Good deal
Look for the deals and this layout is one of the best in town- very fun course! Greens were ok/good rough was thick and all bunkers are GUR
Still disappointed
This was once a top course to play for me now I try it every year when I believe conditions will be good. Bunkers still unplayable for the fifth or sixth season ... I've lost count. They've also cut back to 3 tee boxes. Two are too hard for the average golfer and the silvers are for seniors and too short to allow driver for our group. GPS in carts don't work. And several cart path areas collapsed.
Bunkers are terrible
Love the layout! Always have! They have new owners, so hopefully the bunkers are going to get works on! Right now it is basically dirt, so you have to drop out to the nearest point. Greens were fast, but need people to repair ball marks!
Course has really gone downhill
Very disappointing. The bunkers were totally unplayable, they look like they haven’t had any care whatsoever. The fairways were very thin in many places, I would have rather been in the rough. The greens were recently aerated (really,? this time of year?) and rolled very unevenly. So sad as this was once a nice course before Greatlife got a hold of it. Don’t waste your time or money.
Great, challenging course
Great course, lots of water in play and lots of sand traps. Being in Olathe, the wind is also in play. Greens were fast and true. Lots of prairie grass comes into play, so you need to be accurate on your shots. Fun course that you have to travel through surrounding neighborhood. Only knock on this course was the sand was really mud and was like hitting off hard pan.
One a good course.....Prairie is now lost!
I used to love to play Prairie Highlands. The course was always in good shape and the staff was attentive. Neither remains true! If the trip is an extra drive vs. other course options, don't waste the drive time!
Great Life KC Is Destroying KC Golf
Pros: GPS in golf carts is useful for distance to the greens and bunkers ahead of you. Has a nice layout. These are all of the pros.
Cons: I've read other reviews for other Great Life KC managed courses and how they've completely dropped the ball. This is my first time playing a GLKC managed course after they took it over and I can confirm what you hear is all true.
I've never played a golf course where literally every single bunker had 10% the sand it should have. There were weeds growing out of the dirt in the bunkers and even softball-sized rocks in one.
There were weeds all around the course, including the fringe. The ponds/lakes were at 10% water. I literally walked on the lake floor 10 feet in to pick up a ball.
The fairways were all rock-hard with shriveled, matted down grass that did nothing to hold the ball up. Had to find patches of "good" fairway to play on. The rough was like thin dried out straw.
Greens were cut very short to give appropriate speed, but mixed with some sort of loose sand so the surface isn't actually level. Straight putts rarely went straight as a result.
This course layout has the potential for a really great outing, but the very poor attention to aesthetics made it difficult to simply even enjoy the environment. I've played difficult courses all over and still had a great time from getting to enjoy the beautiful scenery. This is not one of those courses, currently, or in the near future will it be.
Great Life KC forces people to pay a monthly fee for 12 months even when many of those months you can't play golf. They get their money from members regardless, so it's clear they don't care about providing a good golfing experience for them.
They've taken a few of my favorite courses and let them turn to crap. My recommendation is to not become a member of this organization and force them to change their ways if they want our money. Absolutely ridiculous and so disappointing.
I don't know how a golf course can allow itself to get to this condition. I don't know if they fired their grounds crew or what, but they should feel ashamed charging full prices for the experience they provide. Do not play here.
First Time & More than Likely My Last!
I should have read the reviews before I decided to try this Course. It's too bad the layout is OK, but when you consider that the fairway and Greenside bunkers are a significant part of the courses defense, But are in UNPLAYABLE Condition, the Course becomes a disgrace. I would not suggest playing the Course, unless you can agree to take a free drop from the overgrown, unedged dirt filled bunkers. This could be a Good Course, but unfortunately someone has given up financially on this place.
Ok
Slow. Never saw a Marshall all day..-another money saving move I guess. All the reviews on conditions are accurate-bone dry rough, traps are literally UNPLAYABLE. Pure dirt. This is not a weather issue-it’s to save $$. We quit playing in them since they obviously do not care. Greens were Ok. Always enjoy the layout but will not play here until they at least fix the traps
Great Layout
It’S easy to see that once upon a time this course was fabulous. Unfortunately it has been allowed to decline to a sad state.
This seems to be a trend with Greatlife properties.
I hope at some point in time the philosophy will change and the will commit to providing quality product.
Nice course with high ceiling
Played this course on 6/11 and had a nice time despite the heat. The layout is nice and the fairways and greens are in good condition. God help you if you hit it in the bunker however... the bunkers are made from dirt and sand from the 80’s. Only had a few interactions with the grounds tee and staff. On #12 a high school/college kid with headphones was watering the green and was aloof that there might be people playing the hole. I chipped my ball into his hose to help him realize I was there. Outside of that unpleasant experience I had a good time.
Course was excellent except for the bunkers. None of the bunkers had been prepped. It was a shame because the bunkers are a distinct part of the difficulty. Otherwise, pace of play and other areas were in great shape.
Links style golf!
The course was in great shape. The bunkers were another story. Most were overgrown. Stay out of those and you'll have s great time.
Disappointing
Prairie Highlands has been one of my favorite courses, but I was disappointed with the course conditions. Fairways did not appear watered and weeds in traps. Courses should be in peak condition this time of year.
Fun Course!
Having not played this course for a number of years, it was fun getting back out on it. At first glance, the course seems wide open. However, narrow fairways and thick rough with a strong wind, made this more of a challenge.
Definitely would play again!
Nice course
The wind was howling but it was still a great time and the course is coming around nicely with the spring weather finally arriving. Everything was great except the bunkers could use some sand, the few times I was in them it felt more like I was hiting out of loose dirt.
Sad condition
Course was airated a few weeks ago and they obviously are not watering.
Bunkers are hard dirt and rocks.
Could be such a nice course.
