Hunting Hawk Golf Club
About
Situated along the Chickahominy River, Hunting Hawk Golf Club sprawls across a rolling landscape covered with mature trees and dotted with sparkling ponds. The natural wetlands and rugged terrain were carefully preserved. The gentle hills provide contours that are subtle but challenging. The fairways have generous, well-defined landing areas but they are flanked with sand bunkers and sculpted mounding. The undulating greens are also framed with bunkers and grass hollows. Every hole has a unique character that requires a different strategy. Hunting Hawk Golf Club's back nine is slightly tougher than the front nine. It is where most of the water comes into play. The 11th is the best birdie opportunity on the back, it is followed by the challenging 12th, which required a carry over wetlands that many balls have fallen prey to.

Golfnow pricing made this a great value
People need to repair their darn ball marks! I am continually amazed that people don't take care of the course. Especially the greens and fairways.
Pace of play was awful and staff did not attend to it.
So disappointed due to pace of play -ended up just walking off the golf course. Complained to mgmt/staff and got little reaction. Won't be returning.
Great conditions!
Golf course was in great shape with the greens rolling true. Roughs were thick but fair so need to stay in the "short stuff." Will play again.
Good Layout - takes too long to play
overall a very good layout and generally in good, not excellent, condition. Greens were a little slow but with the summer heat I can understand that. The fairways had a lot of bare spots, Im, assuming caused by winter kill and or the over seeding of rye grass this past winter .
Usually this course takes about 4.5 hours to play, but sometimes 5 hours like this last time. 5 hour golf round is no fun and there is no reason for 5 hours. it doesn't matter if you are a good or bad golfer, playing ready golf, parking your cart ahead of you not behind you ( you are on the green and the cart is back in the fairway not by the green or near the next tee) are common problems I see. I can play 18 holes with a cart in 2.5 hours if no one is in front of me - how the heck it takes 5 hours is unacceptable !!!!
Decent course, terrible shape.
Hunting Hawk is currently in HORRENDOUS shape. We've had lots of rain this spring and summer--and in the few days leading up to my round-- so mud and damp spots were to be expected. I did not expect to see huge, muddy, brown, bare spots in pretty much every fairway. Awful. The greens are in pretty rough shape as well, but that doesn't appear to be a maintenance issue. Instead, I don't think anyone who plays Hunting Hawk knows how to fix a ball mark. There were massive ball marks all over every green. Some of them were just left unfixed (and some appeared to be only an hour or two old) and some of them appeared to have been "repaired" by people who had no idea what they were doing.
Hunting Hawk is generally a decent course, and the staff was friendly enough. But, with it's bad condition, it's a terrible value for the money right now. Maybe worth half of what's being charged.
Oh, and $7 for a small basket of range balls is ridiculous.
No drink cart even when we called to ask for it!
At sign in the attendant mentioned it would be in the 90's that day, so it's really good they have a drink cart...
By the 6th hole we started calling the front desk to have the girl drive around the drink cart and they said they'd send her around...
In 4.5 hours of playing 18 holes we didn't see the drink cart once!
If we didn't stop play and head to the club house we would have had to quit playing regardless of the money spent to play a round of golf.
Slow and terrible condition
The fairways were in absolutely awful condition to the point that it would have been impossible to play the ball down. Also, the round lasted over 5 hours. Will never play here again.
A Course Of Many Faces
Hunting Hawk is a course that can't seem to make up its mind as to what it wants to be: an pristine premier course or a shabby municipal course; an straightforward easy course, or a peculiarly challenging course.
The greens here are as fast as you'll find anywhere, are smooth with subtle undulations, but the pins I saw weren't in particularly tough positions. The fairways are sufficiently wide with visible landing zones on nearly all of them, yet there were some bare spots that needed attention. The rough is neither long nor particularly thick, but stray from the fairway and you'll be lucky to get your ball back. Water and high grass/brush are positioned in areas you are sure to find. The bunkers were in great shape, despite all the recent rain.
The staff is very friendly, I even saw the beer cart girl 6 times in 4 hours.
A good GolfNow deal will make your round here all the more enjoyable. If fast greens and ever changing difficulty are your thing, this is your course.
