Fun course
I have been playing JC for over 20 years. The course is in much better shape than previous times. Pace of play was great. Played in just under 4 hours!
Overall excellent value.
Played yesterday. FIrst time in a while since I'd been out at JC. I was very happy with condition of course. Greens were true and didn't have a bad lie all day. Recommend.
Great value golf course
The course was in very good shape, particularly the greens. I have played several other courses in the Austin area recently and was disappointed with their condition. No so with Jimmy Clay. The pace of play was great - finished 18 in less than 3:40 - and one of us walked. Will definitely be going back there soon.
Consistent Track
Dependable old standby always remains true. Suffered a bit behind some beginners with their slow play. Would have been nice to see a marshal offer some council to them but managed to take matters in hand after just a few holes. Still, would have appreciated for course management to have stepped in.
Adding it back into my course rotation
Well, I hadn't been back to JC in a lot of years. It'd seen some tough times along with some severe drought. So a friend and I spent a weekday afternoon to get reacquainted with the course. Luckily we'd had some rain recently which helped soften things up a bit. In fact, it was cart path only on this particular day -- at least until we were about 2/3s finished and the marshal said we could go 90°.
Tee boxes seemed alright -- flat and not overly beaten up by those of you who take divots with your driver. :) And the fairways had a nice cut of grass and appropriate first cuts of rough. Same can be said for the greens as they had a nice cut and were in quite good shape. All in all, I was very pleased with the conditions after remembering my last outing or two on the course many years ago. I'm glad to say that it's come back nicely ... to the point where I can add it into my course rotation as applicable.
You can certainly scramble often on this course. The fairways are sometimes a little wider than average and any trees lining them are sparse. Some courses punish you with the rough but it wasn't bad; it was just where it should've been. These factors can make this course a little easier and/or pleasurable for higher handicappers and/or newer golfers.
One tip for the course. I know you've thought about it. Maybe you're trying to see if it'll come back with enough leaves etc. But the tree in the fairway on #18 needs to go; picture attached. The shot off of the tee box is already challenging. We don't need a 78% dead tree sitting in the way for our approach to the green which is bordered by two (2) ponds. This hole has enough difficulty in general ... we don't need to add the tree into the mix. Please cut it down.
Green’s condition
Greens are in fantastic shape. Recommended playing now before the season ends.
Good layout with slow greens
Greens were grainy and slow, but fair. Everything else was good.
Always Exceeds Expectations
Jimmy Clay is a muni course that is run and groomed like a club. The greens keepers have done a remarkable job throughout the long hot summer. The fairways produce nice, tight lies and the greens roll true.
I lost two balls in the first cut due to longer than normal grass and you had to step on top of your ball to find it. Apparently I wasn't the only one losing balls because I found 8 balls all within 10 feet of the short grass.
That will be corrected with a quick mow. I was there the day after a big rain. The course drains wonderfully with only a handful of muddy spots.
2nd visit even better
The course was so nice came back after a few days and played again. Pace of play was again under 4 hours and that was after rain making it cart path only. Greens were in very good shape and most of the traps seemed fine. One was with water but it could be expected. Again inside staff very helpful and the practice range was in good shape. We will certainly be back
Great 1st visit
Visiting Austin and closest course was here. Driving range and practice green in good shape. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Really felt at home. Course was challenging but not frustrating. Greens were in good shape and a little tricky. Misread a few. Played the 18 holes in 3 42. Groups all moved well. Hope the rain stops so we can get another round in there. Thanks for a great day
In Great Shape
Hats off to the superintendent and the staff that maintain Jimmy Clay. The fairways were plush and the greens were good. Considering the heat and lack of rain, they have kept all the grass healthy. I did not see any fungus patches on the greens. They were a little fuzzy when I played but rolled true.
Great course, easy and fun, well kept. However, unsure if it's because of the time our tee time (6pm) was at, but paid for the full 18 and only was allowed to play back 9. I feel like it should be half the rate we paid for if we're only allowed to play the back 9 imo.
Good Value
Good value. If you're a serious player this course may not be challenging enough for you but for me, an every once in awhile player that has enough problems on my own, I appreciated the mostly forgiving design of this course. Everything was in good shape. Greens were well maintained especially for being in the middle of a historic drought. Not super fast but definitely faster than other Austin courses at this price point. A handful of moderately tight fairways but also a handful of very generous fairways. Staff was very friendly, they got us out right on time, and play moved along pretty smoothly especially for a Friday afternoon.
Cart Path Only Signs
I don’t know why it is cart path only on holes 3 and 8. Those signs have been up for at least 25 years and I don’t see the purpose. The fairways are just like the fairways on all the other holes.
Maybe there was a reason in the day they went. Someone forgot to take them down when the reason was no longer valid. And they became permanent fixtures.
