Good alternative to Barton Creek
If you're visiting Austin and want to play golf, you probably want to play at Barton Creek, but it's exclusive (you have to be a resort guest or member) and pricy even if you do have the access. That's why I often recommend River Place, located off Hwy 2222 on the way out to Lake Travis to a lot of golfers instead. While it's technically private, they seem to be offering more and more public tee times, and when they do, they are quite a steal, usually in the $50-60 range. The scenery and drama of the Hill Country is on full display and there are some real eye-popping holes. Like most courses in the Hill Country, there are some squirrelly holes, but the trade-off is wonderful scenery and great hole variety. Much recommended.
Amazing Course
It is an incredible course and a lot of fun to play. The staff is awesome and treated us like we were regular members of the club.
Outstanding course. Smooth greens. Manicured fairways. No weeds in traps. Very scenic. Carts paths are like taking a very hilly nature trail.
Outstanding course. Smooth greens. Manicured fairways. No weeds in traps. Very scenic. Carts paths are like taking a very hilly nature trail. Missed a hole in one on #6 by 14". Shot a 79 from senior tees.
Beautiful course with a lot of great features.
The layout on this course is really nice. There are some great looking holes on this course. There are also a number of holes that are as tough as they are pretty. Conditions were very good at the course. Overall a great choice in the Austin area.
Great Course and friendly staff!
Great Course and friendly staff! Would recommend anyone to go and play!
The course was in good shape.
Good for time of year. Course is truly a hill country course, not very forgiving.
Fun yet challenging
The views at this course are amazing. However it is a course that requires you to be precise with your drives and approach shots. It is challenging but fun at the same time which is a credit to the course. The conditions for mid January were incredible. I can't wait to visit the course again in the spring time to see it in all it's glory.
One of my favorites...
The course was in okay shape. However, even in okay shape, the course is still one of my favorites. Absolutely gorgeous terrain and one of the most difficult courses I've played. I highly recommend playing it if you haven't.
The greens are super fast
Great food and beer specials on Sunday. The burger is on my top 5 list. Staff is friendly and the course is nice and challenging.
WOW, IS ALL I CAN SAY
As with any course it is a good idea to do your research and see what everyone else is saying about it. If you have a slice of any kind in your swing then you may not want to play this course, I lost 4 balls in the first 4 holes of play. Every hole( s couple of exceptions) slopes from left to right and downhill. The front nine you play for the lay up because there are some hidden dangers in play out there. The back nine is just as hard with the start of the 10th hole which slopes from left to right and downhill and stays that way through the round.
The greens are in excellent condition for this time of year and break more that you might think. The speed of the greens are about a medium pace. The practice greens are a pretty good judge as to what the green speeds are for that day.
The views that you get on some of the tee boxes are just breath taking and that is why I would play here again.
Great views and fun to play.
The course looked diffcult so I thought it would be a long round, but it actually played very fairly and we made it around in 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon. I would definitely play it again.
Excellent challenging course
This is the best course available on golfnow in Austin. It doesn't play very long (from the golds), but there are a lot of elevation changes and unplayable OB areas to get over. You will lose balls if you're inconsistent. The greens were fast, but they didn't have a lot of break.
very difficult and very pretty
Probably the hardest course I've ever played and maybe the most picturesque too. It's a country club that sells some tee times to nonmembers and well worth the $70 I paid. The course runs through a valley with tons of elevation changes and island greens. Many tight lies. Bring about 10 extra balls for the front nine alone.
Beautiful tough course
The course was in great shape. I haven't played here in quite a while. One tough course. Bring your A game. Staff was very friendly and treated me like I was a Member. Lots of beautiful tough holes with hill country views. I can't wait to play here again.
Challenging course in a beautiful setting
The most challenging course I've played in the Austin area. Forced carries off the tee and/or before the greens on most holes. Several fairways with significant slope. Fairways were in good shape and greens were excellent.
Very Challenging
great golf course - a little intimidating - ok a lot..... a bit pricey but we got a good deal at golf now....
Beautiful, but difficult!
Excellent course - love the up and down elevations. Greens and fairways are all in excellent shape. High handicappers beware! Bring extra balls! In spite of that, I always try to play here when Golfnow has a deal on the fees. This was an EXCELLENT deal!
The views on the course are worth the green's fee.
I lived in Austin for 14 years and played this course every time I got a chance. Every time I return, I'll play River Place over all others. The staff is great! The course is always in tip-top shape. And bring your camera for the views on hole after hole!
Spectacular. V v challenging. Tough. Worth playing once !!
Tougher than slope indicates. All unique holes. Extremely hilly terrain. Absolutely gorgeous.
Great views and challenging play
The course is located in the hill country of central Texas which makes for great elevation changes.
