Great Layout
Very fun but challenging course. Not long but really have to make good shots and have strong course management. Beautiful views and very well maintained. Front nine went fast then got stuck behind a five-some on the back that didn't bother to let us play through. But being a nonmember at a private course can't complain too much!
Good Challenge
Take time to review course notes. Some holes tricky.Greens were excellent
Amazing views
This course rocks!!! This is a must play course. This course is not about how far u drive the ball. It's about mid distance and right placement.
If ur able to get a good deal on this course. U r crazy not to take it and play it.
Nice course
Although the course wasn't in the best shape, it was still an enjoyable round.
Okay course, nothing special. Expected more
Condition is acceptable - it's not bad for a 30 dollar course, but at double or more that price it is not up to par. It's not in bad shape, but its also not pristine. The course has a nice setting, but the design is pretty boring considering where the property is (scenic and hilly). You'd be hard pressed to carve a more sedentary course out of the property. I would agree with other reviewers, you'll need course knowledge to play this course well - but it is not a long or difficult course. I didn't have more than an 8 iron in to any hole (played from the back tees). And had less than 250 in on every par 5. And that's with most holes having wind that was not helping. Most of my approach shots where wedges, and I only drive the ball 260-70. It's a shame they don't have another set of tees further back, or more protection around the green. It's not a bad course, but I understand it is private, and at 59 dollars twilight I expect much better greens, and a more challenging, interesting design. Yes the views are spectacular, and the setting is excellent, but that doesn't mean the course is well designed - it simply isn't. I've played across Europe, Florida, and Texas - I probably won't be back to River Place, despite living exceptionally close. I will say the staff was helpful, and the clubhouse is nice. Although I did not enter a bunker, my playing partner did and the sand in the was exceptionally consistent and there was plenty of it. However, the bunkers are quite shallow and mostly benign. Few, if any, offer challenge. I view this course as good for the retired, or for those who haven't played any/many well manicured or decent courses.
Scenic, Challenging and Great Experience
This course was breathtaking. Definitely broke all stereotypes I had of Texas Golf. when the reviews, staff and members all recommend to bring extra golf balls take heed. This course was challenging . Not long but there is trouble everywhere and on nearly every hole. Do not let this scare novice or intermediate players as you would not want to miss the opportunity to play a unique course. I left the driver in the bag most holes. I loved the mental challenge and for first timers they give you a cheat sheet with recommendations of yardage, and placement that helps a bunch as a first timer. I love it so much I wanted to play the next day but could not find a tee time.
Beautiful course
Fantastic Day. Course is in great shape
What a day for golf
January 17th and playing golf......AWESOME. Course was in great shape for this time of the year. Had a great time and enjoyed the attitude of the staff as well. It was a beautiful day, and it didn't hurt that I eagled the part 5, 17th either. Glad we choose to play River Place yesterday.
Fair
Cart broke down. Took entirely too long, to get a replacement. Had to walk 3 holes. Course is not designed for walking. Had to call pro shop 3 times. I will never play there again .
super tough course
Tons of forced carries and very tilted fairways and greens. Very, very difficult target golf. Bring lots of balls and make sure you are accurate. Super tough corse. Pay no attention to the total yardage of whatever tees you play, you are in for quite a challenge. If you want a fun relaxing day, go someplace else. If you want beautiful views and a humbling experience, play this course.
Topsy-Turvey round of golf in the Hill Country
This wasn't my first round at River Place, the rough-and-tumble Hill Country layout northwest of town. But it'd been awhile, so it may as well have been. I found myself in a lot of the wrong spots this round, both off the tee and around the green. The greens were redone in 2014, and they were particularly fast. I wasn't expecting it, and as a result, found myself above the hole three-putting all day long. I saved face on the back nine, but still, was smarting after the round.
Off the tee, it pays to be conservative in most cases, especially if you don't have familiarity with the place. Playing with a member, as I have before, is invaluable.
I still think it's by far one of the most scenic courses in the Hill Country that is at least semi-accessible to the public, even if there are some better layouts that let you hit a few more drivers than out here, which calls for more irons and hybrids off the tee.
One of my all time favorites.
Fun and challenging course. Great views and vistas. Not forgiving, lots of ravines and hillsides. Tricky but fun.
Good layout But ......
We played Monday after the weekend rains so we had to play cart path only. While some holes were wet to the point you needed to stay on cart path, a number of holes were dry to where 90 degree rule would have helped the pace of play.
They said they were trying to put two somes out and let them play through the one foursome group but that did not work. Stuck behind 4 some front 9 and then behind a 5 some back nine. Made for a long round even longer
Course Layout too weird
Overall, the course conditions were good. There had been a lot of rain recently so we were on cart paths only which was very difficult. The greens were very smooth and a good pace. However, we didn't really like the course layout. There seems to be many blind shot, severely elevated greens, very sloped fairways, it was just too weird for what we like. We won't return primarily because of the layout. You can't walk this course.
River Place Golf
Lots of elevation changes and the course plays longer than the yardage. Par 3's on the short side but 4's and 5's are longer. Lots of canyons to hit across on tee shots and approach shots into greens. Greens putted true and fairways and traps in good shape.
Interesting layout
First, I love hill country golf, and this course as that feel. However, even from the tips, it's only 6200 yards. Though it did have some very challenging holes, it seems they ran out of land on a few par 4's. Conditions were average at best; greens were sandy from air ration and the fairways were under maintained. On the plus side, the bunkers are perfect. For the money, yes...if your an avid golfer, id look elsewhere.
Excellent course that plays longer than the score card
From the tip, this course is 6381 yards long, but you will swear it plays like 6800 yards. That's because of many elevation changes and lots of forced carries. You will play a couple of clubs longer than you normally do from the same distance. The course was in great condition and staff was very friendly. They have a FREE driving range across the street which is nice. So an extra point for that. (I think it is a bit crass and tacky when non-muni courses charge for practice balls. Muni's are cheap, and I understand that they have to charge for everything to save tax payers.) You must bring many extra balls. You WILL lose balls here, but then again, you will find many balls, too - unfortunately not yours. Some holes here offer stunning view. This course is a challenging course but it is well worth a visit. Bring lots of balls and humility.
Great Golf Outing
Excellent course, staff was excellent, pace of play was great, food was very good
Beautiful but Very Demanding
Course was in great shape and will take your very best game in order to score. Fairways are narrow/undulating and greens are very fast in the heat of the day. #1, #10, #17 and #18 are worth the price of admission alone. Bring your own food and drink because there will not be any cart girls on "Open to GolfNow" days.
Down voters be hating on the truth. To everyone else, you aren't missing ANYTHING not playing here
