Tanna Farms Golf Club in Geneva offers some of the best golf that the Fox Valley has to offer. The layout meanders across prairies covered with wildflowers and weaves through lush wetlands. The course begins with the stunning signature hole. The par-3 opener has an island green that sets the scene for this thrilling and memorable round. Although it's a seemingly short course at 6,510 yards from the back tees, what it lacks in length it makes up for with plenty of other challenges. Besides the first hole, there are a few other tough par 3s, including one with a postage-stamp sized green. There are some daunting par 5s as well. Tanna Farms Golf Club is not a lengthy course but the layout is generously spaced to offer breathing room between the holes and the undulating slopes and subtle elevation changes make it pay much longer.

Can’t see.

Overall the course has a nice design. Each hole is laid out totally different from the prior. Which is good. Most of the sand traps are groomed nicely. However, there are a couple holes on the back nine that have very tall grasses ahead of the tee box and you are unable to see where to hit. Unless you play their frequently, it is impossible to find the correct direction. Very frustrating. Other than that, this is a fun, challenging course.

Much Harder Than Slope/Course Rating

Had not played here in a couple of years. Always an interesting layout, the wetland areas have grown up to the point they are a significant factor. Recently played Cantigny (blue tees: 138 slope) and Orchard Valley (blue tees: 134 slope), and found Tanna to be much more difficult (126 slope): several very long carries over the swamps with no bail-out areas. Bring plenty of balls (I lost 9). Bunkers had no sand - just hardpan. Greens very nice: interesting, true, and held approaches well.

Nice but needs help

Always liked Tanna Farms. Course was in ok shape. Greens a little slow and didn't roll true. Fairways nice and rough deep. You can tell it's minimally cared for but not their fault. Like others they finding difficulty getting people to work. They hiring for multiple positions. The grill essentially closed except for the bar and hotdogs and chips for food. Golf shop guy clearly didn't want to be there- unfriendly and not very appreciative of us being there. Complained of no one wanting to work due to unemployment extensions. He was right. Good value for price.

Average course. Get what you pay for

There are no longer any amenities at this course. There is no bar and no restaurant. The tee boxes and sand traps are in very poor condition. It is still a fun place to play but do not expect above average

We play Tanna each season with our Golfvisions Players Pass. Scroll down to find my previous reviews. Despite teeing off near 1pm on a Saturday the pace was pretty decent. The course itself is in okay shape except for the muddy worthless sand traps which are still not maintained. Greens had good pace....not overly fast - spongy and wet. So with all the foot traffic around the hole it was pretty much hit and miss if your ball stayed on line. The tee boxes looked a tad better than they have in recent years but several were divot laced and needed a rest. All staff was friendly as all get out - pro shop/starter/bar tender/on course beverage cart - thank you!

Tanna has a worthless tiny practice putting green and no where to even warm up. They really should fix that a large practice green and some warm nets perhaps? Your initial swing is to a Par 3 island green. The target is large but many will be marking a cruddy double more starting out with a waterlogged initial slash and splash. A number of tee shots are pure target golf.... pretty much mid-iron tee shots - #4, #12 and now on #13....this fairway always had flooding/water issues/grass issues since course opened - they just let the swamp grow completely across the fairway in what was the original tee shot landing area. The signed yardages on each tee box to the new hazard might be 10 to 12 yards short....our tee box said 185 and I know I don't hit an easy six iron more than 165 and I almost went too far......don't get too close - the swamp grass are 6 to 7 feet high already.

Course starts out short and sporty out to the 12th hole - not really taxing or difficult. The 13th thru 17th are a meaty stretch finish with three good sized par 5's and a long dog leg left 4 and a long Par 3. But the 18th also has a target golf type tee shot. Get as far left as you can on your tee shot on 18 otherwise you have some issues routing your approach - a large tree guards and protects the clubhouse on the right about 25 yards short of the green.

I noticed that several greens have lost size....the 7th green especially. Grounds crew should pay attention to that. There's 15 feet of fringe on the right side of 7th green and maybe 10 feet or more on the left side.

Clubhouse bar was open with hot dogs. Problem is the course never returns to the clubhouse until the 18th. No drinking water on course either....porta potty right of 9th green. Make certain there's a beverage cart out....otherwise you have to provision up at the clubhouse before you tee off!

Overall slightly over 3 stars...maybe a 3.2/3.3.....$40 value at most. Recommend for play at least once a season.

I'd be remiss not to mention that nearby Mill Creek Golf Course is still closed due to litigation between the owner and their former management company. You used to be able to warm up at the Mill Creek range and then head over to Tanna. There's still hope that Mill Creek will eventually reopen....Mill has some really fun and interesting green complexes. GolfVisions manages the Tanna operations and they also have been maintaining Mill Creek tees/fairways/greens the past two seasons.....greens with no play for over 2 seasons now. I made it a point to drive past Mill Creek - it looks absolutely fantastic and will a joy to play again - fingers crossed Mill Creek reopens...it's a far better course than Tanna. Mill also has a Par 3 course and 3 additional holes that members can play/practice on.

Still only 3 stars

First time playing course in over 7 years. Cashier/pro shop worker very nice and welcoming. Cart lady pleasant and visible. Course itself though, at best, 3 out of 5 stars. Ownership needs to invest money into a complete re-bunkering. Granted, they ARE hazards, but even the scratch player will have difficulty hitting a ball off of concrete with a lip in front. Still trying to figure out the intent of 13 (taking driver out of the player's hands on a 580-yd par 5) and 16 (one should always be able to see the flag on a par 3) without labeling them as tricked-up holes. Tee boxes are eaten up a little and greens more pock-marked than not, but you can tell grounds crew are making attempts to improve. Divot mix in the carts would go a long way. Overall, a fun course with conditions more suitable to a $45-$50 price point. Make the improvements and it would be worth the $57 current asking price.

Fantastic Course

From Mike (front desk) and Judy (bartender) to the drink cart ladies…..just an amazing staff on hand. The course was amazing to play and challenging. Despite the amount of rain, the course was in fantastic condition. Looking forward to playing here again during my next visit.
