Toiyabe Golf Club
About
Nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Toiyabe Golf Club (formerly known as Thunder Canyon Country Club and Lightning "W" Ranch Golf Course.) has a picturesque landscape of shimmering lakes, meandering streams, and towering pines. This course has a traditional layout that features contoured fairways and fast, generous greens. There are nearly 50 bunkers strategically placed throughout and water comes into play on 14 holes. Elevated tees provide spectacular views of Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain. The golf course is challenging but still player-friendly with seven sets of tees. In addition to the course, Toiyabe Golf Club also offers practice facilities that include chipping and sand practice areas along with an expansive putting green.

Great, until you hit the greens.
The course is great and gorgeous. However, the greens were either fast or slow, not consistent. The pin placements were to difficult. Many on slopes that were impossible to maintain.
Beautiful scenery
The course layout was excellent and challenging. Super undulated, very fast greens. Good value compared with Reno and Carson City courses.
Drunken Scramble
There were two foursomes playing a scramble in front of my group. They were slow so the front nine too over two and a half hours. Both foursomes decided to discuss their front nines over lots of beer and whiskey at the tenth tee box.
No marshal lets this type of situation occur. When we arrived at the tee box, the first foursome decided to set their bottles down and tee off. By the time the second foursome teed off three groups were waiting.
I played the tenth and could see this would be a six+ hour round so my day ended with only ten holes or $7.50/hole. When groups are on the course they should be monitored.
Other than the bad pace of play, the course was especially beautiful with fall colors and excellent conditions. I mentioned the drinking party slowing down the pace to a whiskey crawl when I left.
Always a slow pace
Like the course. Always in good shape nice clubhouse and staff
Pace is always a little slow
Beautiful day!
Always a treat to play such a nice course for under $50. Hope to come again soon!
Endless scenery
Absolutely beautiful, pace of play was absolutely horrible, even after 3 calls to clubhouse to complain about the slow pace. People who don’t know how to play golf should at least understand the rules and etiquette. It’s no country club if that’s what you’re used to! The course itself is stunning..
Pace pf play
Everyone was great as usual, love coming here.
Two things I would like to ask???
Recently the first hole has been backed up some, can you have someone check to see if anybody is coming up #9 hole, if not, then let some golfers start on hole #10?
Hoe bout more "early" afternoon specials? The guys I play with can't play in the mornings because of other commitments, so we end up having to play somewhere else. THANKS.
Beautiful day; good shape
Haven't played out here in a year or so and wanted to get back.
Was reminded immediately how much I enjoy the course and the layout.
Course was quite wet and soggy in spots after some heavy weekend rain. But greens were in great shape, receptive and rolling pure.
Front nine was heading towards a three-hour clip and no marshals were found on the course. Slow foursome let us play through on No. 7 however and things got better.
Strongly recommend a GPS app for newcomers to the course. There's a few holes where it's needed.
A few suggestions
Course had some bad spots…. Large muddy spots, some soggy fairway spots, a couple greens and even tee boxes were soggy in spots, way over watered. One fairway was torn up. No maps showing hole layouts either on scorecard or hole sign boards… tough for first timers to know what’s ahead, especially when there are as many hazards as that course has. Very challenging in that regard along w tough greens. But it did make it fun! Very nice scenery and very nice people. Beautiful clubhouse, nice amenities.
