Tough greens
Still seeing effects of top dressing, but the course can make you pay for mistakes. Thick rough and green features which make it difficult to read.
Nice course, poorly managed.
Play was extremely slow. We mentioned poor place of play and lack of ranger to pro at the turn.
He accused us of whining and was completely non responsive to our concerns. Left a real bad impression.
not Golfnow friendly
Course officials indicated no agreement with Golf Now. Finally let us play-------last time. You need to fix this.
Time to mow
With all the rain the course is rough is thick and balls get lost. There were some very unfair areas where I was penalized for a good shot.. I lost 6 balls even though I knew where they were. I also found 10 balls while looking. I agree with the others about the fairways. They need more work but I understand they are getting better. This is a rugged high dessert course and one of my favorites being in Santa Fe.
Mow the overgrown rough please. The greens were in great shape
Customer Service
while the course was in god condition and tough, the rough was cut a little too high for the average golfer.
My complaint was with the girl who handled check in.
I booked my tee time and paid the Tuesday before. When I got there she said that you had terminated your agreement with them on Thursday and that I would have to pay them , I said no way and told her that was between you and Black Mesa. She was very rude and eventually I just told her that I had paid and for her to take it up with you
Ruined a great round
This cousr is horrible
For several years the websites have been saying that this course is the best in the state of New Mexico. They have reviews on the wall for top 100 courses in the US to play. The city courses in Albuquerque are 10 times better. I will never return to this course again even if it was free to play. I was completely dissapointed. It was a waste of time and money.
Beautiful Vista's
The course is in a beautiful setting. But there were a lot of brown spots on fairways and greens. But I would play again with the Golf Now discount. I would not pay full rack rate. Lots of tall grass next to the fairways, very hard to get out.
Good Course
This is a good course, its probably better in early spring of fall. high desert course
Rugged Beauty
Rugged and shaggy, somewhat by design. Beautiful high desert setting amongst canyons, washes, mesas, and cliffs. Lots of elevation changes, tough to get a flat lie. Conditions were fair at best - clover in fairways, many thin areas, rough too heavy, some bumpy rough greens. You better hit it straight and at the proper angles or else you will find the desert rocks and brush. Layout is a mixed bag - some holes spectacular, others questionable with blind shots or too narrow landing areas. Most greens have tiers and slopes - difficult to hit approach shots close and 3 putts are looming. Many holes can wreck your score. I'm glad I played it but once is enough.
Not worth a hot deal
I was hoping that the course would provide nice vistas and some memorable holes. But the course is in as bad a condition as you could imagine and the course actually obstructed any nice view. I don't necessarily feel ripped off because I got a hot deal, but it's not worth going to. I wouldn't go back at really any price. Also, watch out for mosquitoes.
Enjoyable round
Greatly enjoyed my round at Black Mesa. Friendly and helpful staff, even told me that an afternoon shower was about to hit as I made the turn. Carts have GPS in them, and a yardage book is available.
The area has been in a severe drought so the grass was a little spotty, but it is still a great course with a nice challenge. If the area had water I would assume the course would have a more consistent surface.
Great course, loved my round, and I will be back.
Great layout
Played course several times. This is the first time the greens were not in good condition. Would have been disappointed if I had payed full price. Hope they fix them
Fun, exciting, challenging test of golf!!
Do not let the view from the road or small club house foul you. This course is amazing. Lots of challenging tee shots with options, you can pull out the big dog and go for some of the shorter par 4's or lay back with a hydrid or long iron. You can play this course multiple different ways. To get the best views and have some massive elevation changes tee it up from the blacks. My son who is 14 tee it up from the blues and had a blast, but he still had to hit a few drives from the scenic black tees just to see the ball fly off the top of a cliff and land way down in the valley! Lots of animals to see from ground squirrel, jack rabbit, coyote, rattlesnake skin did not see a live one, quail, hawks, etc. The greens were in good shape but a few did have some rough spots if you hit it on the opposite side of the green away from the hole location. The greens do have some slope to them so you might have to aim your put the opposite way, lol. It's fun to use the slopes and undulations to feed the ball back to the hole. I even bounced one off the side of the cliff and managed to end up on the green. Fun trip with my son and family and with the recent rains the course is looking good for the high desert mountain course. Have a blast!! We will be back for sure.
Do not believe the hype
Drove about 7 hours from Denver to play this course due to all the accolades it received, unfortunately 2008 was a long time ago. The days of top 100 courses you can play in the country is long gone for this course. Weeds and wild flowers on every tee box, fairways so brown you cant tell where the fairway even is, and greens so bad it was like playing a game of plinko from Price is Right. It looked like they fired their entire grounds crew. If this course is open a year from now I would be shocked. This once was an $80 course that is now a $20 course (Literally how much they charged us) also played Angel Fire and Towa while we were there which blew this course away I would highly recommend taking your business elsewhere.
Black Mesa
Fabulous real estate.... Very clear that they re in need of water. Black Mesa is a 5 star property in need of water. Nonetheless, Black Mesa is a truly
Inspired piece of real estate. Once they get through
their drought problems, Black Mesa is a truly
inspired course! Cannot wait to play it again as
water conditions improve!
Visually breathtaking
Having played this course before I found the greens to be a 4 on a 10 scale. Everything else was superb.
Great layout
Awesome course. Challenging layout, especially with some winds. Few fairways and greens were patchy. But overall great course for the money.
Beautiful layout, poor condition
The course winds through desert canyons creating some interesting views.
Unfortunatley, the fairways had some major issues with spotty dead grass. They also looked somewhat dry.
The greens also had some dead areas and were generally bumpy.
One green was very wet as the sprinklers were turned on just after our approach shots were made. Middle of the day sprinkler test? Saved me from another 3 putt.
Hadn't played the course in years so I don't know if the fairway conditions are unique to this golf season. Looks like a grub infestation. Hopefully it can recover soon.
BlackMesa, visually beautiful, but needs someTLC
I rated this average, only because of condition. Otherwise it could be excellent. Black Mesa is just off the highway near Espanola. It's a New Mexico desert type course. I played in early June, so it was hot but not humid. It's a challenging course with lots of changes in elevation and some blind shots. Not a lot of water. No surprise there. As others have said, the fairways and greens have many bare spots. The cart paths are dirt and in some cases, if you don't know the course, you need to think about where your going. There were also some very steep ups and downs on the cart path. Not much signage to point the way. That being said, the scenery was stunning, especially on the back nine, and the greens, aside from bare spots, were pretty good. It's the kind of course, if your visiting, you have to play at least once. A pro at another course said management had just changed hands, so maybe the condition will improve over time.
