Lakeway Yaupon - Hill Country golf on a budget

Recently played the Yaupon course for the first time in several years. It's not a fancy course, but the staff is friendly enough. The driving range isn't much to speak of, but you can get warmed up. Same for the putting green.

The course is quirky, but kind of fun. There are some pretty dramatic elevation changes, including a ridiculously uphill par 5 to kick things off. The layout is unique, but it's not particularly well maintained so it's not as enjoyable as it could be. The 18th is another interesting par 5, with a giant drop off the tee shot, and then a massively uphill 2nd shot to the green.

I wouldn't go out of my way to play this course again, but if you are looking for a laid back round in a scenic environment this may be the place for you. I'd say it's comparable to Lago Vista.

Elevation changes

Nice course, but expected more from a resort/private course.

Played this course with a buddy of mine this past weekend. Lots of elevation changes and blind shots. Definitely helps to have course knowledge.

Couple odd holes but nothing to keep you away.

I used to like this course because it had a few odd holes. I still like it, but kind of shake my head each time I play it. There are a few narrow fairways with houses in play. And you'll have a few blind shots which are always fun the first time you play the course. Overall, the course provides a nice rolling up/down ride.

They start you off on a downhill/uphill curving blind ride where housing is way too close for many approach shots. Nothing like having a little extra potential frustration to start the round. They follow that up with a pond protected green on the 2nd hole; make that tee shot count. And the green on #3 can be quick -- I recommend keeping the ball towards the front lower part of the green -- after you've cleared the protecting pond of course. For #8, just hit a nice shot to the landing area; trying to take it over the trees works about one out of 10 times and just isn't worth it. And finally, #18 is just weird. You can't see where your ball will land. The fairway has a major drop down to a pond and they've put a couple of big 20-30 yards steps for the Jolly Green Giant there to assist with stopping your ball ... sometimes. I've played this course numerous times over the years and still can't figure out what to hit off of this tee box. No matter what, I've always had a long and/or odd stanced second shot over water and into a hill on top of which the green sits. The hole just frustrates everyone and it's very difficult to get par. And no one wants to finish a round on a frustrating hole.