This is a great layed out course with many great features.
The course itself was in decent shape the greens were well maintained. The tee box were freshly cut but the fairway had some wet spots that are having trouble filling in and draining due to the soggy weather of late. However any day at the course beats any day at the office.
Wet but Excellent
Although the area has had in excess of 4 inches of rain in the past several days, the course had very few spots where there were soggy lies. The condition of the course, considering mother natures havoc over the past few days was excellent, and far better than I had expected.
The greens were quick, the tee boxes well manicured, and the fairways just as green and lush as you would come to expect from this time of the year.
Although not the most challenging course, Hunting Hawk has the ability to make you suffer if you are not on your game, with water, hazards, and penalizing dog legs around every corner.
Great course, great facility for practice, and one of my local favorites for sure!
A great find.
I play private and public courses. HHawk is one of the nicest all around public courses I have played in the area: including Royal New Kent; Sycamore creek; Kiskiack; stone house and Kingsmill. It's remote but not like a farm track. Just a beautiful course.
A fair but challenging course!
Greens and fairways are very well maintained but some of the tee boxes were a little sketchy. A couple long par 4s are challenging. A few short par 5s give the average Joe the chance at eagle! Thoroughly enjoyed my round here!
Good layout, Poor Rough
The course conditions sported dry, fast fairways that provided plenty of roll on drives but because of the hard pack it was difficult to get down on shots and use the bounce on short irons. The greens were in great condition and provide true, fast rolls on putts. The Rye grass in the rough was left to grow at least four feet along fairways and at least 2-3 feet around the bunkers. If the goal was to make the course an unforgiving, PGA level track then they succeeded. My only concern was that golfers are not provied an opportunity to recover from errant drives or approach shots, ultimately slowing play as groups ahead searched for lost balls.
Hit straight from the tee or go hicking in the forest!
Brilliant course with great holes winding its way through the hillside with forest to the left, right and everywhere you look. Every hole a picture hole - but a little bit of local knowledge needed on some of the tee boxes, where you can be hitting over a hill to a dog leg. Course guide a must to refer to - make sure you get one before you start.
Greens were fast and undulating - not easy to read at times - but that is probably more my lack of talent at putting!
Very slow round, probably due to holiday weekend with lots of people out playing, but there seemed to be no monitoring of the extreme slow play of some groups who unfortunately didn't seem to acknowledge that there were others on the course.
A pity - as it is a brilliant course - will try to play this on a less busy day I think - but definitely do it again.
I love "The Hawk"
Hunting Hawk is one of my favorite courses and it didn't disappoint on my latest outing. Played on a Wednesday afternoon and we were the first group to tee off after a tournament. Finished in 3hrs. The course was in great shape. My only problem with HH is the Canadian Geese. They made it tough to putt on a few holes. I wish they had a trained dog to run them off on the holes with water.
One of Richmond's top courses
Hunting Hawk is a great challenging course if you want to play from the tips, or a fun moderate course from the whites (grey hawk). The fairways are forgiving and the greens are challenging (without being ridiculous) but very playable. Every time I've played the 1st cut around the fairways is pretty deep compared to other courses, but not "un-maintained"
Good food too.
This course is well maintained and very challenging.
Course was not as wet as was instructed before play. Carts had to remain on paths for entire round which begun at 2:09. This made for slow play and we never saw a ranger to express our concerns. Fairways were in excellent shape for an A.M. and P.M. tournament. Greens were top notch. We will return soon.
Nice Track!
Found this course on Golf Now and read the reviews, decided to give it a try. I was very glad I did! It is in very good shape for this time of year. Course is tough though, slope rating from the black tees is 139! You must be a shot maker, fades, draws, low shots into the wind, etc. Some elevation changes but they are suttle, you have to see them and figure that into your yardage or you will come up short. Greens were quite undulated and pretty fast as compared to others I've played in the area. I will definitely play here again this year, I really enjoyed it.
Definitely worth the price
This course was in great shape for the time of year (early). Fun to play with many risk reward options. Would definitely replay when in the area next. Very good value for the money.
The course was in good shape for this time of the year.
It was nice to hit shots from a fairway with grass and the greens were in the good condition.
