Great first experience
Great first experience. We bought a 4-some from GolfNow. The day we went to the course, two golfers bailed on the suspect weather. There was no raincheck available since the other golfers didn't show. Two of us played that day and had a great time. The rain we had gotten over the past few days was hardly noticeable (excellent drainage on the course) except for the bunkers (we allowed free drops from the water in the bunkers). After our 18, I went back in to the clubhouse and explained out situation from earlier on how 2 golfers decided not to play. They allowed my friend and I to play another 9 the same day. Overall we didn't end up too bad on the "deal". My buddy and I were beat after 27 holes though!
Doesn't Live Up to it's Billing
Knowing Old Silo is ranked as the #1 public course in Kentucky I had high hopes and expectaions. After the round, I have no clue how it was given such an honor. Aside from the fairways, the course was in terrible shape. Not a single bunker was raked and they were all rock hard and some had standing water in them. The greens were not in good shape either. Just about every one had numerous ball marks and other blemishes. The layout is tough and there are some tricky elevation changes which make it fun to play but until they fix the greens and the bunkers, I can't recommend Old Silo. I was very disappointed.
Old Silo a bit overrated
The staff was friendly and eager to help. The greens were showing fatigue with ball marks. A few of the tee boxes were very roughed up. The secondary rough was very long but easy to hit from, if you could find your ball! Sand traps were non existent. Several were filled in with grass and some had dirt for the surface. The course layout and the views make this a good course to play once. I would not rate this as the number 1 public course in the state. Looks like it was very upscale at one time but like a lot of golf courses it appears the spending on the course has dropped off significantly. Still a good value for the money.
Nice, but....
Very nice practice green, but the course greens need some work. The bunkers are a waste of time and no maintenance has been done on these awful things this season.....I don't believe they've been raked at all in 2014. Another thing I noticed is this course has a lot of "good 'ol boys" out there playing. What I mean is that there were numerous groups of doubles, singles, and so forth that just jump from hole to hole. If you hold a group up for any length of time they'll will pass up the hole your on and go to the next, maybe this is something common in Mt. Sterling to do, I'm not sure. Overall this is a challenging course and the 18th hole is a gem, and I'll probably play again, but after hearing how great Old Silo was for years it did not live up to it's hype. Glad I got a deal on GolfNow....wouldn't want to spend full price.
Almost Perfect
The course was in excellent shape. Fairways were firm and fast, greens were fast and rolling true. The only thing that stood out were the bunkers! They were truly awful. For everything else being so well maintained on the course, it was shocking to see the bunkers in such bad shape.
Great course
This is probably the best course I've played in ky. The course was in great shape but definitely not for beginners. It's a fairly long course with some tight fairways and some huge elevation changes. I've been on valhallas grounds and it's the only course I've seen that's more picturesque in ky. I've played magnolia at disney world which used to be on tour and this course is better. Tons of fun to play but the tall heavy rough sections are hopeless if a drive is more then 20-30 yards off line your in 2-3ft weeds on many holes.
Old Silo 9/10/14
This was our day 1 course for our group of 12's annual fall golf trip. Interesting layout. Reason for the average condition rating is primarily for the condition of the sand traps. Lots of traps and all I can assume is the ownership has made a decision not to maintain them. So bad we made an agreement before we started that any ball in a trap can be pulled out. Guess the plus is it helped our scores :). Greens were good, but lots of unrepaired ball marks.
We teed off at 2pm, very little traffic on the course.
Not recommending this course until they get their sand trap situation fixed.
Great course
Old Silo is a wonderful place to play golf. It is apparent that the staff puts a lot of effort into keeping the greens healthy and smooth. I always like putting here. The greens have a good amount of slope and are generally quicker than most courses in the area. The fairways are bentgrass, and also tend to be in very good condition. There are many great views on the course, including a large elevation drop on the number 6 tee shot and number 15 approach. The view of 18 from the clubhouse restaurant and porch is quite nice too.
