midafternoon on a 90° day.
Genoa Lakes Golf course great play
The Genoa golf course provides water hazard challenges , thick secondary grass cuts adding to challenge of course and nicely maintained greens. The play is steady with no backups and no frustrating slow players. Clubhouse provides great amenities and great staff to help answer any questions. Sand traps could use better sand and less water retention. Use a very aggressive shot to carry ball to the green.
Fun and Challenging
Greens were in excellent condition, fairways a little rough in places, due mainly to drought conditions. Overall great day, love the challenge.
Beautiful layout. Greens in great shape. Some Fairways were a bit rough. Staff was very friendly especially the cart lady and food staff. The mosquitoes came out with a vengeance it the late afternoon. Bring mosquito repellent ior you will need a blood transfusion after. No kidding. Otherwise it was great
Awesome
The staff was exceptional. I'm not sure what else to say. My experience there was second to none. I really enjoyed myself. Thanks for everything.
