Overpriced, Terrible bunkers

This course has gone downhill over the last couple of years. It has become very overpriced, and they have the worst green side bunkers around. They hard baked with clumps if mud. The greens and fairways are just they are just OK

Great Layout

In fairness....this is where I play a lot of golf. So I may be biased. First the opportunities for improvement. While getting better, there is still some apathy and indifference within the bar, restaurant area with a couple employees who have been there forever. Also, at peak rate, this is a high price point at times and there is a lot of competition in the immediate area for your golf dollars. I’m amazed how much great golf there is in the this part of the south metro. Now the good ....fantastic layout which if located in a rural setting would garner better reviews. This course does wind around some neighborhoods which can at times detract from the true architecture of Tom Weiskopf’s only Minnesota designed layout. The greens are very good and undulating and offer great players plenty of challenge. Many, many bunkers which have been improved of late with conditioning. The fairways are very ample and offer less skilled players a chance to get the ball in play. The course is very fun to play and never gets fatiguing due to large greens and different tee boxes. The bent grass fairways are as good as anywhere as long as divots are replaced. The staff in the pro shop is fantastic and very accommodating. Twilight rates and weekend afternoons offer a great price point. This is a really fun course to play.

Solid Track Although Pricey

Have always liked this track for it's fast and true greens. Layout is very good although some holes will leave you wondering what they were thinking in the design phase. Of course I have rarely seen any course without a couple or few questionable holes. Overall very scenic and well laid out but take a cart as this course is walkable but really more designed for carting.

Time for some customer service training

Loved the course. My problem was with the staff. They were rude, didn't really understand golf, made mistakes checking us out, sent the ranger out to tell us to pick up the pace when the closest foursome to us was two holes back. I personally hate playing behind slow players but correct me if I'm wrong, pace of play is only an issue if you are making someone wait. The restaurant service was no better. They had one lady handling the entire room and she could not keep up and messed up several of the bills. One bill for two drinks and a burger came in at $200. How do you miss that? I think the staff needs some serious customer service training. As much as I enjoyed playing the course, I would never go back. Many other equally good options out there.

It's pretty and exhilarating, but like a pretty girl- hard to understand and infuriating

This course is incredibly hard. There's no way to say it more simply. It can border on unfair, when you're seeing straight tee shots end up at the bottom of a ravine or in a grass bunker- but if you're hitting the greens and they're receptive, it will be a memorable golf round. It's really the most fun i've had struggling to shoot in the 80's as a three handicap.

I don't think you'd want to walk this course. It's long and with the trouble and length between tees it would be arduous. Spend the extra money (it's already a splurge) and cart. There were a lot of golfers out there, and it's a tough slog, so it doesn't have great pace of play, even on a weekday. Prepare to be frustrated, but want to play it again right away. Some of the homes on the course will make you question life decisions.

Challengin Course, Good Value

The Wilds Golf Club is one of the more difficult courses in the Twin Cities metro area. From the back (Black) tees, the course is 7,012 yards long, and plays to a 74.3 rating and 150 slope. That's right- 150! For purposes of comparison the corresponding numbers for the TPC Twin Cities course are 7,164, 75.7, and148. The course scorecard provides recommendations on the appropriate tees for golfers to play based on their handicap and driver distance. I played the forward men's tees (5,978 yards, 69.6, 140) and was glad I didn't play the longer tees. Unlike many newer golf courses that are set among housing developments that were formerly cornfields, The Wilds is built on rolling, treed terrain, with significant elevation changes throughout. The houses are there, but they are sufficiently set back from the course so that going out of bounds into someone's back yard requires a really wicked hook or slice. One negative aspect of the elevation changes on the course is that there are many blind shots from the tee. The golf carts are not equipped with GPS, so if you are not familiar with course, you might have to drive forward to see what you'll be hitting into from the tee. Of course, this will also be required when you are hitting from the fairway up to an elevated green. The rolling terrain means that you won't find many level lies even when you are in the fairway. The greens are large, many of them with at least two distinct levels and lots of undulations. Straight and level putts will be hard to find. On the sixteenth green, one member of our group was putting from the front of the green to the pin which was in the back of the green, at least seventy feet away and on a sort of shelf. The putt went part of the way up to the shelf, to about six feet from the cup, and then rolled back about twenty feet. Opportunities to lose strokes abound on the course. There are forced carries, water, woods, and bunkers. Lots of bunkers, both in the fairway and surrounding the greens. And most of them are deeper than you'll find at most Twin Cities courses. If all this sounds as though I didn't enjoy the round, think again. I really loved the course. It may be challenging, but it's also fun and a beautiful layout. The view from the 14th tee is really special. It takes some effort to take your eyes off the scenery in the distance and focus on where to aim your drive. At the standard rate, The Wilds is one of the pricier courses in the Twin Cities, $77 walking and $93 with a cart. However, they do have special rates after 12 on weekends and for seniors that bring the price down to $60 or $66 riding. At that rate, this course is a real golf value. Try it!

Crown Jewel of Minnesota Daily Fee Golf

Back when upscale daily fee courses were just getting started in the Twin Cities (1995), The Wilds Golf Club was pretty much the only game in town. From those early days, the course has aged well. If you are a fan, at all, of Tom Weiskopf/Jay Morrish designs, you will truly love this course. Over 150 feet in elevation change (most pronounced on numbers 9 and 14) keeps you present, or at least it should. Conditions are always superlative. Make sure to let the ego relax, as well. Choose the wrong tee based upon a swelled chest and be prepared to be taken down a peg or two. Lastly, the staff at The Wilds has always been brilliant, a reflection of the club's PGA Professional and General Manager, Shad Gordon. He's been there from close to day one and the course is his baby.

One of the best in the Cities

I consider this my home course, as I play league here and only live a few minutes away. By far the best manicured greens that I have played since moving to MN a few years ago. The staff is fantastic and always accommodating. The food is better than just regular bar food, and would recommend anyone grabbing a meal here after their round. The layout of the course is top notch, lots of elevation changes, undulating greens, and well kept fairways. Make sure you are on your game, as this course wil penaize you for spraying the driver. The greens will always be fast, and I do mean fast. Make sure you put in som time on the practice green to get a feel for em. The practice facility is nice and large enough to accomodate a bunch of golfers. My only complaint is the sand traps at this course. For how nice the rest of the course is, the sand traps are sub par. They are not fluffy and some of them look like they are never taken care of. Hopefully they will address this issue sometime soon. Though maybe I should just stay out of the bunkers and I would have no issues. Make sure you play this course, as you will not be disappointed.