The practice facility includes a large putting green, a chipping green with sand bunker, and a full driving range. I particularly like the sand practice area, since there are a lot of bunkers on the course (although some have been taken out since the course opened). Unfortunately, most of the bunkers on the course are in bad condition, having long ago turned into dirt and/or mud traps. When playing, you may want to utilize an unofficial "free drop from bunkers" rule, or at least move the ball to a place in the bunker that is more playable. This problem could be easily fixed by putting new sand in the bunkers--but this could be expensive considering the number of bunkers. I assume they are saving money by leaving the bunkers as they are. If you have to choose between the condition of the grass and the condition of the sand, grass is more important.
As much as I harp on the bunkers, this is really the only negative about Old Silo. It is a beautiful and challenging course with incredible rates on golfnow.com. Definitely a "must play" course in Kentucky.
Not worth the money
Have always enjoyed Old Silo in the past but I got the feeling this time that they are living on their past reputation. Overall, the course was not in great shape with many weeds and patchy spots in much of the fairways. Roughs were also not taken care of very well and their were all sorts of high weeds spotted in the grassy rough just off the fairways. Bunkers are just about unplayable, as others have mentioned. Most of the tee boxes are pretty chewed up and it was tough finding a place to tee your ball up and then find good footing on several of the tees. I was able to get a deal to golf here today but some friends refused to pay the amount OS is charging when there are so many other courses in the area that are in better shape and cost much less. Old Silo is a very challenging and fun course but they need to get to work to get back to the position where they first gained their reputation as one of Kentucky's best public courses. They are far from that now.

Old silo
Beautiful course but bunkers aren't playable. Good course overall.
Extremely Slow
5 hrs for a twosome on a Wednesday, poor scheduling or they need a marshal, not an easy course to pass people if they don't have the common sense to let you play through
A beautiful course
This was my first time an what a challenge. It is a great course and lots of sand trouble so look out. Mother nature put us on delay and they gave us a rain check for the holes we didn't get to. A got play course and play again for sure.
My last review was taken down
My last review for some reason was taken down. I said that the golf "pro" and head manager at old silo ruined our visit. My buddy and I are younger golfers, both of us are 27. And we were followed by them on half of the wholes. We are very respectable golfers and play around 3 times a week. Their behavior was unwarranted as the only thing we had done wrong was being in a younger age bracket. Other then that the course was AMAZING.
Very good for the price
Greens and fairways were in wonderful condition, the only gripe I had with the course was the bunkers. Every single bunker (there were a lot of them) was muddy or rock hard. I will definitely come back and play though. Very friendly staff, very well-maintained course (aside from the bunkers)
Great course, waterlogged bunkers
This course is 30-40 minutes from Lexington and well worth the drive. Great value at $25 round on weekdays on Golfnow! Beautiful layout with wide fairways and big elevation changes. Only downside were the bunkers- they were either waterlogged or rock hard.
The ppl that plat this course do not seem to be versed in golf etiquette though. I played as a single and ran into a 5some! Not only that but they refused to let me and another single behind me play through! Very ignorant! They seem to be regulars-hope u don't run into them.
Great layout
Overall, the course was in good shape and was a very challenging layout. However, the bunkers were in terrible shape. Several of them were marked as ground under repair, but almost all of them were unplayable. There was very little sand in any of them.
love this course
This was my first time playing this course and would gladly return. The greens were probably the fastest I've played in a few years. There were a few bunkers in need of care but over all a really good experience. People I've talked to say this course was really great a few years ago . If so I hope it can return to that state because it is a good layout and a good test .
love the challenges
My husband and I played this course several years ago and remembered it to be a very nice and challenging course. Since we were traveling near the area we decided to play it again. We were not disappointed and chose to play it again on our return trip. It is a great course. Oh and
What a gorgeous course!
We got a GREAT rate on Golfnow to play this course. It is one of the prettiest courses we have ever played. You need to make sure to hit it straight on many of the holes, but we would go back and play it again in a heart beat. Managed to land in at least 4 of the 84 bunkers, two of which were in excellent shape, the other two were a bit wet for some reason. The greens were smooth and reasonably fast, with some slight undulations that made them entertaining.
Losing it's past glory
Love this course. Overall conditions of bunkers and fairways were sub par. Greens were fast and tough. Just not as pristine as in years past. Staff at bar were great and food was excellent.
